QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) I wouldn't say a 4-3 OT win is owning them, but yeah, I get where you're coming from. In other news, this team is f***ing scary. They have so much talent. They came back from down 3-1. That is huge against a team like that.

Well this is the best team in the West, and the Hawks have owned them twice now.

The most I would offer the guy is a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

So HOssa debuts tonight, and they don't drop the puck until after 9:30... I hate the circus trip.

White Sox sign Andruw Jones
QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) My gut reaction is to disagree with the general concesus of this being a positive move. First of all Jones has a rep as player who dogs it, just ask Bobby Cox. He was almost certainly a roider who hasn't been able to cut the mustard lately. Now, he may be hungry and wanting to prove a point and could have a great year, but personally, I doubt it. I hope the concensus is right and I'm proven wrong, but this is the way I see this move. Low risk, lower reward. If he is, you cut him. No loss.

White Sox sign Andruw Jones
QUOTE (klaus kinski @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) Good move-didnt spend $ that could still be used for the bullpen. I just thought he was older than 32 Does this kill any Thome talk? I think there is still a legitimate discussion for Thome coming back, especially if Jones can play any OF at this point. Hell he can't be worse than what we have been running out there on a regular basis.

White Sox sign Andruw Jones
Really we are a lead off hitter and some bullpen work away from the off season being over, that is unless Kenny can make a splash. Even the pen might be something that comes back pretty close to the same, when you look at how volatile pens can be, it might be worth a gamble to stand pretty close to pat. I know we will look for a bargain or two out there, but nothing to set the world on fire.

White Sox sign Andruw Jones
If this is viewed as a bench signing, I wonder who the last OF target really is. It is a great gamble here. At worst he costs us basically the same thing that a call up from the minors does. At best, he is great.

Is anyone as nervous as I am?
QUOTE (elgonzo4sox @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 12:21 AM) Yes, but this could very well be a one-time occurrence due to the shiny new stadium and the lust for outdoor baseball. After some cold rainy/snowy April games against the Royals, the new stadium buzz will fade. Then the Twins will realize why they build a covered stadium 28 years ago and why they should have built a retractable roof over Target Field. They will also realize that they gave up the best home field advantage in baseball, and have to completely retool their team. Goodbye Punto - you are an artificial turf aberration - maybe you can find a spot on the Rays or Blue Jays. Minneapolis is a smaller, less wealthy city than Chicago, and once they eliminate the Twinkiedome advantage, the Twins should resemble the Royals more than the White Sox. OK, maybe that's a little harsh, but there will be no fundamental reason why Minneapolis should have an advantage in the AL Central. None of that changes the money that they have never seen from luxury suites and the amenities of a new place. And the big thing is that you don't sell an area on a new stadium, and then not bring back your superstars. You might as well contract the team at that poin.

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 09:40 AM) What if you package Sharp and Campbell? I know that is a lot of cash but that is still pretty good talent especially for a team that has the cap room. What team out there has over $10 million in cap space, and it is fiscally able to take on that kind of money?

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) No, its seasonally adjusted, so its not a holiday bump. And actually, you need two numbers to figure out job growth - there is no magic number of UE claims, IMO, that signals growth, because it is not about growth anyway. Growth is jobs added, which is a different number. 400k new claims might be reported and we lose jobs, 500k reported and we are gaining them. The are related but not perfectly correlated. With all of the layoffs and cutbacks, most places are very thin. It is conceivable that you could have much larger than normal holiday season temporary hiring going on.

Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 10:35 AM) It may have been just "one incident," but its outrageously inappropriate timing is strongly indicative of a potential alcohol problem. I have no idea whether Cabrera in fact has such a problem or not, but my "not bright" comment was merely meant to suggest that the incident raised an additional red flag to consider in light of the huge contract. This isn't Cedric Benson who's problems occurred offseason and could be picked up for a song. Furthermore, and maybe I'm being too defensive here, but IMO a post that compares somebody's drunken spousal abuse to their weight issues and suggests that the former could be cured by a manager "getting in his face" shouldn't be labelling other's comments as "not bright." Actually it wasn't even one incident. There are at least two instances at the same place, at least.

QUOTE (Tex @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 10:40 AM) That was like Schoolhouse Rocks. Awesome. My Monday lesson will be grievances and how they were addressed with the Bill of Rights and/or Constitutional Principles, then George Washington, any thoughts? My favorite history stuff was when it had a tie in to today. I would say some of the big state/little state fights, and how the protection of minority voting rights (in the less than 50% idea) is still showing up today in things like the electoral college and the filibuster today.

Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 03:32 AM) I really don't think the contract is anything to shy away from. MCab will most likely outperform what he is slated to make every year, barring some sort of injury problems or some sort of catastrophic event that somehow derails his career. While it is hard to conceive a huge package of players coming back to Detroit in return for taking on the contract, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities that they could receive a package of young talent in excess of what the Padres received for Jake Peavy. Anyone who wanted us to acquire MCab from the Marlins (and briefly we were seeing published reports that we had acquired him) should have expected him to demand this type of extension. I'm not really sure why the contract is looked at so negatively here. Certainly it is a lot of money, but from what I understand, it's still not an annual figure he won't outperform by posting his current career averages. If we were to acquire AGon, I imagine any extension he might demand will probably use the MCab deal as a primer by his agent. In this economy? I think you are underestimating the seriousness facing ownership groups this season.

It is never burned and tastes great. Never green. Chicken Planet is awesome. Get the half chicken with BBQ and the mashed potatoes. Thank me later.

Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) I don't think Boston would have to give up Clay or really anything close to that. IMO, the Tigers aren't going to trade Cabrera unless ownership wants payroll basically cut in half between 2009 and 2010 (going from $129M+ down to the $70M or less range), and if that does become the case, there aren't many teams that will be willing or able to take on that deal. The Angels and Dodgers don't even look like they'd be able to take that on, so it's pretty much Red Sox vs. Yankees vs. Mets. Not a lot of leverage for Detroit. I don't think Cabrera will be moved, but if he is, it'll be kind of like the Peavy deal: a grossly low cost paid in talent for a truly elite player in his prime. $20,000,000 is a massive cost for any player, considering only 4 player made that in 2009, and three of them played in the same place.
