QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:53 PM) Kottaras has an OBP 200 points higher than his batting average. He walks in 1/4 of his PAs. I wonder how much of that had to do with the fact that he hit in front of the pitcher. Ed Herrmann led the AL in 1972 in intentional walks. That was a year before the DH, even with an MVP on the roster. He batted 8th. It most assuredly is because he hit in front of the pitcher.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) They need a RH reliever as badly as they needed another starter. Crain is just not a guy who can pitch two days in a row and be effective. It puts a ton of strain on the rest of the righties and as we know Jones is useless. Throw away Jones' worst 3 outings covering 1 1/3 innings and his ERA is 1.56 his other 40 1/3 with a K an inning. Totally useless.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 01:54 PM) So, someone has to be sent down to make room if Olmedo comes up. Septimo I assume? Maybe santiago I think they can get away with not adding Liriano to the roster at least for today.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 01:50 PM) I think it's spelled "Ray", but either way, a terrible 31-year-old IF who hasn't been in the majors since....2006 maybe? Defensive replacement who can't make a major league roster, still has a career OPS better than Escobar. He's basically what Escobar is and will be 8 years from now.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:34 AM) He's been sitting on the bench. And he's done a great job coming in ready to hit and hitting the ball hard and not just giving ABs away like Lillibridge did forever. In regular playing time he's going to be solid IMO. He certainly seems like a Gardenhire type of player all the way. No matter how much Liriano has struggled, Terry Ryan isn't going to trade that kind of ability to his biggest rival unless he gets something he likes in return. Since it is impossible for anyone with two eyes to like Pedro Hernandez, it's pretty clear Escobar was the key to this trade. And nobody gives two s***s what Keith Law the desk jockey and his little buddies think about Escobar's future, the trade itself should pretty much show you that the Twins scouts like Escobar, and those are the only people who matter. If all Ryan could have gotten was salary absorption and a bench player out of the deal in a hot pitching market then he certainly could have found a taker outside of the AL Central. This whole idea that all KW is doing is trading bags of balls is ridiculous. Most prospects don't work out, but for example, Zach Stewart was the key to the Scott Rolen deal, and then a key in a deal for Edwin Jackson which itself was key for the Colby Rasmus trade to go through, and then after that he's the key to the Youkilis deal. You have a former highly ranked prospect who had been drafted as a 3rd rounder and had been scouted and then traded for as a key piece by 3 other Major League organizations, all for very good players, but then Human Dunce Cap Lawrence Holmes gets on the radio and blabbers nonsense about how terrible he is and everyone laughs. Same with Escobar. No, actually Escobar is a nice little player and this deal is yet another in a long line that shows the value of defensive SS that teams believe can/will hit enough to stick. The Twins scouts haven't been right very much recently. This was a salary dump and Escobar was the tallest midget they were offered. He strikes out more than 1 in 4 AB. Hits .159 against RHP with a .190 slugging pct. He's a back up at best, and the Twins, a last place team playing for nothing, are sending him to AAA. Please stop with the dramatics. He's an easily replaceable piece.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 10:38 AM) Not only that, what do the Tigers have left of value that they can trade and acquire what they need? If you're willing to take on money, and the Tigers always seem to be, you can get something for little player value.

I think the Floyd stuff was when KW was trying to get Greinke. I think the plan was to upgrade Floyd with Greinke, and they still could have added Liriano. Now that Greinke is off the market, unless he can upgrade with Felix, I don't see where Floyd goes anywhere.
-
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) Trading Floyd defeats the main purpose of getting Liriano which is the much needed resting of Sale/Peavy/Quintana. All might have issues with stamina and as we saw last start with Sale possibly a dead arm period as they adjust to career highs in innings pitched or many innings pitched after an injury with Peavy. Remember we have plans for the post season which means those guys will have to pitch even more. Exactly.

A lot of people hated the Sox bench. Tyler Flowers is the last man standing from opening day.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:46 PM) Sox and Twins trade? wow First time in almost 26 years, when Hawk was the GM. Its all good. Mercy.
-
KW acquired more guys for the major league roster in the last month and a half than he did all winter.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:33 PM) Forget it. The Sox are done. I'd put it at about 99% probability you are correct. If anything else, something very minor like a back up infielder.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:28 PM) Not sure how to take this trade. Liriano could be gone at the end of the season. Escobar was hitting more than Hudson. Hopefully it stabilizes our rotation Escobar isn't a big loss. His defense at the end of games will be missed when a PR is used for Paulie. Hudson will have to spell Youk, that's pretty scary, and I have no idea who the back up SS is. Maybe its Morel.
-
QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:24 PM) I wonder if, AJ ever catched for Liriano, when they were on the Giants The were part of the same trade. They were never teammates.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:22 PM) The 30th ranked farm system strikes again. You don't trade players much anymore. You trade contracts. If you can eat some money, and the Sox didn't eat a lot, but some, you can get a good deal.
-
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:16 PM) well like they said, good for eduardo though , he'll get a lot of playing time there as apposed to here He did get sent to AAA.
-
QUOTE (Noonskadoodle @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) Looking at the Tigers boards & Indians boards they seem to be brushing this trade off & saying it wasnt an upgrade at all. They must not know about the magic Don Cooper has worked in the past. Not to mention in his last 60 innings hasn't Liriano struck out about 70? His stuff is still there. Perhaps the biggest thing it does, even if Liriano is average, is gets Sale some rest.
-
The trade, however, was tough for the teary-eyed Escobar, 23, who was consoled by Orlando Hudson and A.J. Pierzynski after the game. Miguel Olivo cried when he was traded to Seattle.

QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 11:05 PM) at this point you better get something ridiculous if you give up Gavin...can't see it right now. You're putting an awful lot of pressure/depending on Humber. And you DO NOT send Quintana to the bullpen...PERIOD. If Danks was a sure thing coming back by September 1, I could easily see Floyd being gone. But that's not the case. I wonder what you could get for Floyd. The problem is if you trade him, you may need another starter by September.
-
The Sox so far have given up Lillibridge, who was given up by Boston, Stewart, Escobar and minor league fodder. So really KW has traded away as close to nothing as you can get. The only thing is Escobar is a decent defender, a high energy guy, really liked in the clubhouse. His intanigibles may be missed, but he had 3 RBI. The Sox do need someone to back up at SS. No to Hudson there.
-
QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 10:54 PM) As odd as it sounds, I would much rather have Liriano over Greinke. If the price was the same, no way. If Humber can be decent, and I was going to start a Phillip Humber is the most worthless pitcher in baseball thread tonight, after seeing what happened after similar threads for Viciedo, Konerko and Beckham have worked in the past, the Sox can go to a 6 man rotation for a while and/or give Sale and Quintana a start off. They needed anther starter. Hopefully Liriano can get the job done. He definitely has the ability, and he's pitching for a contract.
-
CSN announced the trade just after they showed the Who's Hot/Who's Not segment. Liriano was on the who's not list.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 10:36 PM) Here's another roster scenario to consider... they start 6 AND have 7 in the pen. Bench of only three: Flowers C and 1B, Hudson skill IF positions, Danks all OF. Not likely, but possible, at least short term. They have to have someone who can play SS.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 08:19 PM) Oh lord. First time I've had Hawk on in a while. This new home run call is terrible. Back to mute you go. IT'S ALL GOOD
