White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 03:50 PM) I haven't built in anything. I was clear from the beginning that if they traded Sale for a bag of balls and nothing improves on the field, sure, attendance will either stay at the same miserable level its at, or possibly get worse. My point from the start is that if they get the kind of talent it at least appears they will, and that translates to better results on the field (i.e., MORE WINNING), then attendance goes up. That's what's simple. Period. That is the offer. Take it or leave it. I don't need to build in exceptions. If the Sox trade Sale, attendance will go down.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 03:38 PM) [Eye roll followed by exhausted sigh] Ok, SS2K5. You're on. Put yer George Washington's on the table. Borrow some from Dick Allen if you have to. On behalf of Thad Bosley LLP, I accept this compelling offer of yours re: 2017 attendance. If the Sox trade Sale and in the process bring back the kind of elite talent one would expect in a deal for him, and if the result is better play and more winning next year, then attendance will go up. Simple as that. I already see you built in an excuse to get out of it. Like I said, its simple. If Sale is gone, attendance will fall. Period.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 03:05 PM) What did 2008 and 2012 call and say? If he was really that confident he wouldn't be ignoring my offer. That's OK, I think he knows the truth and is just arguing for argument's sake.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 03:04 PM) 1990 and 2000 called and said "Hey, SS2K5! Check us out if you want to see how Sox fans respond, attendance-wise, to a new, young winning team! We will take your money any day of the week!" So what happened in 2008 and 2012?

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 02:31 PM) There are no imagined scenarios, but rather two actual ones which can occur. The Sox will be better without Sale, or worse. If they are better and win more, which there is a good chance of this happening if they obtain the kinds of players they've been rumored to be interested in, then attendance goes up. Fans are far more interested in winning than the presence of any one player. If they play worse, then attendance could go down, but you wonder how much farther down it can actually go, y'know? Yeah, Sox fan history totally doesn't agree with you. Look back at White Flag where team attendance fell by 25% year over year. Take a look at 2012 and 2008 where the team was in the playoff race both seasons, and attendance still fell year over year. To me this is a much more realistic lesson on what to expect than some imaginary scenario where the Sox get immediately better from trading their best player, and for some reason Sox fans realize it before day one and still show up. Again, I am willing to put money on it. If the Sox trade Chris Sale, their attendance will fall in 2017. Period. End of story. No qualifiers. No imaginary what if scenarios.

Tyler Saladino
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 02:14 PM) It's amazing the amount of people that in here clamoring for a .750 .OPS player. He's fine. Not special by any means though and would be best suited in a utility role. The MLB average for 2B in 2016 is .773. Throw into that Saladino ranks 22nd in all 2Bs in defensive WAR according to fangraphs while only playing 87 games so far this year means you are looking at a middle of the pack second baseman as is. Sure if a stud comes along you don't turn it down, but if this really is Tyler Saladino, he is a pretty acceptable player, assuming he doesn't improve or fall off. If he continues to improve you have a top 10 2B.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 02:06 PM) I'm gonna shock the bejeezus outta ya and take a completely different take. I say that winning trumps Sale's presence on the team. You might have had me if, for example, there were 40,000 people packed into the park on night's Sale pitched, but obviously that hasn't been the case. The overall malaise around the team caused by the playoff drought and the recent losing seasons has taken the shine off of having a talent such as Sale on the team, which explains the team's continued attendance problems. That's why the time has come for a clean slate, and hopefully by trading Sale at his maximum value will result in bringing in some new and exciting talent that will produce better results for the team on the field, and then ultimately for the team at the gate. I am not going to play the what if game. I don't feel the need to hide behind imagined scenarios. If Chris Sale is traded, attendance will fall in 2017. You can take me up, or try to imagine scenarios. The choice is up to you.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) Even if the team plays better, wins more, and is more exciting to watch overall as a result of the new players obtained? Attendance will go down, you think? I will put money on it right here and now. If the White Sox trade Chris Sale this winter, their attendance for the 2017 season will be less than 2016.

White Sox Listening on Sale
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 01:42 PM) If they get the kind of MLB ready-elite type talent like what has been rumored to be coming the team's way in any deal for Sale, who will improve the team's overall chances at success (i.e., the whole point of trading Sale at this time), then there will inevitably be more fans in the stands as the results of the team improve. If the Sox trade Chris Sale, their attendance will go down in 2017. No question about it.

