  1. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 01:08 PM) I said it elsewhere, but Gonzalez is the only guy worth anything. He should fit in a contending teams back end of the rotation. Also helps take innings (even though he won't really factor much into the post-season (given I would be shocked if he was a top 4 starter on any contender). That said, provides rest / inning relief and also those few starts he makes (over a hole for a #5 can help get someone a wild card, etc). Don't expect a lot for him, but could be someone who fits into the 25-30 range in our system (might not be though...his injury and struggles when he tried to battle through it likely impacted his value). Holland / Pelfrey are way worse and don't deserve to be in the same sentence as Gonzalez. Yeah, I don't get anyone expecting Holland to be traded. His last 10 starts have been every bit as bad as James Shields' starts with the White Sox. If the White Sox were actually trying to win, he would have been waived by now. Gonzalez has been good since he came back, and if you could guarantee that the rest of the season, he might get you something interesting, but he does have streaks where he is awful, and he has been hurt and bad at times this year, so I don't think he nets you anything to be even moderately excited about and the Sox would have to eat money. As long as they are paying for him anyways, the offer has to at least be worth more than the innings he would eat.
  2. I read something about if you took all of Trump's past tweets about why Obama was a horrible president, and held those same things up to him, he, by his own definition, is a horrible president.
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:29 PM) That early September series vs. Detroit was one of the most sobering ones I had been to. First place team with Detroit on their heels and coming to town, you could hear a pin drop most of the game. That is, when the Tigers fans weren't making noise. They ran out of gas. Sale was on empty. Youk's back could take no more. It was fun while it lasted.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 12:15 PM) WGN TV News‏Verified account @WGNNews 13m13 minutes ago WGN EXCLUSIVE: Steve Bartman to receive 2016 Chicago @Cubs World Series Championship ring That's pretty nice of them.
  5. It's pretty funny the same fan base that stayed away in 2012 because they "knew" the team would collapse in the end, is the same one claiming this trade cost them a division in 1997.
  6. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:13 AM) That area is coming along nicely and is on the up. It's also close by downtown, at the Chicago River, a short walk to Grant Park, hotels are nearby, lou malnatis, 4 cta trains will take you there, theaters close by, etc. The Roosevelt/Clark/River site has been sold and is going to be developed into offices and residences. The Sox aren't moving there. In retrospect, it would have been pretty nice, as other things would have been developed around there, but it had to be a football/baseball stadium. If it was built, the complaints would be even louder.
  7. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 11:15 AM) Anyone think if multiple rotation spots open that Jordan Stephens has a shot to be called up ? He is 24 and last year pitched 141 innings but only 60 so far this year but has been pretty damn good at AA. I know it's a long shot due to many factors . Capra loved that guy when he was working the minor leagues.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:49 AM) <!--quoteo(post=3547996:date=Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:42 AM:name=Dick Allen)-->QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 10:42 AM) <!--quotec-->Think of it this way, if the White Sox were in contention, and they traded for Miguel Gonzalez, or Derek Holland or Mike Pelfrey or Tyler Clippard and gave up anything better than Courtney Hawkins, how pissed would you be? And how much would you question the White Sox braintrust sanity thinking these were guys that could get them over the top? That's a bench position player vs. a pitcher who has to pitch. Very different. And they weren't relying on Blum to make them better to make the playoffs. His .506 OPS with the White Sox could tell you that.

  10. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:40 AM) If a starter is moved lopez is for sure coming up. If 2 starters are moved then maybe giolito. Its getting to be the time for some of the starting pitching prospects to get their feet when now or September call ups cause the sox only have rodon and shields in the rotation next year. I could see the sox siging a veteran on low deal but you got the specs and time to see what they can do The big problem other than I wonder how much you want to expose very young pitchers to very little chance of winning, is innings. I don't think the White Sox want these guys pitching regular rotation turns until October 1. Just remember 2007 when they shut John Danks down early.
  11. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:21 AM) Beyond the ChiSox bar there is really not much in the way of hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. around the stadium to attract fans. The stadium itself is not bad per se, but your only choices are really 1) Tailgating 2) ChiSox pub 3) Turtle's bar/cork and kerry South of the stadium is not doing it any favors either. Yet all the proposals aren't exactly bar dominated areas. White Sox fans have used it as an excuse. Cork and Kerry and Turtle's are too far. 2 blocks away, even though most of the bars at Wrigley are even farther. Then a bar is built right at the park, and they don't use it. Color me not surprised. If a park has to be surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of restaurants and bars, the White Sox really will just have to fold as there really is no place any state or city will build them a stadium in an area that meets that criteria.
  12. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 10:25 PM) Nooooo, we had a GM during that time, a fella as I mentioned earlier named Ron Schueler. Should think I wouldn't have to remind your prescient mind about him, Dick, but apparently I do, and I already did in a post prior to this knee-jerk rant against me, but whatever. Do us all a favor and put the "evil Thad Bosley comments" that you are now railing against to rest by presenting Ron Schueler's statements in 1997 about what "wasn't available and for what cost" at that deadline that caused the team's course of action then. You're the guy saying everything Reinsdorf or Schueler did was stupid, like you know better and are far smarter. Yet you HAVE NO ANSWERS. Besides having a problem with JR in which you really do need some professional help, you also are a phony. If your so smart, tell us who they obviously passed on that would have made up the 6 games quite easily.
