QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) if they can shed that contract, the next 5 years at the least would be set for awesomeness (not that they aren't already looking good) It opens up worlds of flexibility for them. I just can't see anyone taking him without dumping their own bad contract on us.

Official: Omar Vizquel Signs with Sox
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) I don't know... Teahen and Beckham's D% at 3B last year was nearly identical. (.956 Teahen, .952 Beckham.) Seems to be very close for two guys who either had never played 3B before last season or who hadn't played a significant amount at 3B for abou 3 years. Beckham had very little range at 3B last year, which makes his numbers in fielding percentage look better than the probably were. The kid struggled there.

Fall of '09 television thread
QUOTE (SnB @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 12:30 PM) the office has picked it up the last couple episodes. The one last week about the Murder was just phenomenal and yesterday's was good. There was some great stuff last week, this week was solid. I enjoyed the Ryan storyline a lot.

Did Texas Accidentally Ban Straight Marriage?
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) Cool! I'm going to go kick Mrs. Kap out of the damn house right now. [cut to Kap in his underwear on the front lawn scratching his head puzzled]

What's the strangest/funniest/wildest non-baseball thing at USCF

QUOTE (earthshiner @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) I think this was the second to last home game back in 2000. Thomas was pushing for the MVP and they were handing out signs that had 'MVP 35' or something like that on them. Paper airplanes were flying the entire game. At one point a plane flew from the right field upper deck across to the left field upper deck. I think the entire crowed was watching it. When it landed everyone cheered. I still have one of those, it is up on my wall.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) I like the move as long as he doesn't play more than 20 games. 1 year deal, if CJ doesn't get moved he plays a year in AAA and is your backup IF next year? 20 games? Um, he probably plays in 60-80 games, when you include the PH and late inning replacement games.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) We actually need some power on our bench When and where is he going to play? He isn't going to replace Beckham, because Gordo is a much better hitter than he is, and he isn't a liability at 2B. He can't play SS or 3B to save his life, so he isn't going in there.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) We also are getting a very stabilizing clubhouse guy in Omar Vizquel. This isn't a move that you get super excited about, but its the type of move that does so many little things that it could really pay off pretty nice. Great Defense, Great Baserunner, Can Bunt, Can Teach our young guys, very good clubhouse guy. Ya, I like this a lot. Good point on the clubhouse stuff, since that seems to have been an issue.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 12:54 PM) I don't want to see Nix off the team, as I think he's a great asset to a team against LHP and was a great base runner. Right now he would be a waste of a roster space. He would essentially be a pinch hitter against lefties and pinch runner.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 11:54 AM) Maybe he helps him, maybe he doesn't. I don't really see what it matters. The whole "mentor" thing is just speculation anyway, Vizquel is a good fit as a defensive specialist backup infielder when you have 3 question marks on defense at 3B, SS and 2B. Assuming he does get signed, I'm just glad that the Sox are showing a little interest in defense -- they've been indifferent for quite a while. Totally agree. Even people want to piss on the "mentor" part of things (and I would also include a very young Gordon Beckham as a guy who could learn a lot of things from Omar), the guy is going provide great defense, smart ABs, and fill in over the entire IF defense, instead of just one spot.

Rule 5 Draft
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 11:48 AM) I'm really suprised that we didn't protect Shelby. I thought this year was going to be a breaking point in terms of prospect-status for him, but the potential the Sox saw him with still exists. No way he doesn't get claimed. What about his year last year screams put me on a major league roster for a year?

I remember many times seeing people get high on the ramps behind the scoreboard in CF at the old ballpark.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 11:06 AM) I absolutely love this move. Bye bye, Nix. If Nix could play decent defense at anywhere besides second base, he would be a great bench player. It is hard to justify a bench spot for a guy who can only play 2B.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 10:58 AM) I noticed that last year he played 2B, SS and 3B. Prior, he had really only played SS. For his defense alone this could be a pretty good move. I am sure he will do his filling in, but to me, this is a great move as essentially another coach.

QUOTE (daggins @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 10:51 AM) I was kind of thinking it might be nice to get a john mcdonald type elite defender for backup, so this would be nice. Maybe he can teach Alexei a thing or two. Bingo. That was my very first thought. This guy is reknown as one of the smartest players to ever play the game. If you can bring a guy like this in to teach your very young IF a few things (both Becks and Ramirez) this is win win.

People Good at Probability and Statistics
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) There is enough information to perform an F-Test comparing standard deviations. Don't ask me how to do the math by hand, I gave that up as a bad habit long ago. Then again, that is only going to test the validity of a key underlying assumption of parametric statistics — that the two samples are drawn from the same statistical population. H0 is no difference between boys and girls and H1 is that there is a difference, right? With the means differing by 0.2, large sample size, very large standard deviations, and a 1% confidence level to reject the null, I can pretty much guarantee no statistical difference here. But I refuse to do the math because SoxTalk promised there would be no math. LETS GO SHOPPING!

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 08:06 AM) he's 5th in the league with a 2.17 GAA. His save % is .907 which is like 24th in the league, not to knock him, but shows how well our defense is playing and keeping the number of opponents shots low khabi has a 3.03 GAA It wasn't too long ago that Save% was in the .840 range...

What's the strangest/funniest/wildest non-baseball thing at USCF
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 01:21 AM) May 22, 2006. Frank Thomas' first game back at USCF as a member of the A's. Soxtalk/WSI had a patio party, Jon Garland welcomed Thomas back by allowing him to cream 2 HRs, Ozuna wins it for the Sox with a walk-off bunt single. But, what does everyone remember that was there? That damn squirrel. I remember the people sitting in teh front row singing the Sesame Street song with Huston Street warming up, and then serving up the game.

Derek Lowe?
Contracts like this are pretty much an immovable object except for getting another similar contract. Maybe they could deal Lowe for Zito, but they aren't going to get anything worthwhile for him.

JR: We've Already Signed our Free Agent, Jake Peavy
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 12:51 AM) Over the last 3 seasons he's averaged 78 games played, 306 plate appearances and a .293 OBP. People need to seriously let him go already. I am one of Joe's biggest fans, but he is done. Let him go.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 11:01 PM) I keep saying this, but the curse of the 2nd year player in Chicago lives on. I don't know if the players get celebrated too much in the offseason and just don't stay in shape, but it's a disturbing trend of late. Its more like losing the only other dependable scorer makes it a lot tighter game for Rose.
