  1. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Sep 17, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) Saladino has had an 18 game hot streak (OPS of .935 in that span). Before that, he was at a .674 OPS. That puts him dead last among qualified MLB 2Bs. Now at .738, there are only five MLB two-baggers below him (Phillips, Gennett, Panik, Utley and Harrison). Let's not act like Saladino is some proven hitter who can only be prevented from starting at second next year by the acquisition of Moncada or better. He's had a nice 18 games, but he's been BAD for most of his career. If regular Tyler (as in the player we've seen for 88% of his career) shows up and he's a starter, we are going to sink hard. Most of his career? lol. We are talking about a kid in his rookie year essentially. I do appreciate how instead of focusing on a hot streak, you picked out the exact lowest point he was at in a full three month span, and are treating that as if it was his entire season. That is his low point. Not his average, not his median. His zenith. His bottom. We are talking about a kid who hasn't even played a total of 162 games yet. Again, the average OPS of all 2Bs is .775. So he is slightly below average, with way above average defense. If you go off of Fangraphs OPS+, the kid is sitting 21st in baseball at 96 RC+. The crazy thing is that in the counting state of Dwar, he is 13th. If you were to extend him out to a full season's worth of games, he'd easily be in the top 10. What you are looking at already is a middle of the road major league 2B, if he doesn't improve a lick. If he improves a marginal amount, he is a top 10 major league 2B, as a cost of 500k for another two years.
  2. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 17, 2016 -> 09:26 AM) Sanchez? Immediately after talking about Tyler Saladino, and a lack of power, he said Carlos Sanchez.
  3. And for the record, after last night Tyler Saladino has an OPS+ of 102 on the season. That is without including his plus defense on the season. Accorinding to Fangraphs he has put up about 1.2 WAR and about $9.7 million in value when he has played somewhere close to half a seasons worth of baseball. Going by baseball reference, he is at 1.8 war.
  4. QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Sep 17, 2016 -> 05:17 AM) All of our bullpen guys so if someone goes down next year we know the order with which AAA relievers should be recalled. No reason to pitch our starters 110+ pitches in September with the season lost. Our pen is getting plenty of work.
  5. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:52 PM) He sucked for 73 games and has been hot for 18. Isn't that roughly how Avi Garcia operates? And look, a .674 OPS is textbook sucking. Out of all qualified second basemen in MLB, that would put him dead last by .025. Out of all SSs, which Sal can't really play, that OPS only puts five below him. When you account for his recently improved OPS, .730, four MLB 2B are below him, and 7 shortstops are. He sucks. We will continue to suck as long we continue to accept players of his caliber, not to mention promoting them into starting jobs. This year, he is close to league average at 2B as a hitter, and way above it as a fielder. Your rant has no basis in reality.
  6. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:13 PM) No Sox player is going to get a key hit. They might not even get a hit. Bravo.
  7. QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:09 PM) Tyler has a .672 career OPS. If it wasn't for his last 17 games, he'd be right above that mark this year too. The dude is f***ing garbage, but hey, let's start him over Brett Lawrie next year. It's cool- we're getting used to the cellar. Like I said...
  8. There is nothing more entertaining than when people show up to troll people based on a bad play or streak.
  9. Here is a new one, my HS team puts two players back on punts. The person who wasn't receiving the punt signalled for a fair catch in a trick play. No penalty called on the field, is that right?
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 07:17 PM) WOO, taking it back to the 1800's!! Not many, if any, of the people posting in here were alive for either. Its all history for us.
  11. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 05:54 PM) I'm not saying build a new one solely because of that, but the next one (as previously stated) will likely be on top of the Old Comiskey grounds. It would be difficult to angle that to have the skyline in the background and provide a nice aesthetic. As for amenities, that's why I said blend the two. Pretty sure with where the ballpark is, you will get apartment buildings in the background, and not downtown, unless you are up high.
  12. QUOTE (Reddy @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 01:57 PM) Wait there are people who think MLK was a universally beloved figure when he was alive in the 60s???? What has happened to our educational system? haha Probably a lot of the same people who think that about Lincoln.
  13. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:38 AM) He did but Tyler outperformed him. I don't think Tyler is a starting shortstop at the major league level but I don't think it's fair to say he was given a legit shot in spring training, Rollins was definitely the guy they wanted to go with. The logic was that all things equal, Saladino makes sense as the utility guy, while Rollins didn't.
