  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 05:20 PM) Recent polls when the job was available would not agree with you. I heard Cowherd talking about a coaches poll and it was still regarded by head coaches as the top job in college football. Then why does everyone turn it down? ND has had to bring in their 4th or 5th choice both of the last two times the spot opened up.
  2. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 05:17 PM) Apparently Smith was again not interested. I'm not sure what he is thinking. He is pretty much toast in a year. I wonder if TN is in line for sanctions or something.
  3. I don't think there is much of an argument that Peavy is the better pitcher. It still doesn't make him the leader of this staff.
  4. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 05:14 PM) To you and Balta both - I'm actually raising a question about creating some sort of an organization that offshoots from the military that deals with this stuff. I understand both of your points as to the "heavy lifting" and support that the military provides, but they are not a rescue operation by and large - they are not designed for it. Security - agreed, but they are also not supposed to be police, either. I'm not saying assholes are being assholes, I'm leaving that judgement out of it. I'm just asking a question from the logistics side, which Balta and you both partially addressed. I'm just more or less thinking out loud - the military is supposed to blow stuff up, not be peace keepers and police and aid. So is there an arm that should be created for this? Or is that more bureaucratic crap? Well they do have a wing of Military Police... after that I don't know.
  5. Speaking of big named washouts... has anyone heard if anyone has signed John Van Benschoten?
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 12:05 PM) You think they are going to trade Jenks, this late in the offseason? They tried already, and had no luck. Unless something happens in spring training to cause another team to really need him, I don't see it happening either.
  7. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 01:05 PM) Personally, I don't care (and I doubt many within the team do), but I believe it'll be Buehrle every opening day until he's gone, injured, or ineffective as a starter. This is Mark Buehrle's team, or at very least his pitching staff, until otherwise notified. He has earned it.
  8. The only reason I even care about this is that it will be nice to get some real programming back in the 9pm hour on NBC.
  9. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 10:48 AM) News events break with the mkts not the other way around; Whenever there is a sqaureout/trend change in the mkt, you will see a corresponding news event that follows. I am talking purely technichal here. The Fed has nothing to do with this pullback. We should close today in the low 1130's. But if we break 1130.38 on SPX and there is no bounce, we could fall to 1119.75 on futures. FWIW.... I think you have the cause and effect backwards... The market makes the news whatever it wants to make it.
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 09:01 AM) what politician isn't a hypocritical douche? Verified as the 100% truth.
  11. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 03:10 PM) Become a fan of Home Run Inn on facebook. 1) because it's the best god dam pizza in Chicago and 2) because they donate $2 for every new fan to the American Red Cross for Haiti Relief. That's in addition to the $5,000 they already donated. It is good to see so many organizations coming together to help out.
  12. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 02:09 PM) Cool. thanks. So, my guess is the reason there is so much more support int his telethon is because it's closer to home? Pretty much. Honestly, in terms of scales, I think the Boxing Day Tsunami might have been the biggest disaster for generations. We were just lucky its effects were suffered in a spot of the world that wasn't as densely populated as others, or the death toll could have been multiples of what it was.
  13. Here is your chance to win passes to Soxfest, all you have to do is say why in 140 characters or less. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/cws/commun...c%5B01152010%5D
  14. QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:55 AM) Yea, trading Granderson, one of the premier players in the game to shed payroll, and then overpaying for a good, but not elite reliever. I can't say I understand it, but I'm not complaining. They let a ton of players walk away. This isn't going to be your cousin's Tigers team.
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:51 AM) Wait.... so we're cool with Joe Cowley now? Soxtalk is bi-polar. Don't worry, he probably stole the story anyway because it was written without being from a two year old's point of view.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:31 AM) According to local press reports, it was not an official offer, but UT did ask to see if Lovie Smith would be interested in their job at a $4 million/year contract. Again this year?

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:49 AM) My argument would be that they could set up a different story in the same setting, adding to the "world" they've created. It depends on how much of the past they show in season 6, but I would be VERY interested in a show about the history of the island. You could essentially create the same show but circa the 18th century (the black rock crew for example), or even ancient times. I agree that Star Trek is different; a very basic story - searching the universe - with stories contained within the episodes. But at the same time, Lost broke the mold on a new generation of scripted television. Who's to say they couldn't continue reinventing the wheel? I think at the very least ABC has to get some writers together to see what they can come up with. It's too good of a story not to. The biggest issue is whether they can recreate the insanse amount of details that cause people to research obscure things (philosophy, religion, books, music, whatever) to see how it fits and to talk about it with their friends afterwards. Heck, how much could they do on the original Jacob story?
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:36 AM) Fine. Please provide examples of said denials. So I am sure you don't see mocking the other side for their worry about what happened as being important, but that pretty much is the point here. I know you don't get that.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:30 AM) This is a joke right? Someone has denied its a big deal? Someone is failing to acknowledge it? Of course you don't see it that way.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:27 AM) What do you mean "Act like it"? Spell it out, what more should be done publicly? The whole liberal attack machine has been in full throat to shout down anything that suggests this should be a big deal. Look no further than here or the Democrats thread for great examples. It is kind of hard to act like this is a big deal when you as a party go out of your way to down play that an airplane was almost blown up full of passengers. Let's start by acknowledging what happened here.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 08:24 AM) The issue then is...what do you do in response to that? Race back to D.C., hold public meetings with the victims families (even though there aren't any?), start bombing places randomly? Or do you order a rapid, immediate set of investigations into what went wrong and start looking at new procedures to try to make sure it doesn't fail again? I could see a few firings if there were specific people who failed, but again, this looks like specific systemic issues that still haven't been fixed because of lack of communication, turf wars, combined with lack of security funds overseas. Or act like we weren't this close to 300 dead people...
  22. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) Look at how the Giants D finished though. Injuries were definitely a factor but Coughlin is on the hot-seat in New York too. injuries weren't huge for the Bears D?
  23. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jan 15, 2010 -> 06:19 AM) I actually have no idea what you're talking about so I can't even respond. Failing to do what empowers whom? And why? I don't even know what you're calling for. FWIW this is how it played in the Arab press - the last week or so of December it got ignored, or got a very vague passing mention in most outlets with the exception of maybe one Saudi newspaper that's heavily anti-AQ. The narrative of Islamic terrorists just doesn't really get that much play there anymore unless it's something big, and all the news was about Gaza (it always is). Then after some of the talking heads started hyperventilating they started covering it except the tone is "what the hell is wrong with the Americans?" The fact that Obama waited a few days to make a statement and didn't interrupt his vacation didn't do any strategic damage at all, whereas if he had, that's the reaction they want us to have. I can't imagine they actually thought a failed terrorist attack where the dude ends up setting his balls on fire would actually end up being a successful terrorist attack but the cadre of p*****s on TV alley-ooped that for them. I think the big problem with this is that the only thing that separated this from being a successful attack was blind luck. The system completely failed. That is the important thing that everyone seems to be forgetting here.
  24. There is no such thing as a bank giving a high interest rate right now. The highest thing you are probably going to find now is about 1% or so.
  25. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 14, 2010 -> 10:17 PM) That doesn't matter to me. I'd put our rotation easily over anybody in our division. That's all that matters until October. Of course the first thing that matters is winning the division, but that wasn't the question in this specific thread.
