I honestly think McCann would be the odd man out. They gave Grandal the biggest contract in team history, so his catching opportunities will be limited, and if the team sign EE, are they really going to have McCann DH vs lefties? They probably could get a fairly interesting reliever for him or include him in a package for an even better one.

Since they apparently weren’t in for Cole or Strasburg, and missed on Wheeler, they pretty much had to hit on one of these guys or things could have become a bit hairy moving on, Keuchel eventually being a huge bargain or a rather large overpay isn’t going to make or break the rebuild, They need him to just be decent. He got what they gave Abreu. Next year the FA crop of starters is thin. A guy like Bauer who claims he only wants one year contracts might be had, but the rest are guys with issues. What the Sox need is two of their young guys to become top of the rotation guys. Giolito seems to be well on his way. Cease, Kopech, Lopez...one of those guys needs to be what many dreamed they would be. If all of them do, great, but at least one really good guy and one serviceable, they should be OK. Guys like Rodon and Dunning obviously are in there too,although I would image Rodon is a short term employee. Hopefully they are totally committed to spending money and making this team as good as it can be. The better you make the team the fewer times players will turn down your money to play closer to the fiancés family.

Why wouldn’t an umpire be for computerized balls and strikes? It makes their job a lot easier.

This is a guy who advanced stats really gives no justice. He doesn’t give up a lot of runs. I will take a3.75 ERA from him and let others argue why guys with ERAs over a run more are way more valuable. 3 years in this market, with his agent, is good. He will have to earn year 4.

The trade is great for the White Sox because Gray doesn’t make much and has a lot of upside and Desmond would be great in a platoon, but on the other hand, saying it would be great for the Rockies to be out of this $25 million over 2 years for a negative WAR player, so great, Jon Gray is a reasonable price. Jon Gray type players don’t get traded for salary relief. The end.

That is still only $40 million. Gray has averaged way more than $20 million of worth per season the last 4 years. it would never happen.

They wouldn’t. He was a 2.9 WAR pitcher last year, Steamer projects 3.5 in 2020. You shouldn’t factor in Desmond’s negative WAR. It is irrelevant. If they released him his WAR becomes the same as mine or yours, 0.0. If Gray puts up his Steamer number the next 2 years, that is 7 WAR, well worth eating $25 million. Maybe you can site some examples of teams giving up players of Gray’s caliber to eat $25 million over 2 years, but I doubt it.

Yes. They could trade Gray for a package of prospects that would more than cover Desmond’s deal. It doesn’t make sense to give up Jon Gray for Desmond’s contract. There are many more options that actually increase the teams talent level. While the contract is horrid there is only $25 million to go. Gray is worth way more than that.

I couldn't see the Rockies even giving this a thought. It would be like if Jose Abreu actually played as bad as Ron thinks in 2020, and next winter the Sox gave Giolito to any team that took Joses contract.

Why does Gonzalez not get a better contract? Obviously he isn't a top of the rotation guy anymore but similar pitchers seem to get more. Is it because of his age and size? Francisco Lindor's worst season is a 4.0 WAR. To put Tim Anderson anywhere close to him is hilarious. If you are going to base TA's surplus value vs. his best season, shouldn't you do the same with Lindor, and his 7.6? What is the surplus value then? That said, the tweet was BS and it makes no sense to trade for him unless you can lock him up for a long time. Come in second when he becomes a free agent.

Maybe Hector Santiago is next. I get it, it's a minor league signing to perhaps fill the Charlotte staff, but can't they find something more interesting. You aren't going to want this guy on the mound in Chicago, he hasn't put up a 1 WAR since Kevin Youkilis was playing 3rd for the White Sox and you know most of the Charlotte staff seems to appear at least briefly in Chicago at some point. I get most guys that get what he gets are brutal. But maybe one of them has a shot to be better. He doesn't.

Being too risk averse, makes your team win averse. Yes, giving him 4 years is probably crazy. But so is giving Wheeler 5 years and $125 million, and this guy was the better pitcher. If you are going to sign someone near the top of the free agent class, you aren't going to get a bargain. If the Sox need some sort of obvious "value" on every signing, their signings will be guys closer to the bottom than the top.

Dallas Keuchel is now too old for the White Sox to sign. He was drafted 8 months after the team’s last playoff appearance. The team still has the same 3 dopes making the decisions.

I am a White Sox fan. The better they play the more I enjoy the game. I could watch Oakland vs. Seattle game but I wouldn’t be too invested. I will admit when they suck a few of the barbs out of the stands make me laugh, but for the most part, going to@game James Shields starts and having it basically over in the first or second inning isn’t very entertaining to me.
