QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 10:40 PM) Both are decent contact hitters that don't hit for power or walk. I'd never have used a Theriot comp for Gilmore, but it's not that far-fetched. What? 2 players who are 3 years apart at the same level in the minors are 'comparable'? Despite the younger guy hitting almost 60 points higher in average? And despite Gilmore having a projectable body type likely to grow into power, where Theriot was never expected to or would with his body type? Please. THIS is a great example of the problem with using advanced stats on players in the low minors. The numbers create the image of a logical argument which makes absolutely no sense.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Aug 2, 2010 -> 10:04 PM) Gilmore. Let's be real; is he anything but a Theriot at best? Ryan Theriot is 5'11", 175 lbs. Was a 3rd round pick of the Cubs. He was 24 years old when he was in high A ball. Where he batted .273 with a .709 OPS Jon Gilmore is 6'3". 195 lbs. Drafted in the 1st round by the Braves. Is 21 years old in high A ball. And is batting .337 with a .794 OPS. In what bizarre parallel universe are these two players remotely similar?

- YouTube video Not sure how many people are familiar with the ProBatter pitching simulator. Several MLB teams use these including the WhiteSox, Yankees, RedSox, Mets, Indians, Reds, and Pirates. They're getting popular at colleges too. Worth checking out if haven't seen one.

Many people are not aware of the huge impact that Scott Linebrink had on Floyd getting his act together. Both have a very strong "faith-based" approach to life. Scott shared his thoughts, etc., with Gavin at a critical time in Floyd's development. And it has played a critical role in Floyd's new found self-confidence and success.

Chances are pretty good that Mauer is out tonight. The Twins said they planned to sit him for a couple of games after a cortisone shot in his shoulder Saturday night. Without him, I like the Rays at home, even with a rookie on the mound.

Great baseball discussion guys. Keep it going. But please don't escalate the personal stuff.

Deferred comp is typically established via a trust. And it's possible that trust has already been funded, leaving only the regular salary left to be paid.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:18 PM) Not to nitpick, but it was a single with an error on the throw home, which allowed him to advance to second. I think the other RBI must have come on a ground out or something. Ahhh... I got the info from an Arizona newspaper. Hometown spin I guess.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:23 PM) Teahen 1-2 with a double and two walks. Charlotte beats Rochester... again. Good to have Twins' prospects get accustomed to losing to our prospects.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 08:08 PM) I don't understand why this matters. I made a case for why I think it should be a certain way, not trying to convince Ozzie or Kenny to do it that way. It was quite obvious that Torres would be pitching on Tuesday when they announced Jackson to pitch on Wednesday yesterday. Just because a decision has been made doesn't mean I can't question why. Sure you can question why. I wouldn't try to deny you that. Your original post said you were confused why this was happening. I was just explaining that Coop requested it. That's why it happened. He has every start for the rest of the year planned out and didn't want to change things around because of the double-header. That might sound like a routine normal thing to do, but I think it's pretty significant. Because it means they're targeting who they want to line up against certain teams late in the year (like the Yankees in late August and the Red Sox in September) ... which is pretty exciting when you think about it.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:06 PM) I would rather have Buehrle or Jackson pitch on 4 days rest vs. Baltimore, than then Torres pitch vs. Detroit. Etc, etc. Coop met with Ozzie. Showed him a schedule he put together for the rest of the year, and said to make it work he wanted someone from the minors to handle the 2nd game this Tuesday. Ozzie said OK. End of story. There was no debate.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 07:34 PM) Sounds like he found out Dayan is going down soon. I heard Ozzie say in his postgame interview that he and Kenny are getting together tomorrow to decide who goes down.

Huddy also hit a 2-run double. Good way to start off for a new team.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) You could have said that every month since late January. True. But nobody gets rid of bats before the all-star game... not quality ones anyway.

Gamethread: White Sox (58-45) vs A's (52-51) 1:05PM WGN/WSCR
scenario replied to Kyyle23's topic in 2010 Season in Review
Gio is prone to giving up the long ball. And it's a warm sunny day game in August. I like the potential of us going off today. -
Of course, all of the roster jockeying, etc., will be postponed if Jackson has a good bullpen today and ends up pitching Tuesday.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 12:22 PM) I had heard on WSCR this morning that Jackson won't pitch until Wednesday, so I'm assuming somebody has to be called up to start one of the twin bill games (although we do have tomorrow off of course). Would it be Harrell again? I don't think it's a question of who's coming up Tuesday. That will be Torres. The question is who comes up when Torres goes back down.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) Yeah I'm sure the lefty PH thing is an excuse the team would use that Kotsay is still here. But we play in the American League so pinch hitters really don't mean anything, and who would Ozzie even PH Kotsay for? This all not even pointing out the fact that Kotsay can't hit, so that kind of kills the idea of having him as a pinch hitter. The lefty PH thing, his defense at 1B, and the fact that he hit .351 in August/September last year will be the excuses. I'm not saying I agree with the decision to keep Kotsay over Viciedo in the short term, I'm just suggesting it's not as illogical as some people are going to try to make it look. But if it does, I'm sure we'll be treated to the traditional barrage of "Worst decision in the history of baseball... Kenny and Ozzie should be fired NOW" posts that take place when unpopular moves are made.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 1, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) I completely disagree with your last sentence. Why send down a guy who is actually helping the team now so that we could keep a guy on the team that is not contributing at all? I don't disagree that he is adding value to the team. Hell, I'd love to keep him in Chicago, but... Let's just play this out for a minute... Carlos Torres is going to get called up to pitch the second game of the double-header on Tuesday. So, what is the corresponding roster move? Dump the only left-handed pinch hitter we have (Kotsay)? Maybe but unlikely Send down the only backup SS/2B we have (Lillibridge)? Unlikely. A relief pitcher like Threets? Possible. We don't have any players who are candidates for coming down with a mysterious injury. Tank may simply be the most movable player in the short term... and a trip to Charlotte might benefit him by giving him more at-bats against right-handed pitching... which could help us out later in the year. I do agree that when Teahen comes up it probably makes more sense for Kotsay to go though. Because Teahen would fill the LH hitter spot... and either Viciedo or Teahen could play 1B.
-
I'm envisioning alot of freaking out when he is sent to Charlotte soon. But... I suggest that it is both inevitable... and a good thing. Inevitable because we will have to play a few roster games due to scheduling, who's going to start in doubleheaders, bringing back Teahen, etc. A good thing because he should not be sitting on the bench waiting for an occasional at-bat. Get him regular playing time so he can help us later in the season. We know we've got a good asset in Dayan. Sending him down is not a demotion. It may simply be necessary and the right thing to do.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 10:45 PM) They're beating up on crap right now, just like we are. That's the schedule. But... they have 4 games on the road next week against Tampa.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 31, 2010 -> 10:32 PM) What about my Bill Madlock comparison? I thought I'd be roasted over the coals or praised universally on here by now for that observation. Bill Madlock had one of the best combinations of batting eye + contact skills of any player I've ever seen. He was virtually impossible to strike out. Drove pitchers crazy. It would be great if Viciedo ever develops that level of skill with pitch recognition and contact. But unlikely. That's asking alot. However... Viciedo hits the ball much harder than Madlock did.

Maybe Teahen was sending Kotsay a message by burning his bats?

Athletics (Braden 5-7, 3.77) @ White Sox (Danks 11-7, 3.23)

FWIW, Teahen went 3 for 4 tonight, had 2 RBIs, and scored the winning run for Charlotte in the bottom of the 9th. -
Teahen went 3 for 4 and scored the winning run on a walkoff double by Flowers.
