  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 03:09 PM) I'll give you the fact that he is good with players. That may help the development of young kids. But he didn't want Beckham even here. He pencils him into the lineup every day out of sheer necessity. I don't see how that is showing great developmental skills. Ozzie said that because he wanted the guys in the clubhouse to not worry about looking over their shoulder everyday, and so that they wouldn't have to worry about the manager undercutting them. Its to keep the clubhouse in tact, nothing else.
  2. Awesome. now it will be interesting to see what happens with Morgado and Goodwin over the next 2.5 weeks.
  3. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 03:02 PM) But how long until those best young players are gone? The minors are wearing thin...our two best spects Beach and Aliu are boom-bust prospects, we have very little money to spend on NUMEROUS free agents next year. If they are able to keep Keith, Toews and Kane next year without jettisoning numerous '2nd tier guys' I will be astounded and shocked. Now comes this Hossa thing...no one thinks having one of your best players being out for 20 some games could hurt? Remember two years ago? The hawks missed the playoffs by 3 POINTS. J.Toews missed 18 games that season...of those 18 games, they won only FOUR I believe. Great player out, can't win, miss playoffs. Now, I don't think that will happen this year. I think there is enough talent to hold off the fort, but these managing decisions are mind-boggling. Not getting a physical on a guy prior to inking him to a 60 million dollar contract is bad. Sorry, but right now the Blackhawks are a poorly run organization. They have been winning on the ice, because they were also previously poorly run and were able to parlay that incompetence into high picks/good talent. Toss in some excellent scouting wins where the Hawks landed excellent value and you have a good baseline of talent. but the ability to manage the organization is questionable at this time. I hope I am wrong...I hope Stan can really turn things around or I fear the Blackhawks window of opportunity will close before it even opens, and playing in the West with the great young teams will be challenging...also, St.Louis is already a terrific young team and still have a bucketload of prospects ready to come up. Columbus is also good and young and has what may be a star in the making goalie. In short, It's not gonna be easy for an organization that makes snaufs like the hawks have been making. Clean it up Stan The entire NHL knows what the odds are that Havlat plays 80 games again next year. Last year was the first time it has EVER happened covering a nine year career. He hadn't even been over 70 since his second year in the league. The same argument could have been made for keeping him around. As for Hossa he has played at least 70 games for the last 10 seasons. His numbers also kick sand into the face of anything Havlat has ever done.
  4. QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:42 PM) I predict the White Sox trade Brian Anderson to the Red Sox for Mark Kotsay. Mark my word. Now the question is does this qualify as White Flag II?
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) Defend. Give Kenny Williams a call...
  6. We do know that Colon pretty much as to start that last game of the Twins series because otherwise Richard would be going on 2 days of rest.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:49 PM) Well technically I'd have to break into my own house right? Crap. I was never good at details.
  8. I really like having a quality run producer at the bottom of the line up. It really helps get things back to the top of the order.
  9. QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) Sox heading in the youth movement. Kenny couldn't have gotten anything better than this? A AA prospect? Anything? It would have happened years ago if anyone else really wanted Brian Anderson.
  10. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:37 PM) Yeah, I was writing that when you made your last post. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:38 PM) samesies. Apologies. Its cool, that is why I reposted it. Sometimes you miss posts while posting.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:31 PM) They also reported on CNN yesterday that the cop called the caller to 911 back while going to the call to get more information, and that is when the race of Gates was clarified. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) You don't find the discrepancy interesting? The cop defends himself by saying that he was called about two black men with back packs on a possible break-in. Yet the phone call mentions nothing of black, nothing of backpacks, in fact it says briefcases (this isn't the thomas crown affair), and states that it could be their house and they were just concerned neighbors in case something came up. Now, I'm not an old black professor who has studied race relations and has probably come across profiling in my life, I'm in pretty good shape being an educated white male with impeccable looks. And for the most part I'm more than polite and submissive to cops. But there have been a few times where I've become extremely frustrated and snippy when continuing to get berated when clearly nothing had been wrong, had given them proof of age, and that nothing was being done wrong, and still they persisted, claiming they had right to check my vehicle, which they didn't. And when I did not give them permission they threatened. now from my personal experience I can see getting really frustrated if a cop were to come in my house late at night claiming I'm a burger after a trip when it is my house. And then further when proven that the house is my own. Because the fact is the officer holds a lot more power than I do. And this officer arresting someone for getting his feelings hurt after doing nothing wrong and really nothing to even provoking an officer really makes me question. At first when I heard that the officer was called on two black males breaking in, I thought it was just a question of things heating up and the officer going too far. BUt now that I know the nature of the phone call, it really makes me wonder. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:33 PM) 911 operator asked what race the people she saw were and the caller said she couldn't really tell. Crowley said he was told 2 black men were breaking into the house. The caller never said anything about black men so it's unclear where he got that from. I was watching CNN yesterday when the played the tape. About 10 minutes after that they reported that the cop contacted the caller to 911 for further clarification and that was when she said the person "breaking in" was black.
