  1. Happy Birthday to one of the most informative posters on the site!
  2. You almost have to wonder if Burls throws a two hit shutout yesterday, how different would today have been?
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 10:49 PM) Sox scouts were in Baltimore tonight. That means either Mora or Sherrill.
  4. The Day After was a movie about a post nuclear attack in the US (IIRC), how sadly appropriate.
  5. Wow. What a steal.
  6. QUOTE (YASNY @ Jul 24, 2009 -> 11:16 AM) I would like to open this up for the purpose of communicating to other Soxtalk members what can be found to commerate this historic event. Simple example: Does Buerhle make the cover of the next SI? If you see it, or anything similar or avaialble, put it here. Larry do you want copy's of the newspapers? Let me know and I can pick them up for you.
  7. Buehrle is the front page picture of the Trib today with the caption "Perfect"
  8. I heard this on the Score last night, and thought it might be a fun topic. Evidently after his no hitter Burls bought his teammates very nice watches. So the question is how should Mark replay DeWayne Wise after his miraculous catch in the 9th inning yesterday?
  9. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 11:02 PM) Yep. In the 110 years of baseball and god only knows how many games there have been, there has never been a rally in the 9th started by a bunt. Please list all the rallies to comeback and win a game in the bottom of the 9th you know of that started off with a swinging hit. Like I said, you are the one speaking in theorheticals. All I have to do is go back two months to back myself up. What do you have that has actually happened? http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/news/arti...sp&c_id=cle http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?g...mp;mode=gameday
  10. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 10:15 PM) I don't know, but this is baseball. Anything can happen. And I'm sure something similar has happened in the past. You get a bunt base hit, it carries over to the next batter he gets a hit, and a flury of hits come. In fact, Ozzie said in post game, after he saw that hit by Kapler, he was ready to call the bullpen to get Pena warmed. Lets say Kapler got a bunt single and Buehrle gets knocked out of his zone a bit. Then the next batter gets a dork snort or something. Ozzie then calls in Pena, and bam, the Rays offense wakes up. Anything can happen. So I can name many, many times where teams have had 5+ run rallies in the 9th inning without bunting to start it off, but you can't name any that started with a bunt, yet I am supposed to believe there is a significant enough chance of it happening to go against 110 years of baseball tradition. I'd really prefer you get out of the hypothetical, and give me some real evidence before I go discarding baseball's great history.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 08:50 PM) Colon wouldn't be ready in time for Danks next start so that would mean the Sox would have to skip a turn in the rotation. If Torres has already been sent down though, it'll be too late and both him and Poreda will be unavailable. If Danks does go on the 15 day DL, they can recall Torres back if he has officially been sent down. Realistically the Sox wouldn't have made the move until right before the game tomorrow (officially) and just recalled Colon to replace Danks.
  12. Game 163. The AJ drop third strike ALCS game. Sox rally from down 6 or 7 to zero to beat the Cubs Sox getting no hit into the ninth by Dave Steib hit three straight homers then two doubles to make the game interesting. Harold Baines hits a three run walk off homer off of Dan Quisenberry
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 09:57 PM) Agreed. Also, the reason why they were down makes even more sense for a bunt. 5 runs isn't a huge lead that is impossible to come over. Baseball is a funny game and you can get the first 26 out and then struggle to close it down. Being down 5-0, you need baserunners, not home runs. I got a question. If the Rays did bunt with 2 outs in the 9th, and got a hit with it, and then strung together several more hits, and eventually got the lead, would that still be "bush league." No matter what the circumstances are, you never give up and you try everything and anything. Whether it be breaking up the PG, no-no, shutout, or CG, you try and do it. Like you said, your pride is on the line. Baseball is the only game where that game isn't over because of a time limit. In football or basketball your down by 40 points with a minute and a half left in the game, you're f***ed. In baseball, you can be down by 10 heading into the 9th and have all the time you want to make a great comeback. It's unlikely, but there's always a chance in baseball. As Herm Edwards said, you play to win the game. If a bunt helps you make a comeback, you do it. You don't lay down for a PG or no-no. So when is the last time a team generated 5 runs or more in the 9th inning starting with a bunt hit?
  14. Nice to see you back! Always nice to see a familiar face again.
  15. Well there is no doubt that a perfect game on the resume will help a ton. Two things he really needs to do is win at least one Cy Young, and win 20 games at least once.
  16. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 04:43 PM) "I saw Bartolo Colon throw one in AAA as well, but that was about 100 years ago when Bartolo Colon weighed about 170 pounds." LOL! Was Colon 10 years old?
  17. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 04:37 PM) Hey guys... remember when Mark Buehrle pitched a Perfect Game? That was awesome...
  18. First time in first place since May 1st. Also a season high 5 games over .500, while taking three of four from Tampa Bay.
  19. For those who can get it, Comcast is replaying this game tonight at 7pm!
  20. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) My friend Marcus, who's a Cubs fan, just texted me with "Man, I remember 5-6 years ago when I used to think Kerry Wood was better than Mark Buehrle." There is the other great arguement in retrospect, and one of the best ESPN.com screen names (which made it over here).... Buehrle>Wood.
  21. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 04:17 PM) This will be the only time, I imagine, Dewayne Wise will be mentioned on the front page of CNN.com in the lead story. Ever. Unless he goes Jayson Williams in the future, you are probably right.
  22. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:36 PM) 263 no hitters have been thrown, 19 perfect games have been thrown, 18 of which have happened since 1900. Only five times in the history has a player thrown both, one other player has been apart of a perfect game and a combined no-hitter. Cy Young, jim bunning, sandy koufax, randy johnson, mike witt was the one apart of a combined no-hitter There are three teams with multiple perfect games thrown. The yankees have had three pitchers throw a perfect game, don larsen, david wells, and david cone. The indians have had two pitchers throw a perfect game, addie joss, and len barker. The sox have charlie robertson and now mark buehrle. Nice research.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:18 PM) By the way, since it hasn't been said yet... How about those first place Chicago White Sox? Beat you by 6 minutes in the game thread
  24. QUOTE (Brian @ Jul 23, 2009 -> 03:22 PM) Too bad nothing exciting to talk about today. Yeah, it will probably be some minor league highlights or something...
  25. That catch was something special in a game that means nothing. In a game like today, it is a play of the year.
