Films Thread
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 12:12 PM) I disagree. Star Wars came out of nowhere, there was no cartoon 20 years prior to the film that gave people an idea of what the film was about, there was no frame of reference that people could base their opinions. Its hard to say "Lets face it, most of us wouldn't think the original 3 Star Wars films were all that good if we were in our 20s and 30s when we first saw them. " because lets face it, in the 70's there wasnt anything remotely like Star Wars. It was a different time, a completely different era. me and you grew up with Star Wars as commonplace, the people that saw this movie when it came out didnt know what was coming next. I know that looking at the movies now they have a cheesy aspect that can be annoying, but they look like emmy nominees compared to the 3 prequels. They were groundbreaking stuff in their day. Its hard to appreciate what they were, because what we have today has grown up so much, but without Star Wars, we don't have the Sci-Fi movie genre anything like we do today. They are what War of the Worlds was to radio, or the Beatles were to the 60's.

Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) That's what I'll start doing the moment a trade is announced, assuming we get him. BTW I also really question the early reports on these things anyway. Rosenthal says the Jays "wouldn't hesitate" to open bidding to the Yankees and Red Sox. Really? I imagine the priorities go 1) dump Wells in the deal, 2) dump Rios in the deal, 3) NL, 4) anywhere but the AL East where he'll kill us all year. If they include those two teams, the possiblity exists of a Miguel Cabrera type trade where they take on Wells or Rios contract, as well as Halladay. It would be win/win for Toronto.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) You can say the same about Transformers 2. Everyone went to see it. The difference is that Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon. No one will give a s*** about the transformers in six months.

Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:55 AM) Supposedly, a friend who works with the organization and has heard the rumblings around the office says the Blue Jays have demanded Gordon Beckham in any Roy Halladay deal, to which Kenny Williams pretty much gave a middle-finger. This guy's pretty close to the action, so unless the Blue Jays are willing to lower their price, you can forget about it. They can start with Becks, but that isn't going to happen. Unless they come down into Richard/Poreda country, those talks are OVA.

Films Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:27 AM) He was never a very good director to begin with IMO. Lets face it, most of us wouldn't think the original 3 Star Wars films were all that good if we were in our 20s and 30s when we first saw them. He's lucky that a generation of 7-13 years olds that saw them when they first came out have elevated those three films to epic status. That isn't true at all. The entire country was taken in by the Star Wars saga. If it was just 7-13 year olds, it wouldn't have grossed what it did.

Grief over celebrity deaths
The think the one that hit me the hardest wasn't a regular celeb, but when the Challenger blew up. Especially the teacher on the mission had been so personalized to the US, you really felt like she was your teacher. I was in 7th grade at the time, so I wasn't ready for something like that, and had no idea of the risks of space travel. I remember well the emotion of John Lennons murder, but was too young to understand it. I think the biggest one that would hit me would be Paul McCartney, as he, and the Beatles music, have been such a part of my life for my entire life now.

The Democrat Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 08:47 AM) Yeah he gets compared to people like Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh etc. a lot. But which one of those 3 graduated college? O'Reilly is a better comparison. Well to be fair, it was because he played Hannity/LImbaugh of the left for years on the radio...

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 08:28 AM) Right but making the argument of such and such works one place so it must work here is one that comes up way too often. We are not Europe, but they are used all the time for comparison. Denmark, for example, can work a lot of social programs largely because they are a small country with a lot of high earning jobs in a place largely devoid of natural disasters and the top earners pay roughly 60% in tax. A lot of what they can do can not be done here. We're very similar to Europe in some ways, but also so very different in others you (not you) can't just say "well look at so and so, they do it so well" and expect the same situation if applied here. That's all. The 50+% tax rate is a very relevant discussion point that is NEVER used when talking about places like Europe and Canada as well, and a very valid reason for their social programs. I doubt very many here want to see their taxes double/triple/quadruple, just so others can have insurance. Realistically that is the question at hand here. Do we want 50-60% effective tax rates?

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 06:37 AM) The way seems to me to take people out of the ERs for non emergency procedures. I keep reading, at least here where a large percentage of the population is uninsured, wait times in ERs can reach 10 hours or more. How can it not be an advantage to get them out of the ERs and into lower cost, and more appropriate for their ailment, clinics? Once again, to where? Where the heck are all of these empty clinics and doctors offices that I keep hearing about that people are going to flock to?

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 06:11 PM) That's exactly the point of a government plan, scale produces economies. That's why we allow all those mergers, remember? Scale works when you have excess capacity. We in the United States are OVER capacity. I have yet to hear where we are getting all of these new facilities, doctors, nurses, and medications from for the 100 million, or whatever the number is this week, people that aren't covered.

Player Comparison
I can't wait to see how long it takes the Cubs to try to deal Bradley. Anyone could see that was a trainwreck just waiting to happen. Soriano I have faith will have a big second half. He seems to be a late bloomer during the season.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:55 PM) Less than that, because I don't have money to purchase health insurance, let alone defending my existence. And anyway...if the government is so inefficient at everything it does, then health companies have absolutely nothing to worry about from this reform; at worst they'd get extra customers. That's the biggest part of the problem. They'll just pass on the costs of those inefficiencies to the half of the country that actually still pays taxes, meanwhile putting those companies out of business by "lower" costs artificially.

Healthcare reform
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 05:46 PM) The Health Care industry is currently burning through $1.4 million a day on lobbying the federal government. How much money would you be spending if your entire existence was on trial?

Halladay Superthread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 04:08 PM) Not necessarily anyone in particular. I just wouldn't pay that price for Halladay. Hell, if you want him, he'll be a FA in 1.5 years. That's the point. The window could well be closed in a year and a half as pretty much every offensive player over 25 on this team will also be a FA.

Who Is Kenny Trying to Shake Loose?
QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) Why is Flowers untouchable? He's a future DH...he's definately a masher, but he's not graded to be a major league catcher at all... The guy hasn't caught that much in his career. To be honest, no one quite knows what his future is behind the dish. We have to let the kid play and see if he is going to grow into it or not.

Back Online
Just FYI, we are slowly testing things out to see how much of a load the site can handle. We had some features turned off to save load on the old server. Now with a new server and an upgrade we are hoping things are improved to the point where we can break out some of the bells and whistles again. If anyone notices anything funny PLEASE let us know ASAP! Thanks!

Halladay Superthread
I really think an offer giving the Jays two major league ready starting pitchers might be enough to tempt them if we include some potential from the minor league level. I know they want to ditch Wells or Rios, but they need to cut cash in a hurry, and no one will want those player without the Jays kicking in some cash, which they won't do.

Who Is Kenny Trying to Shake Loose?
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 02:20 PM) He'd be a very expensive bench player. Why would he be coming off the bench when he's light years better than Getz? Because I want Getz to develop and see what he can do. We know what Guzman can do.

Who Is Kenny Trying to Shake Loose?
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) What about Christian Guzman? He can play 2B, 3B, and SS, and he can either be a utility guy or our everyday SS and move Alexei to CF. Coming off of the bench, I wouldn't mind.

Porcello v Beckham
Becks is really going to be hurt by not being up here for two months of the season. I don't see him have a chance at winning.
