  1. So what will be Kenny's big trade of this off-season? Who will he bring in here this year for the move that will resonate into next year?
  2. That was just an ass-kicking. The Hawks controlled every single phase of that game last night. They were very impressive. Glad to see Ladd and Buff and nice games.
  3. So out of curiousity, I know that the old story goes that you really can't throw both a curve and a slider. Does anyone know if the cutter is compatable with the slider? Any chance of Poreda picking up the cutter to go with his pitches?
  4. QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 06:11 AM) Ding Ding Ding. I'm not in love with either candidate, but the Republican party needs a wake up call. I think 2010 will be the new 1994. I think economically and environmentally Obama is better for us, right now. And that's pretty much the summation of my opinion: right now. If he fails to unite congress, and therefore the U.S., by trying to pass far left agenda, then he'll lose the cross over votes and Democrats will pay the price in the mid-term elections. McCain failed to show any sense of dynamics during the campaign and I just think rather than moving on, too many people will see his presidency as a continuation (which its not in almost every way). I'm truly a purple republican that believes that life should be preserved at every stage: no abortions and no death penalty, but I'm a realist and I know that people need their coping mechanism. I think reproductive responsibilities should be pressed more and more and while I favor abstinence, I'm in the vast minority in people who actually waited to have sex before marriage. I think making adoptions more accessible, counseling for pregnant mothers, and prevention shoud be major priorities. I'm sick of hearing Christians talk about "moral" issues and yet having not action themselves in the prevention of these problems. It is way too convenient to say the government should step into our lives and tell us what to do, even though on other issues: taxes, guns, religion, we say GET OUT OF OUR BUSINESS! I'm against the concept of a church marrying two people of the same sex, but if your church wants to do that, then great. I've read the bible and I know what it says on the matter, but there's certainly a lot of room under the Gospel for all of us. I will respect your decision, disagree with it, but we can still go out to Dennys and enjoy a big slam. I do believe that the benefits alloted to married couples discriminates against those who aren't a heterosexual couple. That means homosexuals, but that also means my unmarried great aunt mary and her sister. They've lived together for years and love each other and would benefit greatly from a "civil union". Again, I break with the Republicans on the death penalty. I don't believe it fits within the structure of what Christ teaches. Yes, God did punish by death those who were wicked, but do I trust God in his perfection as a judge and jury? completely. Do I trust a proven broken system of average broken people like me? yes and no. Yes I think convictions are 99% just, but no I do not think it in our best interest to kill people. The Gospel of Christ is about redemption and restoration of all things. All things including the murderer. A murderer who gives his life to God and spends the rest of his life in prison may have a greater effect on people in the name of God than i will ever. Yes their crime was abhorable, that is why we send them to prison. Alternatively, I believe we should be charging room and board to anyone in jail. Prison is the only place where you don't have to pay rent, why? I think by charging prisoners for their stay in jail and requiring them to work of their bills would be a great way to prevent individuals who just want to stay there because it's easier than the outside world. I believe the responsibility of paying rent and working on a consistent basis will encourage prisoners to better adapt when released. So all of this goes to show that I'm a weird quasi-conservative: a purple republican. I believe that the private sector gets it right more often than the government, but I know without quality oversight and governance, the corruption through money and power will distort the intended purpose of the organization. I know some of you don't care, but I just thought I'd share. Nah, there is more of us than you think. keep the faith brother
  5. Cool. I was kinda hoping it was someone out there who had done it, because I was curious if it had been updated and how 2008 compared to the last few years. The talks about Tavarez got me thinking about the effect that Pods had on the Standard Deviations of runs scored in 2005, and wondering how much of a difference the same sort of player would make if we kept most of the rest of the team intact.
  6. I seem to remember someone doing or finding a study where they took the 2003-2006 teams and took not the total amount of runs scored, but the standard deviations of runs scored per game. My question is has anyone done another study of those for recent years, and do they have a link to those past numbers? It seems to me that the 2005 team wasn't as prolific as the 03/04 teams in run scoring, but they were way more consistantly in the 3/4/5 runs per game area, instead of having large amounts of 0/1 and 10+ runs scored in a game.
  7. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 01:30 PM) And I get called out by mods but someone just called me a promoter of hatred. Unreal. If its wrong, they can suspend me. I will walk away and take my punishment. On the other hand, if you don't want to be called out, you probably shouldn't keep acting like the very people you have such a big problem with in the Republician party. When you make nasty little racial cracks, it makes you no better than the people you mock. THAT reinforces the hate and divisions between party's and races. That reinforces the bitterness felt by people who think they are going to be taken advantage of by an Obama Presidency.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 01:27 PM) How's that. You a psychic or something? I have watched your posts for the last few months. That tells me just about everything I need to know.
  9. QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:36 AM) They don't like him now. But I seem to remember him being rather popular around these parts in 2004. I also think it's interesting that this election has been a reversal of a lot of 2004. In 2004, there were a lot of Republicans posting in the democrat thread stirring stuff up. In 2008, the opposite is true. People get really annoying when they're winning, and get awful sensitive when they're not. I remember saying at some point I would have considered voting for the Democrats if their ticket had been reversed. Turns out with Edwards that would have been even more scary for me personally.
  10. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 01:22 PM) No. I will not become a Christian conservative. No, but you will go out of your way to promote division and hate.