  13. QUOTE (SonofaRoache @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:49 AM) Why- Because fans wont show up to the Rate unless the Sox are a consistent playoff contender, which they haven't been since the 1910's. What- The Cell does not provide a spot where fans can come early to the game and go home late. There is nothing to do outside of watching baseball. Not hotels, bars, stores, tourist attractions, etc within the scope of the park. There also isn't much foot traffic around the Park unless there is a Sox game going on. Where- Roosevelt was a proposed location and that would be great. There are always people walking around that area and it could turn into a Sox community so to speak. People can spend their day or night in the area and close by. Families from the burbs or out of town can be tourisy or even stay at a hotel nearby if they have a little too much fun. Who will pay- The same folks who always do sadly. But if they make that move I would turn the stadium into an entertainment center for all types of events. Exactly what was/is around that Roosevelt location that would bring people in early and have them stay late? The Target? That is just another White Sox fan excuse. The ChiSox bar and grill has half priced apps after every game. After every game it is empty.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:50 AM) You gotta count on your scouts to find those low-A gems that could potentially be available. Guys with flaws you think can be fixed. I don't think anyone is expecting big returns for any of the remaining guys. Just something. Something is better than nothing at all for a guy you're losing in 2 months. Yeah, I get that. But what the Sox have to offer at this point gets you a huge longshot at best, and if they are now as stacked in the minors as many believe, it will be a player that probably isn't going to get much of an opportunity. They will be in the back of a very long line. The White Sox minor league system is turning the exact opposite of their major league team. Not much of an opportunity unless you have a decent resume.
  15. The bottom line is unless they decide to trade Abreu or maybe Avi, the prospects coming back won't be very interesting. Gonzalez is a 5th starter really on a good team, if that. If Holland had signed with a contender and not the White Sox, he would have been released by now. Pelfrey will get you nothing. He was already available for free to all the teams. After a slow start, Hahn has gotten rid of just about everything he wanted to get rid of that would net them at least something that had a chance.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:16 AM) When the lease ends, this stadium will be nearly 40 years old. We may not see it, but guarantee that there will be some parts of the structure inside showing their age by then. What level of "fall apart" are we talking about? Another thing most don't see is how much maintenance is done on the park. Anyone who has gone to past Grinder Bashes has seen during White Sox road trips, entire sections of seats gone, redoing concrete in several sections. Sure there will be some wear and tear, but they have kept on top of it for the most part. Something they didn't do for years at the old park which lasted over 80 seasons. So that shouldn't be much of a problem.
  17. Pelfrey gets paid by Detroit, so he's making minimum. Someone might take him, but it won't be for anything worth talking about. And someone has to pitch.
  18. I'm pretty sure at this point the only players who make more than Holland on the White Sox are Shields and Abreu.
  19. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 07:52 AM) Last day of non waiver deals, do you think any of these guys go? Maybe Gonzalez. I don't know why any contender would want the other 2 or would think they couldn't clear waivers. A contender happily dumped Clippard. Holland has been just as bad as James Shields was last season his last 10 starts or so.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 08:14 PM) I really wonder if Illinois will risk losing the Sox over a stadium? They have nothing to worry about. First, they almost already lost them. It took a lot of arm twisting,, but if MLB hasn't fled Oakland or Tampa yet, they aren't going to flee Chicago with a better stadium, and more revenue. I don't know why this is even discussed. The White Sox make money.
  21. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 06:31 PM) Will be interesting to see what decision is made in the next decade about a future stadium. Could be a very good opportunity to relocate? They won't get any help from the city or state. I think they are where they are long term.
  22. QUOTE (WBWSF @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 05:37 PM) 1) This is the 27th season the White Sox have played in the present stadium. I find it interesting that fans are still complaining about attendance and the stadium location. If JR had done it right when the new stadium was built we wouldn't be complaining about the attendance and stadium. All he had to do was build a nice stadium in a good location, which he didn't do. 2) For what it's worth I think the next White Sox stadium will be built by the United Center when the present lease runs out. The stadium is fine. It is actually better now than they day it opened.i have a coffee table book filled with pictures of Comiskey Park during the 1977 season. You wouldn't believe what a dump that place was then. But that park, same location, is beloved, even by me. But the truth is, it has been upgraded.
  23. This is a serious question. With all the multiple prospects acquired in trades, and the draft picks, especially if in the next 2 years they draft a guy who can play relatively quickly, are the White Sox looking at a 40 man roster crunch in a couple of years?
  24. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Jul 30, 2017 -> 04:57 PM) Greg: Thank you. It took a lot of time to research, look through old video clips and so on. It was one of those stories that when I got into it, I really wanted to do it well and accurately. I loved how you glossed over Howry and Foulke contributions and glossed right over the 2000 division title, they contributed mightily.in order to b**** about a division they weren't going to win anyway. Look at Alvarez's performance in SF. He had a bad rest of the season. Also of note, the next season after you wrote this claiming the league had "caught up " to Foulke, he had a great year and led the league in saves. And although you mentioned the Jaime Navarro disaster, you overlooked the trade of Navarro for Eldred and Valentin.
  25. Nice game. At least the past 2 have been competive. Even if last night was close to 4 hours.
