John Edwards - "Americans should 'sacrifice' SUVs for Env
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 03:03 PM) We put ourselves in Iraq. Events put us into Germany. Events put us into the former Yugoslavia, and that main event was the fear of losing the leadership and de facto primacy that we enjoy in NATO. Our involvement in Germany had nothing to do with the Jews. Our involvement in Yugoslavia had nothing to do with any systemic ethnic cleansing/genocide/repression. Who said that it did?

Garland to Rockies?
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) They're trading Atkins this offseason. I'd be down for Atkins, arms for Jon Garland.

This is not good for Alex Rodriguez
QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 01:28 AM) This Glaus story reminded me of a comment made in papers here in AZ by Jeff Moorad the part owner of the Dbacks "Since our group took over we have secretly traded away several players that we suspected of steriod use" There tenor started at the end of 2004 through the comment made in June of 2006. One of trades was the Glaus trade so it made me wonder who else they "shipped out" in between 9-2004 and 6-2006. Interesting. Good for them if it is true.

So maybe I missed it, but have Michigan and ND ever both started out 0-2 in the same year?

Kosuke Fokudome
The more CFs on the market, the better chance one slips in value and falls to the Sox. Ideally Rowand, the Japanese player, Jones, and Hunter all hit the FA market.

Garland to Rockies?
Colorado would be a perfect match for the Sox, but we need to be talking about their young position players, and not their pitchers.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 12:55 PM) Except we didn't go to help in Germany because of the systemic repression of Jews. It was an afterthought. We could have done much more to stop these things during World War II than we actually did. It's funny that you think that we went to help in Screbernica, we really didn't rush into it. It wasn't until the Kosovo issue that we rushed to help and that was through NATO. US reaction in Yugoslavian break up, like much of Eastern and Central Europe's transformation in the late 1980s and 1990s happened entirely within and had little to do with external pressure. How long did it take us to go into Iraq? It wasn't like we went in the Monday after a Friday night.

The biggest comeback in White Sox history
To be specific, it was the most runs down that the Sox have ever scored to come from behind and won in a game in just the 9th inning.

When Bipartisanship works...
QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 9, 2007 -> 07:48 AM) This does not address the biggest problem facing us. We can find enough immigrants we like to be Doctors, software engineers, and similar, but we just can not find enough acceptable laborers. We should slash this funding and force Americans to accept these jobs Seriously, now comes another round of tuition hikes which will wipe out the increase as far as the students wallets. They will still need the same debt. This will help schools way more than it helps students. We accept debt in this society. The second part is true. Colleges are still going to follow supply and demand and get as much out of the pockets of students as possible. If the government gives more aid, it means that the increases will be bigger to make up for the governments new portion. See also medical costs and insurance costs.

When Bipartisanship works...
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 06:54 PM) But but but this is creeping socialism! Let these people pull themselves up by their bootstraps with their rugged conservative individualism! Horatio Alger didn't need no goshdarn big gub'mint to help him on his way. If they didn't have enough money for college, they must have just been f***ing lazy. How dare Bush tarnish the Reagan legacy by continuing to prop up the Department of Education instead of abolishing it? /ends rabid right wing authoritarian hate. Finally, an increase in Pell grant funding. Now just doing some work to get rid of the insanity of NCLB and things will be even better. Actually I would argue that this is inflationary to the cost of college, but that's OK. I am not going to complain, because it will be a nice boost for us.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 09:10 AM) By true definition of genocide - Less than 70 years ago. Events that come close to it? - Less than 15 years ago. QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 07:11 PM) One could argue that the Serbs were engaging in a genocide in Srebrenica during 1992-1995. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosnian_Genocide or a book "The Problem From Hell" by Samantha Power for more info (a great resource about how the term genocide came to be, examples of genocides throughout history and what the response (or lack thereof often times) was from the US and other nations. Check and check. Both times the US went to help. We invaded Yugoslavia, or what was left of it, Germany, and Italy. Yugoslavia which has a very large Christian population in sectors, not to mention Italy, the home of Catholics and Germany, a Lutheran nation.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) How far back do we have to go? It's a serious question. WWII? Are Christian countries just better? BTW SS, it was a post of yours months ago that pointed that out to me. I believe it was in a Rwanda thread. Funny that you would post that now. let me ask you this, when was the last genocide in a Christian country?