  11. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 09:19 AM) I've had to live through 8 years of hell so I'm going to enjoy the next 8. So you are going to be exactly like the people you hate. Perfect.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 10:24 AM) right, yes, no one in this forum has ever criticized Obama, there's never been threads specifically saying what we don't like about him, there was never a FISA thread with 100% of the Obama supporters in here pissed. That never happened... And by the way, northside, I respect how difficult it is to be a mod on this forum and I think you are doing a good job and you are a good poster. But you are incredibly one-sided on who you decide to take issue on. It's heavily slated towards talking down the Obama posters on here. When the conservative posters on here do one of their many personally attacking, offensive posts while crying about what a tough time they are having because of those damn obama supporters, your response is always a neutral, hey it's not everyone, i agree with you on x. When an Obama poster does something that never attacks a conservative poster but usually McCain or a conservative figure in a mocking light, ala AHB or in this case BigSwert, you are quick to ask them to stop. With all due respect, NSS is one of the few nuetral people in here. If you are trying to make him into an enemy, you are barking up the wrong tree. If anything he has bent over backwards to let AHB, BS, and many other people in here take all of the rope they could handle. I think you have hurt feelings for being called out on stuff.
  13. Saturday was a nice one to win. They faced 10 powerplays, included something like 5.5 minutes straight at one point, and another PP in overtime, and came out of it winning in a shootout. Huet saw 51 shots, which is insane. The boys are 5-1-3 since the two opening loses.
  14. QUOTE (scenario @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:41 AM) He's huge. Not fat or anything... just a big guy. That's why I took the pictures of him walking next to Armstrong and the handshakes after the game. I wanted to get something that helped show a size comparison. If he makes the team in spring training, he would be the second tallest player on the Sox roster. Picture Jon Garland if he added 30 solid pounds. Sort of like that... Not sure if Poreda played football, but he sure could have. He's a little bigger than Clayton Richard who was a big QB. I haven't seen enough of him to judge his mechanics, but I do like my hardthrowers to have a large/thick base underneath them. I'm not talking about a Bartolo Colon look, but Poreda just looks strong. It gives me a better feeling about potential durability.
  15. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) Seeing that I was posting in the Dem thread I was merely poking fun at the Limbaugh's of the world. Sorry to ruin your day. Watching everyone from this board all of the way up to Barack Obama himself act just like the people they claim to be different from has pretty much ruined my next four years.
  16. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) Because that's the only reason that Colin Powell endorsed Obama according to several right wing pundits. Great, so revel in, and promote ignorance. That will make things better.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) OK, so we blame the actions of various idiots in the media on Obama and the Dems (who have no control over those entities), because they are writing/speaking on their "side" of an issue? That is absurd. And if we want to use that line of logic, then I guess we should also say the same of all the various right wing columnists, writers, radio host, etc. Everything they say is what the GOP wants. Right? That has been posting style for months when it comes to Republicans, right? I probably just shouldn't post back here and leave this for the next couple of days. I have mostly stayed away from it because it has been so ridiculous and counterproductive, but sometimes it becomes so completely one-sided that SOMETHING needs to be said. This election has been by far the worst cycle I have ever seen. Not only has the top of BOTH tickets just been two faced and nasty, but I have never seen the people at the bottoms levels be so nasty and two faced as well. I know I have been sucked into the mud at times, because I have gotten sick of the most inane stuff not getting challenged. It is probably a mistake on my part, but hey. Remember when the big back and forth happened over the Democratic hate thread? THIS is the EXACT type of stuff that got the bitter feelings started towards it. A person can only here their belief system ridiculed so many times before it pisses them off. The complete lack of respect for anything but one's own point of view from Obama and McCain all of the way down to hear has been by far the most gauling thing about this last two years. It has been just downright embarassing.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 03:09 PM) Why is just saying something is "Federalist" still a reasonable counterpoint? I really don't care how federalist the system is, right now the only ones who benefit from our current setup are the people who make money off of registrations and the people who benefit from stopping folks from voting. Because constitutionally a state could have monkey's throw darts at cows to pick who they were going to give their votes to, and it would be more constitutionally sound than stripping the power from that state to decide how it wants to pick who it votes for as a whole. That is the biggest reason I have had a problem with all of the changes to all of the primary and general election processes over the past few years. It is up to the states to decide how they want to deliver their electoral votes, and not the federal government. It is also up to the specific parties under their freedom of speech to decide how they want to pick their candidates. Anything else is the federal government usurping the rights of the people.
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) It is different. If there was a mailer saying hawkish, poor leadership would lead to slavery that was sent to the black population, that would be a similar example. And lol at acting like the title is any different than is being actually said by the mailer. Of course it's different, it always is. How about being told that "they" were going to do everything to "steal" your vote? I don't know, I think people promoting the FEAR of racewars are just as bad as someone promoting the FEAR of racewars. But maybe that is just me.
  20. Obviously this isn't the Auntie Zeituni he knew before... Again, I can't wait until tomorrow is done.
  21. Poreda is a pretty solidly built dude. You don't see many big and strong lefty pitchers.
  22. Remarkably similar to the people running around saying a McCain win would cause a racewar... don't you think? Damn, I will be glad when the election is over and you quit posting this low brow baiting crap.
  23. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Nov 1, 2008 -> 12:39 AM) Middle Class started at below 250k, then 200k, then Biden said its 150k, and now Richardson says its 120k. The number keeps falling. And it keeps dropping. THe kicker will be when they blame the drop on Bush. Just wait, its coming.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) Win? I don't think the Daley name is well respected across the state. Its not really "respected" anywhere. But he will win if he runs.
