2017 NFL Draft Thread
QUOTE (shipps @ May 1, 2017 -> 04:00 PM) He really lit up talking about Cohen, compared him to Sproles (no surprise). Envision using him as a dynamic 3rd down back putting him in space to do his thing. I am still confused to how they handled bringing in Glennon. When they brought him in it doesn't seem like they envisioned taking a QB in the draft. Yet, when the draft came around they were willing to bend over backwards to get one no matter what it took. When did they realize that they would have a shot a one? Why did it take them so long to think they had a shot at him? From the start they should have known it was a possibility that they could get Trubisky and by the time they signed Glennon that should have already came to a conclusion on what QB they would want in the draft. Maybe in the scouting and combine process they saw something they couldn't live without.

2017 NFL Draft Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ May 1, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) Do you think a team would admit to inquiring about moving up if asked by a reporter after the fact? Some probably would, some probably wouldn't, IMO This. Absolutely 100% true. The one thing in the back of my head is the Bears being at #3 had to have heard from almost all of the same teams at 3, as SF did at 2. Maybe it was those calls that convinced the Bears that someone really wanted the QB. I can't imagine they would just make it up out of no where.

2017 NFL Draft Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 1, 2017 -> 12:09 PM) I tend to believe there were other teams interested. The Bears had to be fielding calls about their pick. I would have to imagine that the Bears would have heard from the same teams calling about #3 as the 49ers heard about for #2.

Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) So what about the other 79% that aren't on governmental incomes of one sort or another but still saw 95% of the wealth gains of the past decade go to the top 1%? Maybe there's something wrong with the structure of our economy itself and not just 'government handouts' that has driven more and more wealth to the very top of the pile over the past several decades? The argument seems sort of circular, anyway. People aren't on governmental assistance because they want to be, they're on it because there just aren't enough living wage jobs available, or health care has become too expensive for many people to be able to afford without assistance. The gains flowing to the very top have climbed much quicker as a percentage than government spending as a fraction of GDP, so that just doesn't really seem like a correlation let alone a causal effect. edit: I mean, there are other countries with higher government spending per GDP, much more generous social safety net programs, and much higher economic mobility and lower economic disparity. If "government spending per GDP" is a major causal factor in more and more wealth going towards the 1% in the US, why doesn't it hold true elsewhere? It is creating a permanent underclass that is utterly dependent on the government for just about everything. Our economy is trending more towards a Saudi Arabian look versus the Scandinavian one where a ton of people don't work, and really have no need to do so because the marginal gains aren't worth the different in income, or even the loss of benefits.

Tim Anderson's Defense
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:55 AM) What was the consensus on Ray Durham's defense at 2B when he was with the Sox? I was a little too young to really remember. He was traded before Soxtalk really got going.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:26 AM) How much do announcers really effect one's level of interest in the game they are watching? I realize that the older I've gotten, I really don't care who is in the booth. When I watch games, I'm normally multi-tasking, potentially out where the game may be on without volume, or just watching and appreciating the game. Interest? Usually not. But I do notice a good team will add to the broadcast. I often catch myself listening to Pat Foley and Eddie O more than I am paying attention to the moment in a game when they get onto a good topic.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:26 AM) I will give Benetti credit for Sox Math (even though that could be refined as well...but that's a story for a different time). At least that brings viewers in. I just cannot stand the same corny jokes he makes and Q&A sessions with Stone every night. I'd much rather listen to Hawk's rants and stories from 1970 over and over than what Benetti brings to the table consistently. Did you know Steve Stone is cheap?

Tim Anderson's Defense
QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:22 AM) Some people here would've despised Jose Valentin when he was around. Many did. He was pretty polarizing when he was here because of his defense.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:11 AM) The people who hate on Benetti would hate on his replacement...and then his replacement...and then his replacement and so on. There are plenty of guys out there would could bring some personality to the booth. Chicago has a long history of it, continuing to this day. It isn't that he is even bad, he is just boring. People talk about Hawk wanting to be there, but for a guy who keeps getting articles published about how excited he is to this, I never actually get that vibe from him.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:07 AM) Two things: 1) He's significantly better than Hawk, which is already a step up 2) Benetti is new in his role with plenty of room for improvement, a luxury Hawk does not have (he's been trending downwards for about 15 years) If you're going to compare Benetti and Hawk, the only reasonable conclusion is that JB is a better broadcaster in every measurable way AND has room for significant improvement. I have yet to really notice Benetti in a broadcast. That really is about all I have on him. He is the prototypical 21st century announcer. Some people like that, it bores the crap out of me. The split in time between the two just reminds how little personality is in the booth now.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:03 AM) this is basically the defense of Hawk you and DA are going with? That because he's old and cranky he gets to do what he wants? This is a multi billion dollar business FFS not a church bake sale. As has been noted, there's plenty of way to get involved that don't require calling the game (or eyesight for that matter). I mean you can try to recognize what is going on, or you can just be angry about it.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 1, 2017 -> 10:58 AM) He's not a family member that is going to the old folks home and misses his "freedom". He's a professional doing a job in this case. There's literally 100 different ways or more he could be involved with the Sox and MLB that don't involve calling games. I'm no huge Jason fan but he's getting a raw deal here. Make something your life for 60 years and then get back to me when you lose it.

