New Whitesox Rumor
QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 8, 2005 -> 12:25 PM) While he was undoubtedly one of my favorite players while he was with the Sox, this guy is very streaky. It always seemed as Durham went, so went the Sox. He was a very good player in the late 90's and 2000. Not sure what he has left in him now, especially considering the multiple stints he's had on the DL since going to San Francisco. If we could land him with the Giants eating a major portion of the deal, I'd love to have him back. Definitely an upgrade over Harris. But if we have to pay a lot of the remaining dollars, forget it. Ditto my thoughts. Ray would be perfect for the two hole as a switch hitter and a good handler of the bat. Plus if he still has any wheels left, that could be huge at the top of the line up.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) Hey... I just got an e-mail about Sox Fest, and there's a picture of some Sox wristband they're selling. Would it be possible to for someone to purchase a couple of those for me, and for me to pay you back? I'm big on those wristband type things, and having a Sox one would be kick ass. Thanks. Hey Greaser, if no one has offered to hook you up yet, let me know. I can send you whatever you want. Just shoot me a PM before Friday

Mexican Government aids Illegal Immigration.
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 01:33 PM) Taking away for a moment that they are here illegally. Aliens are much more likely ro be victims of crimes than to commit one. They are also almost never going to report it. In many ways they are ideal neighbors. No noisy parties, no domestic disturbance calls on them, no complaints about the loud World Series party we will be throwing this October. It is a shame we have diverted serious attention here, as if it was somehow going to stop terrorism. The terrorists came in from Canada. BTW, Candians are allowed longer stays and easier access to the US than Mexicans. If we want to tighten up the borders why not start by restricting Canadians entry and VISA requirements like we do Mexicans. Perhaps because most Canadians speak English and are White?? How many million Canadians are here illegally taxing our resources?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 11:54 AM) I'm getting sick & tired of seeing non-topic stuff pop up in talent acquistion threads. You've been reported. If you are going to spar with one another then you should at least include something in your post RELATED to the thread TOPIC! So I guess all of that freedom of speech and MYOB stuff was all one sided rhetoric?

Javier Vasquez to the Sox????
It reads to me like a columnist filling space. The Sox are done this off season except for maybe a low level signing or two. The Sox will not be adding an $11 million player, and they won't be tradeing Paul Konerko, end of story.

Grade the Off-Season
QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 09:48 AM) Pitchers like Randy Johnson don't grow on trees, and to acquire him, the Yankees gave up a lot. But, like I said, what they gave up will more than be returned to them when he helps bring them yet another championship. Hell, he might even help bring them 2, and if he does, all that extra revenue will be used by Steinbrenner to beef up his payroll even more. I predict the Yankees payroll will hit $300M before the Sox hits $100M. Not a bold prediction, really, but a funny one. I'd sure bet on your prediction coming true. The only way that changes is if this squad catches lightning in a bottle goes far in the playoffs, and we get the season ticket base from the 12K range where it is now, up to 20-25K.

Grade the Off-Season
QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 09:42 AM) He didn't say best deal for the money. He said best deal. And what the Yankees will make in extra revenue for their likey World Series win in 2005 will more than pay for that $48M + $9M + scrub prospects. If you want to be nitpicky, Cheat's exact word was best "deal", which inferrs a bargin. The Yankees paid through the nose for Randy Johnson. The Sox got AJP for about 1/25th of the money, let alone the #2 starter, and two big name prospects that got given up.

QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Jan 7, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) Better than the Yankees getting the best pitcher in baseball? :rolly And they are going to pay him a guarenteed $48 million plus $9 million more to AZ, plus Vazquez and 3 other players, including two top prosects. Total cost for the White Sox. $2.25 million.

