  1. Did anyone see the new technology they are going to be breaking out soon? Every park will have it next year supposedly. It will have the velocity of the hit ball, the speed of the runners on base, the speed of the fielders, and the routes the fielders take to the ball and the path the runners use to run the bases.
  2. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:59 PM) doesn't mean mauer won't find himself at 1b with Tex DH though Texiera DHing is a waste. He's legit GG-quality.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:57 PM) Don't see JR and KW investing $125-150 million into Joe Mauer when the Yankees will throw it at him to replace Posado or whoever is catching there in 2010. Konerko would be gone, Mauer is a good citizen. JR stepped up for Albert Belle. Weakening his big rival and picking up a future HOFer in his prime, that money could be a bargain. Not saying there's much of a chance, but if they were willing to bust the budget on Hunter, Mauer is a no brainer. Chances are though the Twins arent' going to let him go, and if they did, they would trade him first and not to the White Sox.
  4. If Mauer becomes a free agent after next year, the White Sox should offer everything including the kitchen sink for him. Let Flowers play first or DH.
  5. By Mark Gonzales MINNEAPOLIS - Bartolo Colon's five-inning outing Thursday night for Triple-A Charlotte was more encouraging than his April 23 outing against Baltimore, according to a major league source who witnessed both outings. "He definitely threw more breaking pitches and change-ups," the source told the Tribune Friday after Colon pitched five innings of one-run ball against Triple-A Norfolk. "You could notice he was throwing more sliders and wasn't afraid to throw them to left-handers as well as right-handers." The source was unaware that the Sox wanted Colon to throw more breaking pitches. Colon was tagged for five runs on eight hits and two walks without striking out a batter in a loss at Baltimore on April 23. "He was throwing in the 88-to-90 (mph) range," the source added. "It looked like when he wanted to throw harder, he did. He was throwing more four-seam fastballs. I could tell because he was trying to raise the hitters' eye level." Colon threw 40 of 65 pitches for strikes. He is scheduled to pitch seven innings Tuesday night for Class-A Kannapolis at Savannah. He remains in contention to pitch July 24 against Detroit. The Sox haven't decided how they will align their rotation for the start of the second half, but Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras remain contenders to start the first two games against Baltimore. The Sox also requested waivers on left-handed reliever Jimmy Gobble for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Considering the velocity difference most White Sox pitchers seem to have between what they are reportedly throwing in the minors and what the board at USCF says, 84 last night seems accurate. However, he hadn't pitched in a while and was throwing 88 before and would have been fine as a 5th starter if he mixed in a few breaking pitches.
  6. Its a shame Paulie can't run at all, or we'd be looking at the tying run at the plate with no outs.
  7. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:37 PM) I am so glad the Dome is gone after 2009 ..........Yankees just beat the dogs*** out of MINN 7-0 in 2009 and Sox are just what the Twins needed to get back on track f***!!!!!!! I really think its the White Sox attitude about the dome. They go up there looking for things to go wrong. Sure its a different game in that place, but the White Sox dominate that team in Chicago.
  8. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:36 PM) I'm calling bulls*** with the tentativeness thing. He got squeezed mightily against Span, and then he didn't give in to two of the best hitters in baseball on a 3-2 count. Kubel always destroys the Sox, so that's nothing new. I think it's pretty pathetic by Hawk to go nuts on Danks like this and call him out. He threw 3-2 cutters that missed by more than a little. He wasn't his aggressive self.
  9. QUOTE (Nokona @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:34 PM) I genuinely think the strike zone against the first batter rattled Danksy. I'm sure its happened, but I wonder if its ever happened to a guy who has had the success Danks has had.
  10. Keep it at 4 and things can still work out. I don't understand Danks' tentative-ness. He dominated this team last October.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 10, 2009 -> 07:26 PM) Hawk and Stone sure seem to be ripping on Danks mental mind set so far tonight. Its the typical White Sox Metrodome performance. Disgusting really. I think the team should meet with a Sports shrink before they go back at the end of the month.
  12. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:39 PM) I like the way Poreda seems to be adjusting to his role in the pen. I see him as a reliever anyway so I'd prefer to keep him there. Poreda = good in the pen right now Richard = bad in the rotation right now If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Poreda is fine where he is, and is doing much better there than Richard was, so fix the area where the hole is without opening up another one somewhere else. This makes sense. For all anyone knows, Poreda may struggle just as much or more than Richard if he were in the rotation, then you have 2 problems. Richard, Colon, Garcia in a month or so, or get someone else. Leave Poreda where he's having success.
  13. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:27 PM) Good series and over the last 10 games have gained 2 games on Tigers and Minny. I just want somebody from the org to come out and say something along the lines of "f the Twins and their ballpark, we've come in here scared before, no more." Instead it will be more of the same I'm afraid from Ozzie and Hawk I agree. While showing respect to an opponent is nice, the White Sox kick the Twins ass in Chicago. There is no reason they shouldn't at least be able to hang with them in Minnesota. I think they have arrived at the ballpark defeated the past couple of years especially. The first time something goes the Twins way, the game is over. Its time to take that back.
  14. Colon has only given up 1 hit through 4 innings tonight although he hasn't struck anyone out. Maybe he can do the job. He had his moments earlier this year.
  15. QUOTE (brendol @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 07:19 PM) Every time Clayton starts, our bullpen gets worked... we need to change the 5th starter. If Poreda starts the bullpen will get worked as well. Also, at this time, I think you might be shocked at what the opposition will be able to do against Poreda the second time through the line-up. His breaking stuff is average at best, the other night he was throwing mostly 92, hit 94 twice, and 90 several times. He's not the savior. He can be a big help in the bullpen . As a starter, I think if he's going to be much of one, its going to be at least 2010.