Police keep killing black people
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 1, 2017 -> 10:19 AM) Anyone check out NatGeo's special last night about the '92 LA riots? I heard some good things and DVR'd it. Hope to watch tonight. There are about 4 different versions out there of this. I watched the ABC (Let it fall) one last night and another one on History (can't remember the name). I have two different Nat Geo ones on my DVR to watch next. Super interesting stuff in the first two. Looking forward to the next two.

Hawk Sounds Melancholy
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:07 AM) Personally, it wasn't a complaint, it was an observation that makes me wonder if it's on purpose or if he is losing some of his energy. I am guessing it is a combination of everything. The guy is getting pretty old now. He will be 76 years old this year. The guy has spent about 6 solid decades traveling 6 months out of every year. Throw on top of that the untold hours he has spent driving back to Granger Indiana after homes games until last season. He has had eye problems for decades and has had many procedures and surgeries done on them. It is obvious he isn't seeing the game very well at all anymore, and I think that is a large part of the transition he has made from play by play guy to catch phrase guy to cover up for the lack of ability to follow a game closely these days. I also wouldn't be surprised to know that will all of that going on, the rebuild might not fit into the guys timeline for being around to see the end result, and he is quite honestly depressed. Can you imagine putting 60ish years into pro-baseball and then seeing the end in sight? We deal with much smaller changes in our lives getting us down. I can't imagine this. Baseball is the guys life, no matter what he says about family.

Eaton tears ACL, Out for Year
QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 10:17 AM) Also has a torn meniscus and high ankle sprain. 6-9 month recovery after surgery, which hasn't been scheduled yet. That is a whole of stability in the guys knee that is getting repaired. I really hope for Eaton's sake he can get past the mental aspects of this.

2017 NFL Draft Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:13 AM) You know, all that says to me is the majority of the beating the Bears are taking is over signing Glennon. I hate Glennon because I think he'll just be Ryan Mallet or Matt Flynn pt infinity, but part of this is the NFL constantly being shocked at what quarterbacks make. I have no problems with the Bears having a veteran QB starting while a very raw rookie sits the bench as long as needed/possible. The money really doesn't matter, as they are so far under the cap, who cares. The Bears had just really hope that the kid is worth the extra draft picks they gave up to get him. They are so thin everywhere on this team that by losing in free agency and then giving away so many picks, and making almost all of their picks extremely raw, they are pushing this rebuild back a season or two, IF this talent comes through.

4/30 Games
QUOTE (Jack Parkman @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 11:37 AM) John Manuel from BA on H&R today basically said that none of the pitchers the Sox acquired this offseason are starters and none of the top guys are starters other than Spencer Adams, who is a fringe back of rotation guy. He tried to say it in the nicest way possible. Said command/durability/stuff are the reasons. Not what I wanted to hear. If the Sox truly blew this off season, this franchise is f***ed for a long, long time.

2017 MLB DRAFT
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 06:36 PM) Apparently Nick Hostetler followed some White Sox picks on twitter pre-draft last year including Collins and Burdi. Financial News
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:01 AM) Organized labor also fell steadily. So did manufacturing jobs. Productivity gains and wage increases became decoupled. The economy became increasingly financialized. The salaries between upper level executives and the rest of the workforce diverged quicker and quicker. And actually, the federal budget as a share of national GDP has been more or less steady with some up and down modulation for the past several decades: https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/FYONGDA188S When the bottom 20% of the country is on governmental incomes of one sort or another, they aren't going to build wealth. As that percentage pushes higher and higher, the percentage going to the bottom of the country is going to be less and less.

Tim Anderson's Defense
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 30, 2017 -> 03:03 PM) We know he is capable of being good, he has just gotten back to some bad habits, one handed plays, throwing off one foot when it isn't necessary...he will put in the time to correct it. This is what young players, u less they are superstars do. Eventually, they all struggle, and his defense was so much better than advertised, he may have either slacked a bit with it, or wanted everything to always look spectacular He has been overall awful defensively, but has made many spectacular plays. IMO, he just needs to get back to basics, and not try to do too much. Make simple plays look simple. He is a guy who severely lacks reps. The perfect example is that Gordon Beckham had more PAs his Junior year of college than Anderson did in all of his college career. On top of that he didn't play baseball until his junior year of high school.

Eaton to Nats/Giolito, Lopez, Dunning to Sox
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 29, 2017 -> 07:16 PM) And that's why players accept these team friendly deals. yeah, good call.