Phil Rogers Take
The whole thing with Hermanson pitching KW tells me something. KW is maturing as a GM. Does anyone think in 2001 that Kenny would have listened to a newly signed bullpen pitcher for advice on a Catcher? It would have never happened. Kenny is now utilizing his players and coaches and making them active participants in the process of teambuilding, instead of making it seem like it is only him. I am impressed with the progess that Kenny has made in his 4 years at the helm.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 07:06 PM) Wrong again The Cell has only become Coors junior last year after the renovations. It was not Coors junior before then. And Girlie has had much better run support throughout his pitching career then Garcia, and still he has had similar win/loss over the last 4 years Garcia's run support last year in Seattle was just brutal. He was 2-8 despite being top 5 in league in ERA during his Sea stint. It really makes your arguement look juvenile when you refer to players with derogatory nicknames, IMNSHO. When you start with stuff like that, it takes away from any valid arguement you might make.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:58 PM) You know what, I like what Bruce does for ESPN/Comcast, I like his knowledge, but f*** Bruce. You know what, f*** the media too. If this were the reversed situation (Sox/Cubs thing here for a minute) -- and the Cubs were the ones improving their team with all these moves and what-not, and all the Sox had done had made some minor moves -- everyone would be ripping the f*** out of this team. Kenny Williams has a plan, whether or not you agree with that, that's besides the point. He wanted to improve his pitching staff, and make his team more speed/defense oriented, while still keeping some power. He's done that. He's solidified our bullpen with Vizcaino and Hermanson, made our pitching staff the best since '93/'94, he's made this team a bigger threat on the base paths with Podsednik, and he's improved our situation behind the plate with this latest signing. Jim Hendry, on the other hand, has let a career year from Glendon Rusch earn him two million and, the Cubs will rely on him as a starter. He's resigned Nomar and Walker (both solid moves), and he's overpayed for Henry Blanco. Meanwhile, he's failed address the biggest problem of their s***ty bullpen. LaTroy Hawkins, Kyle Farnsworth -- that's all they have down there. Way to go, Kenny. I am usually not into media bashing, but rock on

New A.J. info--Sox have him for at least two years
QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:50 PM) http://www.strikethree.com/03/02/06/dave.shtml Damn I guess I got bad info then... Someone had posted that you could only double your salary at arbitration.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:49 PM) The how can byung-hyun kim go from $762,500 in 2002 to $3,250,000 in 2003? That is a 326% raise. Was that an arbitration decesion or a negotiated contract?

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:40 PM) We weren't contending, we were pretending, like usual. Bottom line is, he gave up on a guy that could really help this club, regardless of what he got in return. If I want to ask him about Reed at Soxfest, so be it. Maybe he will actually admit it was a very tough decision and give an informative answer. Or he may curl up like a cheap tent and give me BS. Regardless, while everyone else gives him endless love, I am going to ask some tough questions. Another one is going to be, Is this your make or break year as GM if we fail to win the division for the fifth straight year? After the White Flag trade, if we are anywhere close in July, this team will be considered contenting, even if it is just for PR reasons. They made the White Flag mistake once, it wasn't about to happen again.

New A.J. info--Sox have him for at least two years
QUOTE(qwerty @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:38 PM) Why is that? Players can get bigger raises in arbitration than the 20% or 25 % i think i have heard you say before. 100% is tops. He is making $2.25 million this year which means he can't make more than $4.5 in arbit if we chose not to negotiate with him.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:35 PM) Not joking at all, I am just going to ask why he gave up Reed and were there other options available than giving up Reed. If he doesn't give a suitable answer, I will further my probing questions. It was either that or Crede. And if you are serious about competing for a division title you can't give up two starters in July. I know Reed is going to be good, but this is a deal that had to be made, and will benefit both teams.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 06:29 PM) Don't worry, I've still got a few things planned, mainly centered around Jeremy Reed. In regards to this signing, I would like to see Davis traded now so that Burke can be kept on the roster to catch Buehrle. I don't even want to think about the contract that Garcia would have gotten on the market this year. 4-5 years at $11-12 mil per year doesn't sound that far out of line for what pitchers were getting paid this off season. We would have been stuck with another cheap pitcher or Grilli/Diaz etc. That gives me the chills just thinking about it.

HOF Poll
They both were the best players at their positions for quite a period of time IMO. Boggs might have been the best pure hitter I have ever seen, except for maybe Gwynn.

Damn that makes this a pretty sweet signing. That means even if he has an awesome year, the most we HAVE to pay him is $4.5 million.

Add me to the happy, happy fan pile. I do think it is hilarious that less than a month ago the huge contingent of people who were positively freaking out beacause the Sox weren't doing anything. And people like me were laughed at for preaching patience. LOL. Now the Sox are essentially set, or maybe one or two finishing touches.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 6, 2005 -> 02:34 PM) Jeez SS, don't open this can of worms. The athlete-salary debate/abomination is for another day. We have to keep things in context, no matter how absurd they may be. Can you tell that I am feeling underpaid lately