  14. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 11:17 AM) My lord, you f***ing people. Do you seriously strangle splits for "when it mattered" with other players in other eras? With other players on other teams? Math nerds, please do me a favor and tell me how many more wins Jose Abreu would have netted us if his second half was his first half. Add that total to the Sox's win total and tell me if we're in contention yet because Jose Abreu hit "when it mattered" By the way - newsflash - if it turns out that Jose Abreu wouldn't have made a difference by himself "when it mattered" then guess what IT DIDN'T MATTER. JFC. A lot of you are looking WAY TOO HARD to find ways in which Jose Abreu had a bad season. I'm sorry, but Jose Abreu did not have a bad season. His season will end up being very, very similar to last season. Last season was a good season. Not spectacular, but good. If Jose Abreu had the 4 more home runs in the first half to make his numbers "acceptable", and if every one of those home runs turned a loss into a win, the Sox would still be out of contention. Yes, because calling people names totally makes your point valid.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:23 AM) And Saladino had a legit shot at the job in spring training. He didn't beat Rollins out. The cards were not stacked against him. Robin loves the guy. He almost made the team a few years ago. I mean, I don't get what Jimmy Rollins has to do with anything now. Tyler Saladino has come out and played a very solid season. They are going to be looking at that versus Jimmy Rollins winning the job in spring training. I mean that is so irrelevant, I am not sure why it is even mentioned.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 09:09 AM) http://thebaseballcube.com/players/profile...=Tyler-Saladino 11 games for a grand total of 63 innings at SS in 2015, essentially 7 games worth of time. In the end, still, there are just as many arguments about Saladino as a full-time starter at 2b in 2017 as there are about Ventura as a manager. Anyone can draw whatever conclusion/s they want and support them or not. Here's the thing, if they knew he was going to play the way he has...there was zero reason to add Jimmy Rollins. They could have started the year with Saladino and transitioned him to supersub when Anderson arrived. And showing the ability to play major league SS also would have increased his trade value to other teams. Almost an entire season has been played since Rollins was signed. Things have changed since then. This organization has had nearly an entire baseball season to evaluate the kid, and for him to grow up into the role.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 08:46 AM) You keep using losses as your reasoning, so I guess I do feel differently. Boston backed away from one injured guy and moved right on to another, and you are acting like they are smart for it because WINS Shields has been god awful, there is no way around that. but at the time of the trade he had 1 bad start the entire season, the 10 run crap start before he was traded. Look at his game logs http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/...p&year=2016 Mostly QS until the last start Which if you think about it, if Shields is injured, all of the sudden he starts pitching badly, and now SD changes their mind on trading him while withholding that info. The timeline kind of makes sense if you think about it that way.
  18. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 16, 2016 -> 08:17 AM) Assuming they carry 7 relievers next year with one being a long man, Burdi being called up second or third week of the season, and a second lefty, who fills out the other 4 spots? I have Jennings, Jones, Petricka and Putnam with Robertson moved. Unless someone in that group has options remaining that can be in the minors for depth purposes because we severly got bit by not having depth. If you have the back end covered, it is much easier to find guys to cover middle relief. It can be guys off of the scrap heap, or it can be minor leaguers.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 15, 2016 -> 10:03 PM) The problem is assuming that Jennings won't falter, that Putnam and Petricka will return seamlessly like Nate Jones and that Robertson's problem was related to overwork and nothing else. Putnam was a reclamation project and Petricka wasn't nearly as effective as he was earlier in his career where it even looked like he could be a closer. The wild card is Burdi. If he's as good as advertised and not starting in Winston-Salem or Birmingham, thry should be okay, but they probably need to find another lefty with as many lefty hitters as there are in the AL Central. The real problem is putting too much faith into small sample sizes instead of player history.
  20. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 15, 2016 -> 08:12 PM) Still have a nice 4 man rotation. The real problem is the pen. The pen isn't really that big of a problem. Robertson and Jones will be fine. We just rode them too hard when Putnam, Petricka, and Duke were taken out of the equation, and then we paid for it for a while. Jones hasn't given up a run since August. Robertson has given up a single run twice in his last 12 outings, and been scoreless in his other 10 during that stretch. His numbers have improved a ton since he hasn't been pitching back to back nor multiple inning outings. Dan Jennings has been a god send. Even with a little regression, he is still a really good reliever. The middle relief is scary right now, but again, we should have Putnam and Petricka back to cover up what guys like Beck and Ynoa are doing now. That isn't even counting on a guy like Zack Burdi who could come in and be better than all of them, and push everyone into lesser roles, nor is it counting on a cheap signing or two in the off season to fill a role in the middle relief sector.
  21. QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Sep 15, 2016 -> 06:18 PM) I don't really want us to finish the season on a positive note. Winning 60-70% of our remaining games will only make management think that Robin can get the job done next year. Let's lose, lose, lose, and get a new skipper. Getting performances out of players who will be here in 17 is WAY more important.
  22. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 8m8 minutes ago Important note: Twins seem committed to hiring president and GM, even though prez title in other orgs is reserved for longtime top execs.
  23. No mention of any investigation of the White Sox deal in the MLB statement. https://twitter.com/jaysonst/status/776529341429592065
  24. Narvaez, Leury, and Carlos Sanchez for the win. Very nice.
  25. Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 7m7 minutes ago Suspension for Preller is specific to Pomeranz trade. More more questions may be asked if more information re: other matters develops.
