Sox want to finish Q deal by ST
QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 10:31 AM) Makes sense given the rebuild as well. The earlier you make the trade, the quicker the headliners are up. Basically, each trade this year has brought back headliners who probably will not be on the Sox Opening Day roster in '17. If you assume that will be the norm at the trade deadline, and next offseason, then you really need to move Q before Spring Training because you are effectively losing time on the rebuild by waiting. Not to mention that public opinion isn't going to stay with this very long.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 10:12 AM) The only thing that stands out recently about Hawk is his embarrassing moments. Like running downstairs to check on Frazier in the middle of an inning, calling out conspiracies against the sox, TWTW. He is past the time to put him out to pasture, unfortunately it seems he will get his wish of dying in the booth (which will be absolutely horrifying if/when it happens). Now I won't remember him for when he was awesome but rather as a forgetful, domineering, overly opinionated and behind the times announcer that never could let anyone else stand in his light. There is no doubt his best days are behind him. I have said for a couple of years now you can tell his eyes have gotten bad. There are definitely times up there he is guessing at what is going on. But I will say I am going to miss that level of excitement in a baseball broadcast. I am going to also miss that level of fandom. I love it in Pat and Eddie on Hawks games as well. They know they are damned lucky to be getting paid a ton of money to do one of the greatest jobs on the planet, and they live the broadcast like it. Hawk is the same way, but an even bigger fan.

Sickels talks Sox MiLB
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 10:04 AM) Yup, pretty nuts IMO. I'm a huge fan of both Stephens & Call. Also, no way in hell Michalczewski doesn't make the top 20. His prospect status has definitely soured, but he's still a more interesting prospect than several guys on his list. The ONE thing that Covey and Ynoa both have is that they are already here. Ynoa was already on the roster, and there is a pretty high chance that Covey breaks camp in the starting rotation. If you weight towards the chance at being a big leaguer, it makes these rankings make some sense.

Sox want to finish Q deal by ST
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 09:50 AM) Interesting thoughts from Buster Olney on ESPN today. It's Insider so need a subscription but here's the Quintana portion: http://www.espn.com/blog/buster-olney/insider/post?id=15688 The Chicago White Sox could wait until after the start of spring training or even into next season to trade Jose Quintana, the best available starting pitcher. But evaluators with knowledge of the Quintana discussions say the White Sox seem intent on finishing a deal before camps open. The Pittsburgh Pirates could be the frontrunners for the left-hander, whose modest salary through the 2020 season make him perfect for Pittsburgh's budget. Interesting to see that in print. I was guessing that was the truth, but again when you get so far down the road, it is almost more difficult to bring him back.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 10:03 AM) Well, to be fair, what big moment did he have to work with? Apparently we went an entire season without a walk off win? Without a controversial call? The fact that nothing stands out is kind of the point.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) There are no opinions I can relate to less than people's bizarre fixations on announcing. Vin Scully reincarnate could appear today as a new sox announcer and half the people would say he sucks. It's the hitting coach of baseball team media jobs. As many people as hate hearing about the history of this game during a broadcast, they would definitely hate Scully.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 09:04 AM) You make such a salient point here. No doubt I'd rather waste calories trying to figure out "Sox Math" and get all giggly about what gifts are to be had on the table behind Benetti and Stone than listen to a guy who's actually played the game and can and still does lend insights that just about every professional cookie-cutter announcer cannot do. And some excitement. If there is one guy in the White Sox organization that is excited to show up at his job every single day, it is Harrelson. I have never gotten that vibe from Stone, and I don't get it from Benetti. Happy to be there? Sure? Hawk is as giddy as a school girl on show and tell day.

Uh-oh...Harrelson wants to hold on until 2020
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 4, 2017 -> 06:58 AM) Taste in announcers clearly varies from person to person, but I'm with you: I'll take Hawk and his unique style, even now in the twilight of his career, over the cookie cutter stylings of the so-called "professional" announcers. I agree with this. I just spent an entire season (well I guess half of it was Benetti's, the other half Hawks) and I just realized that there is no one distinct moment I can remember from him. I mean I can remember general ideas like his goofy sense of humor or his jokes that Stone is cheap, but there was no one signature moment that I can remember at this time. Sure Hawk goes off of the rails, but you can always count on him for a signature call at a big moment. That is what is missing with Benetti. He's a funny and quirky guy, and he knows his stuff, but I don't get any of that extra from him. He could literally do anything, and be the background to everything, but never really stand out.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 08:13 PM) Gotta wonder how serious the Braves are. I would love to know what kind of offer they made.

Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 04:28 PM) Agreed. Would I like a top 100 prospect for Melky? Of course. But I think the guy(s) we get will likely be 25/26 year old pitcher(s) with control problems in the minors that they hope can figure it out in the pen. This sounds reasonable.

Wacky idea: Trade Rodon, keep Quintana
Would Rodon really be worth that much more?

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 01:08 PM) I don't want to be too pessimistic as any rumor is welcome but I don't trust that Phil Rogers in a series of tweets that starts with "Idle Thought" necessarily means that he has heard sox want meadows vs. him actually saying "sox WOULD want Meadows". Not saying he would be wrong in assessment but from way he usually tweets I just am skeptical he is actually sourced on that info. It is literally the only thing in those tweets that isn't a question of some kind. It could be that he left out the "would" part, all though that would be depressing. The other side is that the Sox wanting Meadows makes sense, otherwise I think the deal would be done already.

Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:53 PM) Melky and say $5 million for a guy like Jeimer Candelario who is blocked for the foreseeable future. Obviously the Cubs wouldn't be interested but maybe they could find a different team to work with. Who wants him, is willing to pay him even $10 million, and is also willing to give up something to get him?

Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
QUOTE (Con te Giolito @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:41 PM) Well you get an .800 OPS switch hitter who may not be a good LFer but is hardly the worst LFer in the biz. And its one year of $15m, not 3 years of $45m. If you got a team that's really going for it that's a guy you could use. Gets on base, has some power, can play the OF...he's a step above the power bats with low OBP's and no position. They aren't getting a T100 prospect for him. Either a couple T250 guys in the low minors or an org guy blocked for the forseeable future. Those aren't bad returns...adding a new name to the Sox T30 isn't a waste of time. Which team has a need and $15 million they are willing to spend?

2016-2017 NBA Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:08 PM) That was after Rondo said the same thing. They aren't athletic and they can't shoot 3's. How can that win? They are about to enter a stretch where they play good teams. It will be interesting to see what happens. If they can stay around .500, I would think nothing changes. If they tank, it would force them to do something. Right now that something seems to be releasing Rondo, which would be lame if that was the only response. The odd thing about them is that they have beaten some really good teams, so there is SOMETHING there. To me it feels like the Coach isn't getting through to the team because they seem to play hard when they feel like it.

Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
QUOTE (beautox @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) All of Melky's value is tied right into contract, if the sox ate all 15m of it then sure i could see them getting a back half 80-100 prospect for him or a recent draftee that lost some of their shine similar to say Dillon Tate, but outside of that if the sox put him on waivers and he was claimed and JR didn't want to foot the bill he would be gone with no hassle. Even throwing out the likelihood for the Sox to pick up all $15 million due being near zero, I still don't see a top 100 prospect being the return for Melky. That seems a touch high.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 12:23 PM) Is this the first time we've seen for certain that this is who we want? Or do you think he's just assuming. It is the most definitive report of who we want that I can remember.

Quintana Rumors: Round and round and round we go
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Phil Rogers @philgrogers 28m28 minutes ago Idle thought: Could @whitesox land switch-hitting prodigy Josh Bell & Tyler Glasnow from Pirates in deal for Quintana & Todd Frazier? Phil Rogers @philgrogers 26m26 minutes ago @whitesox want Austin Meadows in Jose Quintana deal but Josh Bell also fits the need for young hitters w/big upside. Glad to see they are pushing for Meadows. That is the type of headliner they need.

Also logical landing places for Abreu/Frazier/Cabrera
QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Pretty generic rumor. Prospect or two could is pretty vague. I expect the Sox would want one top 100 type guy for Frazier, plus another flyer. Seeing as he didn't specify a "top" prospect in any way, shape, or form, I don't read it that way.

2016-2017 NCAA football thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 3, 2017 -> 11:27 AM) Not showing up for any important game is a big deal. The gameplan was s*** and its already cost one coach his job with another to follow. Same coaches had a brain fart that kept OSU out of the playoff last year when they were probably a team that could have done well. Still says nothing about them belonging as their resume already proved they did. So all of that is true, but Penn State couldn't have done better? That doesn't really make sense.
