  1. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 11:12 AM) Is Robin Ventura the manager? So it is beyond the realm of possibility that Rios missed a sign or was running on his own. The fact is, it is far more likely than Robin having him steal.
  2. A team with this record of draft picks and people around here want the Sox to go on a total rebuild. LMAO.
  3. QUOTE (joeynach @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:18 AM) Even when Dunn is normal he would be the last person you would roll a hit and run with. Does RV now know he is one the league highest Swing and miss % guys, one of the league's highest amount of strikeouts along with lowest contact rate. Did RV not realize Dunn revitalized the three true outcome player discussion on a national stage thanks to fan graphs, walk, K, or HR. So if all that is set in stone reality, why on earth would you put on a hit and run with two strikes and 1 out, and with the leagues best catcher back there. If Dunn does make contact it goes over the fence, if he doesn't its an easy double play b/c he swings and misses a ton. Where is the recognition of these types of things by RV? It's clear Robin knows far less about managing a MLB than about 95% of this board. I find it quite ironic that you are calling Ventura clueless and on the other hand saying he called for a hit and run in that situation. Konerko wasn't running at first. I would imagine Rios missed a sign or was running on his own.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 10:12 AM) It's possible to evaluate a manager whether the team is good, bad, or somewhere in the middle. Yesterday's Rios steal is a great example. That isn't on Dunn for sucking. Are you sure he called for Rios to steal?
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 09:19 AM) Especially because no one can actually document where this has happened in a short period of time. We are talking about the better part of a decade here, in all likelihood. If people aren't going now, they sure as hell aren't going when we are starting a team that should be in Birmingham. They are going back to the White Sox of 1990, but that was also luck. They wanted Mike Harkey but the Cubs took him so they settled for McDowell, they wanted Jeff Jackson but the Phillies took him so they took Thomas, the Cubs had needed a 3rd baseman for years, but passed on Ventura so the Sox landed him, and then they got Fernandez who was drafted previously by Milwaukee but didn't sign. A couple of those things go the other way, and the new park could have been as empty as the new Marlins stadium.
  6. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Apr 22, 2013 -> 09:39 AM) You can debate about how to do a rebuild all you want, the point is that you have to get a winning ballclub out there. If that results in a few down years, but you have a plan in place that will work, you do it. Simply trying to tread water and be afraid to do something that in your office you believe will result in winning a world series is the wrong approach. There are plenty of Cubs fans not going to games right now, which is fine, when the Cubs are competing they'll all be back and they'll make up for that revenue anyway. There are plenty of Sox fans who already aren't going, and it will just continue to decline each time they miss the playoffs. The fans they "lose for good" will be back once they are in the playoffs or world series, we all know that. Or they are a first place team that for whatever reason, the fans believe in and can finish the job. Since when was it necessary the Cubs field a winning club? To think the formula for the Cubs and White Sox is the same is crazy.
  7. The White Sox are not going to have a total rebuild anytime soon, and considering how they have judged HS and college talent lately, it's a pretty good thing. It's not like they have the next Frank Thomas or Paul Konerko, or Robin Ventura or Magglio Ordonez in the pipeline. It is amazing to me some people think a total rebuild can happen in a few years. If everything went perfectly perhaps. But things don't go perfectly most of the time. The whiners would actually have something to whine about for years. At least this board isn't as bad as WSI who moan about fireworks being too quiet, stripes on pants, ushers not smiling at them, scoreboards being too small...They are playing poorly right now, but they will get better, and it's not like they are 10 games out.
  8. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 07:04 PM) If they lose 90 games this year and keep the same cast of characters next year do you really foresee ticket sales remaining the same? Instead about worrying about them trading guys for middle of the road at best prospects, if you are into rbuilding, you should hope they have all of their ducks in a row for the draft. Soxtalk had a lot of wishes to come true....AJ is gone, Beckham isn't playing, and your biggest wish Viciedo is out. It hasn't translated to more runs and better results thus far. And if they did lose 90, there is about as much chance they come back with the same team as there is Ozzie coming back. Zero.
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 05:38 PM) Do the posters on this board want the Sox to win a World Series or maximize profit? Frankly, there are more than a couple people here who would far rather b**** about the White Sox than watch them win a World Series. As Frank Thomas would say, no doubt about it.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 05:29 PM) They still made money that year. If it is all about the profit, then why wouldn't the team risk less and have a small payroll and do this rebuild for the people who can't take 2 weeks of bad baseball without walking to the ledge. Minimum 4 or 5 years of bad baseball will do nothing but make these people moan some more. The whining on this board has been taken to a new level.
  11. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 11:48 AM) I do not get Wise around at all with Danks up. I don't get the Danks call up, nor how great people on this board apparently thinks he is. Wise is currently a better major league player.
