The Republican Thread
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Obama calls people who don't want to pay more in taxes 'selfish', and equates voluntarily giving part of his pbj sandwich in 6th grade to forcibly having to pay more taxes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V3FNh3mAuY Yet when had the chance at an equal playing field in the campaign finance area, he punted quickly. Way to practice what you preach Barack.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) Also, I'll throw out a dark horse not mentioned... Lisa Madigan, IL AG and former state senate cohort of Obama's, for US AG. It would clear the way for the other Daley to win the Governor's race. That makes sense.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) I thought Libertarians felt that national defense was one of the few areas of that the federal government does indeed need to be strong. The current libertarian candidate is proposing large cuts in defense. Almost $100 billion a year as a matter of a fact. http://www.ntu.org/main/page.php?PageID=141

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) I think where the liberarians lose a lot of people are their views of the education system. National defense is the reason I could never be a libertarian.

Professors and Office Hours
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 01:03 PM) I provide my phone number as well, along with a warning not to call me after 10 pm. Email solves most things anyway, unless somebody is bringing in a 6-pack of Guinness as a bribe gift for the prof. We got email when I was a freshman, but you had to go to a campus-wide computer lab to check it. My sophomore year we got an internet connection as a campus. Email wasn't used by too many people, let alone profs. I wish it had been, that would have been nice.

Professors and Office Hours
I went to a small school where we had our prof's home phone numbers. It was a nice switch from what I heard lots of people had to deal with.

Another NBA player fails to wrap it up
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 11:22 AM) That's the benefit of playing on a championship team...unless you were a DNP-Coaches Decision all year long, all the other teams think you would be a useful cog on your team...cuz you have a ring, you MUST be good. Still, as was said before...you should be smart enough to wrap that rascal. Maybe he and Shawn Kemp can get together and have a little baby momma confab. Either that or they could make one HELLUVA Maury episode!

Trading Vazquez a "priority"
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) Not surprising, but Cowley is only write a fraction of the time on these sorts of things. That tells me he's apt to just fling s*** at the wall. Some of it will stick. Being a beat writer means walking the fine line between penetrating analysis, and friendly access to the team. I get the impression that Cowley has pissed off a few too many Sox folks, has lost a lot of access, and therefore doesn't hesitate to do this sort of thing. I think he "write"s all of the time

Fields to start in 2009?
Let me immediately call bulls***, and just say that Kenny talks like this all of the time. He always says the guys that are here are "his" guys. Then a month later he goes out and gets the guy he really wants. This is just Kenny being Kenny.

Kenny's Depth chart-->3rd base
So most everyone knows about Kenny Williams infamous three year depth chart of the White Sox line ups. The question is, what do people think third base looks like on there for 2009, 2010, and 2011? Who are the external and internal candidates that are showing up on that list right now?

KW got it right
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 05:07 PM) Because Griffey was battling a knee injury that likely took away some of his power. He was also a great presence in the clubhouse and those years of experience do come in handy. Essentially, he'd be brought in as an insurance policy while hopefully getting 300 PAs off the bench, which would be the best case scenario. If you ask for .260 25 .800, I really don't think you are asking too much of him...the only thing that's necessary is having someone on the bench who can hit LHP, because Griffey's pretty much hopeless against lefties. I'm still not going to rule out Griffey being the starting RFer for the White Sox next season either, though some crazy moves would have to be made for something like that to work out, as in bringing in a good 3B and 2B/SS/CF. I really wouldn't be surprised if something worked out to get Griff into the line up for 300-400 ABs. That knee injury combined with the type of hitter he is (one who generates power with his legs) means he was essentially just hitting with the weakest part of his swing last year, and still hitting a fair amount of balls into the gaps. I wouldn't want him around 7 days a week but about 3/5 of the time would be good for us and him. It would allow him to get plenty of rest so that his body wouldn't breakdown, and it would allow us to exploit some match ups.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 03:04 PM) Steff, what you mean is 100% correct. You expect when you hire a plumber, that the work performed, is by a licensed plumber. However, you do not have to be licensed to employ licensed plumbers. You have to be licensed to "sign off" on the job. Most cities and towns require that. So just like that 19 year old kid a couple years ago who inherited a bar, he could own it, he just could not serve or consume alcohol there. Even better, I was talking yesterday with the owner of a day and night medical clinic I'm trying to help me with my camp. He actually owns three clinics in the area. He is an attorney. No medical training. Zero. Nada. Plus there are different municipal, county, and state regulations depending on exactly where you are. Really both of you are probably right depending on where you are familiar with.

Will Tampa Bay be back next year?
The World Series is now over, and I am curious what other people think. It seems like most every year a "young" team emerges from relative obscurity and makes either a run at the playoffs, or deep into them. Thinking back, in the last 5 years you can point out The Marlins, Tigers, Indians, Rockies and Oakland have all emerged from mediocre expectations to over-achieve. The interesting part is many of them fall flat on their faces the next year. Will the Rays continue or buck this trend?
