Why is Milton Bradley among the BA leaders and ARam is not?
A player must have 3.1 plate appearences per team game played. (AB+BB+HBP) Ramirez is not hitting that mark.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Some tell me ALWAYS. Not here, and I didn't mean to imply that's what you, Kap, or anyone here has said. Your example of individual store pricing is a lot less complex system than world's largest economy. It's easier to study that and see why people are buying less, what alternative goods they are buying instead, if the competitors are getting more, etc. I'm just saying that it seems hard to me to isolate increasing, decreasing, or leaving the taxes the same from what the rest of the economy is doing to determine if it leads to increased or decreased revenues. Then again, like I mentioned to you before, I've never studied economics too in depth so I might just have no idea WTH I'm talking about! Anyone who tells you "always" in economics is full of it. Its not a study of absolutes. If you want something to read and learn a little bit about why people believe tax cuts drive governmental revenues, read up on the multiplier effect. This is pretty dry, but it gives an idea of what the theory is there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplier_effect

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Economics are like any large, complex natural system. It is extremely difficult or even impossible to completely isolate certain cause-effect relationships. One tiny, tiny little change in input values and you can get completely different results. So, while I often hear from conservatives that "cutting taxes always leads to increased tax revenue," I view it with a large dose of skepticism. I don't think anyone has said ALWAYS. There is diminishing marginal returns to take into account, as well as the multiplier effect. But in general, yes it does increase revenues. Its the same reasons that increasing prices leads to less items sold.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) Isn't it really up to her how she handles it once she finds out though? If she wants to stay silent, it's her marriage and her business. When a politician makes their private life a part of their public campaign, it ceases to be their private life. A central part of their campaign WAS their marriage and her cancer. At that point in time, she becomes complicit in a lie, and a central one in his run for the White House. It'd be different if that hadn't have been a central theme for them. To me it would be akin to finding out Frank Thomas was a juicer, after all of those years of b****ing about other people doing it, and leading a campaign against it.

Predict the last 31
QUOTE (RME JICO @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:30 AM) I fear this: Twins 93-69 DIV Red Sox 93-69 WC White Sox 92-70 1GB However, the Twins are starting to show signs of slowing down (lost 3 straight) and they still have a bunch left on a long road trip. If we are about 3 games up after their road trip, we will be in a pretty good spot. For us, the 3 game set at Boston this weekend and the last 3 game set at Minnesota seem to be the make or break series for us. Boston has a ton of injury issues (Beckett, Drew, Lowell, Wakefield), which might allow the WC to come out of the Central. I believe if we get into the playoffs, we have a great shot to make it out of the AL. Our 4-man rotation, 3-4-5 batters, and Closer are hard to beat. We have GOT to get Linebrink back soon, or find ANYONE in the pen who can give us a 6th and/or 7th inning.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 09:31 AM) He seemed to me to be a solid candidate who just came across as a slimeball, and turned me off. To me, compromising your morals for votes is pretty slimeballish. Either he did when he was Gov, or he did while he was running for Pres.

Predict the last 31
Just to clarify, I wasn't saying go game by game, just how the last 31 games would end up. For example, here is what I fear... Twins 93-69 White Sox 92-70 1GB

Predict the last 31
White Sox stand at 75-56 now a game ahead of the Twins at 74-57. My question is this, how do YOU think the season will end? Pick the records and the standings of the two teams.

Your first place Chicago White Sox!
75-56 +1 game over MN

Quentin Article - Good Read
Except I don't think Williams really looked at TCQ as a 4th OFer. I think everyone else made that assumption. Listening to him talk about Quentin, I think Williams saw a damned good RF.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) What exactly didn't you like about Romney? I wasn't active on here back then. He is one of those guys who became "conserative" over night. He was fairly centrist when he was the governor of a liberal NE state, but when he wanted to go national he sold all of that out. I hate that. It was the same problem I had with John Edwards, except he went the other way on the scale. Its too bad, because Mitt't economic and financial credentials are second to none in the field, but his lack of spine is also second only to Edwards.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 09:33 PM) Seriously? I thought his speech was awful. It was full of every conservative's stereotypical/ shallow/ dumb criticisms of liberals. It was so over the top and corny. Then again, maybe that would have won the nomination... I agree with you. He came off like a pouty brat in his concession. Actually it reminds me a lot of Hillary's concession. They both sounded resentful that they had to do it.

2008 General Election Discussion Thread
QUOTE (longshot7 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 05:39 PM) Most Americans favor Universal Health Care - so does Obama. Most Americans want to get out of Iraq asap - so does Obama and McCain Most Americans want Social Security to be fixed - so does Obama and McCain Most Americans want Bin Laden to be caught - so does Obama. Who the hell doesn't??? You can't be serious. Most Americans want a higher tax rate for millionaires - so does Obama. Most Americans want the new energy alternatives explored - so does Obama and McCain Most Americans want some forms of gun control - so does Obama and McCain etc etc etc. Seems pretty Centrist to me. The problem is the Right doesn't want what most Americans want - they want what a select few want. And that's not democracy. There are like two things here that McCain hasn't also talked about. This is one of the most loaded posts I have seen a while. Most Americans want to pay less in taxes- so does McCain Most Americans believe government is too big- so does McCain Most Americans don't want 9-11 to happen again- so does McCain Most Americans want babies not to have their lollipops taken- so does McCain Most Americans want puppies to be safe from kicking- so does McCain Can you now see how easy and meaningless a post like that is?

50 FAVORITE WHITE SOX PLAYERS
QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 05:03 PM) 2-3 years from now, Carlos might deservedly crack the top 3. He is, as steve mentioned earlier, a f***ing beast. If he keeps up the combination of the quiet/reserved approach and the huge numbers, there is no doubt he will be near the top. So far I love the kid, but like I said, I didn't vote for anyone in their first year here.

WINNER WINNER
Richard really pitched with some poise for a rookie who had some really bad defense behind him. It isn't too hard to imagine a scenario where he gets out of the 4th inning with no runs given up, especially if it involves Anderson or even Swisher in CF playing defense. He didn't seem to let it bother him and still gutted it out and pitched through 6 innings. I have no doubt that other guys on this staff wouldn't have made it out of the 4th. BTW congrats to Big Jim for passing Jimmie Foxx, and being only one HR away from 14th and the legendary Mickey Mantle.

Who closes tomorrow?
QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 10:39 PM) I could see Russell getting a shot. That's who is going to be the middle inning guy at the very least. Broadway and Russell are going to have to do some heavy lifting today if Floyd can't get it done.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) Anyone have a McCain VP prediction? Sadly Mitt Romney makes the most sense. He would be the only one of the 4 who has real life economic experience. I am not sure who it will be. Like I said before, I wish he would get Alan Greenspan to run with him.

8/25 Gm. 1 - SOX vs./@ BAL, 5:05 CT, CSN
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 01:56 PM) So Getz at 2B? Most likely Uribe at 2B, Crede at 3B, and save Getz in case the game goes on for multiple innings and we need a PR/PH, or defensive substitute.

Obama Names His VP
QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 01:22 PM) let me re-create a day on soxtalk: ahb2008: I can't believe this RNC would do this this is childish and stupid responder : oh well you do it all the time how are you complaining blah blah Clearly the difference is one is talking about a political party or media organization or political player with huge audiences and scopes, and one writes on a message board. It doesn't say much for the person who is making the posts while critisizing the exact samething. I think that is the point.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 12:18 PM) I don't think Crede's rehab assignment can stretch to Sept. 1. He would probably have to take a roster spot before then. It can be 30 days, correct?