  12. QUOTE (Lillian @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 06:51 AM) Hey, if he'd consider coming out of retirement, I'd take him over Dunn, as well. I don't even care if he is right handed. And while you're at it, see if you can locate Dan Johnson, and give him a call too. Geeez!!!! Put anyone in there but that "strike out machine". For you old timers, I'd even take an Eddie Gaedel clone, at this point. Or maybe Minnie Minoso would like a crack at playing in his 6TH decade. And no, this is not in teal. I've just had enough of Adam Dunn. Actually, I really feel sorry for him. It must be awful to be going through this again. If 2011 hadn't happened, he could just rationalize that it was nothing more than a slump, but you have to wonder what he's thinking now. Very seriously though, none of you baseball geniuses have yet to comment on my suggestion that Dunn try moving away from the plate. That would force pitchers to stop throwing inside to him, as those pitches would clearly be called balls. It would allow Dunn to start hitting the strikes away, to the giant hole on the left side of the field. It would reduce his home run production but it might eventually cause the opposition to stop using the shift. The other advantage is that Dunn would have more time to see the pitch, while waiting for it to get deep enough to take to left. That would most certainly help his miserable pitch recognition, at this point. Sadder is the top prospects are all struggling. Mitchell back to AA. I think his days as a prospect are nearing an end, and Hawkins with 31 strikeouts in 48 AB. He is a long way from Chicago.
  13. QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 20, 2013 -> 09:52 PM) Keppinger has been horrible since I learned he was a former Royal. I hate posts like that, just because I don't believe the moves the Sox make in July will help the Sox future very much. Konerko for who?? Peavy for who?? DeAza for who? I mean, seriously. Are we going to reap a haul of team's "CAN'T MISS" prospects like Wil Myers for any of these guys? I mean the true difference makers? If somebody gives us 4 minor leaguers for Paulie or Peavy and 2 of the 4 are can't miss starters, I guess that's good. Will Hahn be able to get that, though? I wonder. I agree. The only guy the Sox could trade for impact prospects is Sale.
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 21, 2013 -> 09:00 AM) When Hahn feels the Sox need a game manager he'll bump Ventura up to player development and re-hire Guillen. . I will bet every dime I have and every dime I ever make the rest of my life, this will never happen.
  15. QUOTE (flavum @ Apr 19, 2013 -> 11:52 AM) If the Sox went 9-1 on that trip, do they do this? I was just outside in the Loop. There were flurries and a howling wind. Good decision.
  16. If there are RISP, the shift against Dunn isn't so pronounced. A guy on second could just walk into 3rd if that was the case, and they have to keep runners on 3rd at least a little honest.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 18, 2013 -> 10:54 AM) It depends on what point of the game they were at. Also, the best time to do it would be against a lefty. He can't hit against them anyways, so if he can lay down a bunt or two against them, he becomes just a bit more dangerous. Even if Dunn or any other power hitter became a bunt threat, I don't think it would affect defenses all that much. It's not like the 3B is going to play up anyway. Depending on the situation, the shift against Dunn already is modified. The ironic thing about talking about shifts, Dunn has more ABs than anyone else where only a pitcher and catcher are required.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 18, 2013 -> 09:29 AM) The thing is, if he does it just once in a while, teams can't use the extreme shift anymore, and he gets back some of that lost territory. Personally, if I was the opposing manager, the only way Dunn is really going to hurt me is by hitting a homer. If he wants to bunt down the 3rd base line, that's fine by me. It wouldn't make me take away any shift. It's not like Rickey Henderson will then be on first. He's been awful, but still on pace for 20 homers. If 2011 never happened, no one, except for a game thread poster, would even consider he could be this bad for an entire season. He'll be better than he has been.
  19. Big one for Flowers. Before that he was 0 for 9 with 6 k with RISP.
  20. It is raining which means my DirectTv won't work.
  21. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) Konerko at DH again. Is he dealing with an injury or is Dunn are main 1B now? I think he has a slight back issue.
  22. Dunn has about $30 million worth of rope remaining, but he'll probably wind up with very similar numbers to last year.
  23. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 01:33 PM) You don't say. What's with the personal attacks?
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 12:22 PM) Your mantra last year was why change anything they're in first place. That didn't work out too well. I don't have a problem with change if it's improving the team. I think Danks isn't very good, but I won't get bent out of shape over it. I'm just amazed by his popularity.
  25. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) This tells me that Anthropolous is a "grass is greener" guy (an upgrade in talent is an upgrade in talent, any way you slice it) while most GMs are "maintain a relationship" guys (even if a guy is marginally more talented, maintaining the relationship we've built with a player is more important). I know which philosophy works in games, but which philosophy appears to work in real life? I think they said last night of his 22 claims, 8 are still with the organization.
