Official 2009-2010 NHL Thread
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:39 PM) I keep hearing that it is more Mcdonough inquiring because Sharp (and Versteeg) was one of Tallon's prized acquisitions and the fact that they both didn't like each other (in order for Mcdonough/Bowman to more or less put their "acquired" guys on the ice) though I'm not sure if that is correct. I can;t see the Hawks taking apart their second line, unless they know some of the Rockford guys can put up 50 points.

From the other side of Hawaii... so Japan should be in trouble, or California, either way, I should be OK.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:20 PM) Here's one possible answer; livestock. Another is probably immigration patterns; much larger population between Europe and Asia. The big ones I heard were influenza, small pox, and measles. Those were from animals?

Shopping Info ~ Where are the deals?
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) I will never shop on Black Friday if I live to be 1,000 years old. So you started shopping how many years ago?

QUOTE (1977 sox fan @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 10:12 PM) they already spent on cuddyer plus they will try to extend hardy and still have 3rd possibly 2nd base to fill and there's talk to adding another starter so thats atleast another 15mil combine for 3 to 4 spots on there roster MAUER will cost a min of 20mil even at a home discount so thats around 100mil even its 95mil thats what were spending and we don't have a mauer or morneu in our lineup there also spending 11mil on nathen . but remember there a small market what is Chicago ? The Twins are also about to get a ginormous shot in the arm through 10's of millions of dollars in new revenue through their own stadium for the first time in their existence.

OK so I watched America before Columbus tonight and had this thought. The Euro's came over and brought all kinds of diseases that Indians had never seen before and 60-90% of them died after that. So how come it didn't work the the other way? After thousands of years of isolation, why weren't there any nasty things that were here that the Europeans had never been exposed to?

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:29 PM) So if I say I'm not proud of our president today, and meant it, without the Dixie Chicks reference, I'd be flamed all over the place. Hell, I might even be considered to have portrayed a death threat or something. And you'd be a racist.

White Sox Interested In Coco Crisp
QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) I would rather have Crisp than Pods...just for the fact that IIRC Crisp actually can play defense. THis is pretty much how I feel.

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:23 PM) http://www.kentucky.com/news/state/story/1032979.html I think we can safely rule it out now. But we should probably use up the rest of the tinfoil so as to get our monies worth. I guess that's what happens when you assume...

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) I'm married and if I made 130k + benefits I'd be very well off. Depending on how you define rich, I could be rich making that money. In comparison to the richest people in the world...no, but 130k+ for me, I'd be rich, yes. But being rich had nothing to do with my point. They're paid a lot for what they do. And I'm friends with a congressmen, so I know what they do and what they consider "work". Well according to Obama's team, if they make anything through their spouses or outside sources, they would be defined as rich.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) You can't trace the debt, or even the deficit, to any one thing, or even to one concept. It just is. There's probably 9 or 10 things that need to happen to control the deficit, none of them are popular. Its not a great secret that the greatest outlays we have are security and social programs.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 03:04 PM) Unfortunately, I think both are gone. Sopel to the Leafs and Barker to the Sens. So says the rumor mill. They said something on Jurko and Harry about Shapie being bantered about as well. That scares me.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:56 PM) Who said it was good? Nevermind. If you drop 10% and recover 2%, that can show that things are recovering, but it still doesn't mean things are better. That can be a simple function of people finally having to spend, as was demonstrated by the statistics that came out after cash for clunkers was done, that showed high amounts of backlogged buying had taken place. It becomes a statistical anomaly at some point. I don't believe "surprising growth" in retail sales means anything more than it does anywhere else, especially since lots of those numbers can be interrelated. When you buy a new house, lots of people buy new furnature, new TVs, new stereos etc.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:38 PM) I think you are still missing what I am saying here. Why have the numbers increased, over time, over the last few months, even when seasonally adjusted? What has changed? No, I am not. Improving still doesn't mean good, or even respectful. It just means they have come off of how far they have fallen. It still doesn't make them good.

Miguel Cabrera could be traded?
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) I would assume any team that was after him then felt as though they would have to pay him somewhere in the neighborhood of what he got from Detroit. The Sox were almost that team... Anyways, the key is who, today, has that kind of payroll flexibility to add $20,000,000 a year for the foreseeable future?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 12:34 PM) I still think it's remarkable that you guys can complain about the deficit on one hand and then defend the current system, that costs 1.5x as much per person as any other country on earh, at the same time, and not realize how those are 100% linked. Or even worse, still pretend that the private nature of our system is 100% innocent, when all the data screams the opposite. Ok so who has said 100% innocent? And for God's sake, let's quit pretending that a $12 trillion debt is some fault of health care. It isn't. That is complete crap.

Financial News
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 12:28 PM) What stimulus money? The only real cash anyone is getting is unemployment, which is only higher than normal in length because it was extended. You think that few % of people who have extended benefits are making that difference? Also, that doesn't really answer the question. My question is not why is it not crashing further - because its not doing that anyway. My question is, why is it going UP? People who go to unemployment don't suddenly start spending more, in fact they probably spend a lot less. So that makes this bump even stranger. I am not talking about housing here, BTW, I am referring to repeated months of stronger than expected retail sales (and I am looking at the numbers that leave out autos, because that was way artificially high, then way artificially low, thanks to Cash for Clunkers). Higher than expected are still much lower than what those numbers have been in the past. It is the game of low expectations at play for lots of this data.