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) Romney: No tax on investment gains (interest, dividends, cap gains) for income levels I don't like Romney much, but I think he has a decent idea here. Are you ready to go into the implications of taxcuts again? I think Tex has been busy enough in the other threads, he might have to give up sleep

QUOTE(maggliopipe @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:52 PM) SI is reporting that Troy Glaus received multiple shipments of performance-enhancing steroids in 2003 and 2004 while with Anaheim. I can't believe Darin would let something like this happen on his watch! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/base...robe/index.html It will be interesting when the first significant White Sox name comes out.

Happy 5th Anniversary to SOXTALK!
August 30, 2002 was the first date that posters were moved onto Soxtalk.com. It is amazing to think that this site went from 128 posters at Soxnet.net to approaching 4000 people, and over 1.5 million posts in that amount of time. You guys are the greatest, and this place is successful not because of the administrators or moderates like some sites think, but because of the people who post here. Thanks to everyone :drink

I also saw seven again the other night, and had forgotten how good the movie was. There was actually suspense to it, which is hard to find anymore.

Broadway/Phillips Called up too
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 11:19 AM) Neither of them is very good and they both are half the pitcher they were advertised as. You know, I was thinking about this recently. Does KW think White Sox fans are stupid? Or are his scouts stupid? Was he lying us or just misinformed about Gavin Floyd being one of the top prospects in the game/being so electric? How about Masset? And it's not necessarily a "personal" thing with Floyd as I definitely think Masset represents it, but I just want to know if we were lied to deliberately or not. We really need a "Tin Foil Hat" Club.

Broadway/Phillips Called up too
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 11:15 AM) At least from what I saw, I think Floyd at least comes up there with better stuff. If Masset was throwing mid 90's as advertised, I'd change that, but they're roughly the same on velocity and Floyd seemed to have much better off speed stuff. Massett also has more problems repeating his delivery at this point. He still walks too many guys. Floyd just throws scared way too often.

Broadway/Phillips Called up too
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) Southsider2k5, they definitely want Sisco to start and he does have an option left so they are going to devote their resources into helping him become the best starter he can. What I heard, which should not be a surprise to anyone on this site who has followed Sisco, is they feel his mechanics can be better handled as a starter. It is probably what they should have done this year, have him start in Charlotte, but hindsight is 20/20. These winter ball assignments were in the Tribune today, and also they are sending Andy Gonzalez somewhere this winter but that is old news. Their immediate concern is Masset. Here is a guy they scouted a great deal and definitely has a good arm but he fell far short of expectations. It happens, but Masset is out of options so time is of the essence. As for Aardsma, plenty of teams will take a chance on him and I believe he will be traded. He is more "fragile" than they'd like. Glad to hear that about Sisco. I was really verbal in hoping that they wouldn't break camp with Andy on the big team and that they would send him to Charlotte as a starter. I know he had been in the bigs a while, but he still has a lot of developing to do. As big as he is, and as funky as that delivery is, he is not going to be a guy who becomes consistant very quickly. He needs innings and reps, plus a pitching coach attached to his hip. I really believe he has the highest ceiling of anyone in our organization, but he might also have the shortest time to get there, and the longest way to go. Heck looking at a guy like Randy Johnson as a guy who had a similar build and arm angle, he didn't make his ML debut until he was 25, Andy Sisco still isn't 25 years old, and he already has two and a half years of ML service time. I think Massett falls into the same category as Sisco. He needs his innings, he needs time to develop.