AL Cy Young
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 12:46 PM) Who is punishing him for that? People are just saying they should be on the same playing field, not giving Porcello the benefit of the doubt cause his team is better. For all we know Sale and Q would have better numbers this year if they were in the race and they shouldn't be punished because their team f***in blows. But they aren't on the same playing field. Porcello is pitching in more important games in a pennant race. Sale and Q are not. They don't play the exact same schedule. They don't play the same teams. They don't play against the same line ups. They don't play on identical fields, in the same weather conditions. They don't have the same defense behind them. They don't have the same line ups hitting behind them. By not acknowledging that guys who are on top division teams are pitching in tougher games than the guys who aren't, you are punishing them for pitching more important games, instead of the other way around. No matter what at some point you are making judgement calls of what is more important. For my two cents, winning in a pennant race should carry weight over someone who puts up the same numbers with absolutely no pressure on you.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 11:16 AM) I'll take it. I wish more places and people would do the right thing even if for the wrong reasons. Make "doing the right thing" seem normal, not out of place, and we wouldn't have to deal with bigoted crap like this in the first place. So why is it different for whistleblowers and governmental corruption?

AL Cy Young
QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 12:20 PM) You're missing Jimmy's point. Why should Sale and Q be penalized for being on a bad team if they have (relatively) no control over it? Put Porcello on the White Sox and he'd probably have just 13-14 wins. Put Sale/Q on the Red Sox and they'd both have 20 wins easily by now. Why should Porcello benefit in the Cy Young race for being on a team that gives him loads of run support, if Sale and Q don't have that same luxury that's out of their control? The run support isn't important, and is more reflected through wins and losses, which aren't really that important. What is important is being successful in high stress situations, which is what a pennant race is. Why should a guy like Porcello be punished for the games he pitches in being more important than Sale or Q? Realistically, if all these awards are just going to be boiled down to purely statistics, there is no point in these awards having any meaning. Not everything in them should be black or white, or "fair", though I loathe the whole its not fair thing anyway. Baseball's scheduling isn't "fair". There should be a reward for winning on the big stage versus winning a whole bunch of meaningless games. There are intangibles in baseball, and these awards should recognize that on some level.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 12:16 PM) You are penalizing guys for something beyond their control though. Eh, I don't see that as super important here. Winning games in a pennant race should be more important than Q beating Minnesota while both teams suck.

AL Cy Young
QUOTE (Dunt @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 12:14 PM) That's a really dumb idea actually. Why should really good pitchers on bad teams be penalized for their teams performance? Should Josh Donaldson get more MVP consideration than Mike Trout since the Angels are garbage? No. Not at all. Pitching in important games should be more important than meaningless ones. It is kind of common sense to me.

My house is being attacked by birds.
QUOTE (shipps @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 09:22 AM) I have a cedar siding home and I have had a long running issue of birds pecking holes into the siding. It started on one side of the house. I patched it up and they came back leaving more holes for me to patch. I then put one of them toy hawks in the shrub to scare them away. That didnt really work because they still poked holes just not as frequently. Now they have graduated to the other side of the house and are putting holes there. I googled how to handle this issue but everything seems to be just using scare tactics which the birds dont seem to react to. Do any of you guys have any experience with this? What the hell can I do before they eat my house? Check and see if Guaranteed Rate is still looking for other sponsorship deals. That seems to keep people away.

AL Cy Young
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 11:15 AM) Going back to Andre Dawson in 1987 there's always been that debate that the Cy and MVP have to come from playoff contending teams unless the statistical dominance over the field is completely overwhelming voters have no choice. Sale winning over a Red Sox pitcher or even Verlander would be pretty shocking. The only thing more shocking would be Q. I do like the idea that there should be some weighting for putting up Cy Young numbers in a pennant race versus for a team that isn't in it.

2017 Lineup
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 11:10 AM) God help the White Sox when the Pujols years of that contract come due...the hard thing is still leaving major holes in CF, catcher, back end of the rotation and bullpen. Couldn't have any injuries to key players in 2017. ???

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 13, 2016 -> 11:04 AM) Great. So let's criticize them when they do the wrong thing and give them credit when they do the right thing, not ignore them when they do the wrong thing and then question their motives when they do the right thing. Eh, doing the right thing for the wrong reasons isn't really that admirable.