  12. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 02:26 PM) The cop's story doesn't match reality unless the 911 operator lied to him. They also reported on CNN yesterday that the cop called the caller to 911 back while going to the call to get more information, and that is when the race of Gates was clarified.
  13. So that means DeWayne Wise gets to test waivers. This ought to be fun.
  14. Thank god. That is one less horrible argument to be had here.
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) Which is exactly where some of us think the racial component winds up coming in to this. Unless there are obvious racial overtones (the cop yelling "hey N***** get out of that window") I don't assume the worst possible motives. There is nothing to suggest if the prof had been white and berating the cop, that they cop wouldn't have hauled him in either. The most obvious answer isn't that the cop is a racist, it is that the cop has no patience for people who don't "respect" him.
  16. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) You'd have to get me invited too, preferably after rush hour though. Why don't you come break into my house, and we can go from there? [/green]
  17. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) A 36 year old Dotel is likely to decline arbitration though to hold out for a multi-year deal, which makes his Type A free agent status come into play and adds value in a trade. Historically I think you are right, but the way last off season went, I bet he would jump at the guarenteed 7 million dollars or so.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox420* @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:11 PM) Looking at MLBTR which I know is not a source I went to the site it links to for a rumor and found it to be the NYPost(not a real source either)... http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives...y_trade_co.html but it mentions the possible availability of one CARL CRAWFORD... What ya guys thinks? Thats one of Kenny's guys and if he is really available how can Kenny not be interested I would LOVE to have Crawford, but I believe he is almost a FA (this year or next?), which would deter me a bit.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:44 PM) Gates was acting like a dickhead and honestly kind of created that situation. It seems to me that the cop failed to exercise common sense though. Taking him in for disorderly conduct wasn't necessarily "wrong" but it didn't lead down any productive path. He should've just been professional and let Gates be a dickhead and get it out of his system instead of trying to "teach him a lesson" or whatever he thought he was doing. Obama should've punted that question or gave a standard political answer (there is a reason those exist). He's someone you think would know better. That is pretty much how I saw things. If either of the two gets off of their high horse for a minute and tries to understand the other person, this never happens.
  20. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) I think between CKnolls, Kap, you and I, we could probably help teach Obama a thing or two. We could also teach him about good beer. lol. Heck, maybe I can try to get him to call me stupid. I'd love a free trip to Washington, oh and a free beer!
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 07:49 AM) All true. But there are still rules for what orders can be or can't be internalized, and further rules about where transactions have to be shown if they are going outside the walls. And there are disclosure rules about all of it. Its not a big secret or a big conspiracy. It also doesn't hurt the customers one single penny. In fact most companies use internalization to give small price improvements to their customers which they can then use in their advertising campaigns.
  22. QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 09:18 AM) Call the White House maybe they can fit you guys in too! I'm sure once Obama accuses us traders of acting stupidly, he can get us in for a beer...
  23. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) I think you are off on a few things here. First, the federal government only owns a small % of land in this country, so the idea that the gov't already owns anything valuable or puts mines out of business is patently false. And buying up bad housing units one-off is not what I am talking about - my plan was not meant to single-handedly fix the housing collapse, as nothing could possibly come close to doing that. Also, in terms of the economics, your numbers don't make any sense. First, money is not money, in the housing market - liquidity is a key factor here, and increasing liquidity in the market, itself, creates more equity and higher prices. And this idea that the housing market is continuing to crater is both an argument FOR doing what I suggested, and also missing the recent months' trends that all show otherwise. Last I knew the federal government was the largest single land owner in the entire country.
  24. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) So, a poster presents actual evidence... you say the opposite, without any evidence, and that you will say nothing more, and that everyone else is reading propaganda. Did I miss anything? If you would like to hear some great 1st hand stories about why the VA sucks, I could tell you my dads stories starting when he got blown through a wall during a bombing run in 1969 in Vietnam and running up until today. I could also give some of the first hand experiences he has had with many of the other governmental programs he has gotten the run around in since 1983 when he was deemed unable to work anymore.
  25. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 28, 2009 -> 11:28 AM) Do your parents and grandparents refuse government controlled Medicare? Which is exactly why the CBO projected numbers for this are garbage. The estimates of only 39,000,000 people in this program by 2019 are a joke. I'd be shocked if it was less than double that number. As soon as taxes are started getting paid for government health care, people are going to view it as another entitlement. Businesses are going to drop cover en masse because it will be cheaper for them in the long run. No one will buy private health care because the government will undercut their pricing.