  16. Colon 3 ip 1 h 0 r 0 k so far. I'd like to see a few strikeouts, but considering he hasn't pitched for a while the results look decent. Hopefully he's throwing more than 88 and has an off speed pitch to go with it. Now its 4 ip with 1 hit. Didn't Contreras do the same thing in Charlotte. Maybe lightning can strike twice. Nah.
  17. If Colon has a breaking ball, he's the obvious choice. He did have a few pretty good starts before he went down. Freddy if he's ever ready, won't be for a while. If Poreda and Richard for Peavy would have happened and Peavy didn't get hurt, KW might have had to do some time. Poreda starting I don't think is a good idea right now.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 10:05 PM) Back in the day, when it was about as expensive to go to a game as a movie, I got mad at the Sox poor attendance. Now I can understand why anybody would chose to not go to a game. A family of four with good seats? Wanting to enjoy the experience with food, cokes, beers, hats for the kids, etc? And parking? My god you could easily drop 300 bills or more. I don't know how fans can go to 15-20 games a year and afford it unless they do the nosebleed and buy no food. Where the Sox really lose are when companies cancel their tickets. First off they usually have 4 or more, then they give them to customers or employees. Some mom or dad gets them for their family and they are there for nothing so they are already ahead, that means tons of concessions and souveniers for all his little ones.
  19. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 09:54 PM) Our fans have truly not appreciated the attitude of "win at all costs" Considering what this thread is based on, to say the Sox have had the attitude you have described is wrong. Its never been win at all costs, in fact, I think White Sox fans have taken budgets into account more than any other fanbase I know the past several years when discussing trades and possible signings. On this board no one ever suggests the White Sox raise payroll $50 million. People have some crazy ideas but usually they make the money pretty even in trades and the like. I can tell you as a season ticketholder, the White Sox for the most part this season, have been a pretty boring team to watch. For the first time since John Kruk, I'm really not all that excited attending games this year until I made the trip to Milwaukee. The Sox have played in bad weather. They were playing brutally at home. The weather was crap. Its never been win at all costs, you know that.
  20. QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 04:37 PM) How long b4 he starts crying the old, you can't spend a dollar when you only have 50 cents??? That's what the fans were saying during that Dodgers series.
  21. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 06:22 PM) I lost all respect for mlbtraderumors.com once Tim Dierkes posted that it's against the rules to syndicate their content. All of their content is syndicated. hypocrit This rumor was in the Baltimore Sun yesterday. They said they talked to the Sox about Pie in a deal for Fields but they aren't sure if the Sox had any interest. Pie is better than Owens and Wise in the long run.
  22. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) I would do this trade for a few reasons. Josh Fields will be nothing more than a backup infielder on the Sox. Pie has a lot of great tools. He kind of has that Brian Anderson syndrom however when it comes to hitting. If he could figure out how to hit down in triple-a, he would be much more valuable via a trade to another team than Josh Fields would. I'm okay with Pie for Fields. I agree that Fields is going to have a tough time finding a place to play unless another infielder gets moved. Maybe he's next at 1B after Paulie, but that's a couple of years away. You aren't going to use him as a defensive replacement. With Pie, if he had an option left, I'd do it in a heartbeat, but he doesn't so I'm not so sure. Something might click with the guy and he could be a nice ballplayer, but he probably just be fodder. I think I'd trade Fields but hold off for something better or someone who might not have as high of ceiling as Pie, but who can be sent down and will most likely perform just as well. Pie hit .362 in AAA as a 22 year old. He's had some impressive minor league numbers but his 350 AB in the major leagues have been pretty forgetable.
  23. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 02:18 AM) I always have and always will love Paul Konerko. The man is responsible for the most excitement moment in my life as a sports fan, and he relived it today. I have NEVER bashed Paulie on this board and I never will. He is and will always be my second all time fave WS player (after Frank). You mean this Anytime anyone wants to boo Paulie or say he sucks, they should watch that. They will take it back. He amazingly heard boos at USCF in 2008 and some people thought they were justified. Wow. There is no doubt he'll be the last guy wearing 14 for the White Sox.
  24. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 8, 2009 -> 12:51 AM) This thread is ridiculous. Here is what Kenny said: "We expected a little more fan support than we have gotten. It's a reflection of the economy. And I don't know if we've played consistent enough or been exciting enough for people to get behind us yet." So first he states attendance is down because of the economy, which is a true statement. Then he points out that the team has had it's share of struggles and implies that less fans have showed up for that reason, which is also true. Where does he does he call Sox fans cheap? I don't see the insult. Oh yeah and he said this: "We had been a little aggressive in our projections initially, and we might have to take a lot closer look at it because the Dodgers series certainly was an eye-opener for us." Now he admits they overestimated demand and/or priced tickets too highly. He admits the Dodgers series was an "eye-opener" for his staff, which it should have been. I'm not going to argue that raising ticket prices 11% and cutting payroll by $20 million makes a lot of sense. They obviously had their reasons for it, whether wrong or right. However, no one should fault Kenny or the White Sox for admitting they can't spend big dollars on a trade when revenues from attendance have been so low. The Sox are probably already several million in the red. It's unfair and borderline crazy to expect they to go even further in that direction without seeing some sort increase in fan support first. The product until recently hasn't warranted more support. Its the catch 22 that seems to apply to the White Sox every year. The bottom line is the White Sox know and have known exactly how many tickets they have sold. They can also project pretty well what kind of walk-up to expect. How is it that they had plenty of money to assume the $63 million Jake Peavy was owed 2 months ago, but now have don't have the money to pick up anything but spare parts? Its either a smokescreen, some sort of gamesmanship or delusional.
