QUOTE (Alexeihyeess @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 06:24 PM) Anyone hoping the Sox do this again next year is out of their minds. Presently, they are the worst team in baseball by a pretty large margin. They aren't going to add front line free agents. Some prospects will get the call. Some guys will probably improve, but 2018 is going to be painful from a won loss perspective. They will draft high again.

QUOTE (TheFutureIsNear @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 05:33 PM) Its convenient that 2, maybe 3, of these guys will be full time players for the Sox by the time we are actually ready to compete. The team was mismanaged for nearly a decade and there was no going back. Just have to accept that the team had to get worse before they get better. It's a part of sports in this day and age. Yes but learning how to win is important. When you supposedly have the top one or two farm system and each of your 3 most advanced teams are at least 20 games below .500, and your major league team ready to lose over 100 games, learning how to win may be a tough one.

8-6 Gamethread: White @ Red
Dick Allen replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in 2017 Season in Review
The one thing Pelfrey used to be good at was keeping the ball in the park. Not anymore. -
Maybe one or 2 of these guys work out. If not, it still costs next to nothing.

I have been watching this team for a long time, probably longer than most here, I can't remember them ever being this bad, and I have seen them really bad. I just hope it doesn't spill over and hurt development. You can see being defeated before the game even starts has started to seep in. I just hope the guys the Sox are hoping to eventually keep, can avoid it and get their work in, and get where they need to be.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 09:56 AM) Why are you quibbling ? His 2nd halves he does better than the 1st half . That's the point and part of growing pains as a pitcher. I don't care if he was pitching poorly or injured the 1st halves. Late July August and September have been his best months . Didn't know I had to be so careful choosing my words for someone to take umbrage with a phrase like same old same old Because he did it last year you make it seem like a long term thing. His rookie year his ERA was 0.10 lower the second half, big deal. Last year, yes. This year, his first half was a lost cause. Now is like his first half actually pitching. Same ol, same old doesn't apply.

Sox score 3 and the hardest hit ball was the ground out to the pitcher. -
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 6, 2017 -> 09:10 AM) This is just same old, same old for Rodon. He pitched lights out in the 2nd half for each of the last 2 season. Now if he could but 2 good halves together we have an ace. This isn't a knock against him. It is often how young pitching develops. Usually takes a few years . Just a cautionary tale to not expect the studs in the minors to come up and be instant stars. Injuries and inconsistency always rear their ugly heads. Last year he got better in the second half. His first year he was slightly better in the second half than the first, but a rookie, that could be expected. This year, he spent the first half rehabbing. It isn't the same old same old.

He has only driven in 1 less run than Tyler Saladino.

QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:41 PM) You have no idea what I would do, everything is relative, back in 1993 I gave up quite a few years in pension time and took an early retirement so I could move to Florida and never put up with another winter in Chiago. Yes, but you probably planned your retirement with that amount. I am sure Shields has some sophisticated financial planners and such that have already worked the $23 million into his retirement. He might not ever need it, but you never know. Walking away from $23 million is something g not many would do.
-
QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:28 PM) I know it's hard to walk away from the $$$ but I go back to pride and greed. This guy has already made millions, how much better is he going to live if he hangs around until his contract is over. I would take my lumps for $23 million.
-
QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:14 PM) As Dirty Harry said; "a man has to know his limitations". Maybe, but I think you are trying to say he should retire. If Shields was 30-0 with an ERA below 1.00, I doubt the Padres or the White Sox would say, you know what, you are outperforming the contract, lets rip it up, and pay you more. So why should he walk away from the money guaranteed to him just because either Father Time and or injury have taken their toll?
-
QUOTE (The Mighty Mite @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:11 PM) I have no respect for Shields, no pride. He stealing a paycheck and should be ashamed of himself. He brings a whole new meaning to the word "greed". The only answer is to eat the rest of his contract. He is trying. He just doesn't have the stuff anymore.
-
QUOTE (Insp @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:04 PM) If Smith had any discipline, the count would be 3-1 right now, instead he wildly swing at 2 pitches that were clearly outside the zone. If he had all this discipline, he wouldn't be 29 years old with less than 200 career plate appearances.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 06:52 PM) Absolutely. Fans should be counting their blessings he's here to pretty much guarantee a loss every start. I agree. He helped the Sox draft with his pitching last year, and this. And since he rarely lasts very long, he kills the bullpen for more losses when he is watching from the dugout. He should be a hero to those that want the Sox to lose for draft picks.
-
QUOTE (StrykerSox @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 06:01 PM) I'm really not a big contracts guy, but how does he have four years left? Debuting in 2015, shouldn't his six years be up after 2020? He didn't get credit for a full service year in 2015, so it won't be until his 7th season he reaches the magical 6 year requirement.
-
He has fanned at least 10 seven times in his career, and 5 of his last 9 starts. His ascent to ace is happening. What will be interesting is what their plans are for him. 4 years of control after this year. Next year is a throw away, a lot will have to go right for 2019 to be close to the same. Do they trade him for prospects?
-
Friday is also Shields' turn. Maybe they go to a 6 man rotation or move a starter to the bullpen. Or maybe James is pitching his last game in a White Sox uniform tonight.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 11:31 AM) The Sox have played the last 81 games at 27-54. 4-21 the last 25.

Moncada/Willy Garcia leave game after collision
Dick Allen replied to Jose Abreu's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It's a good thing it was a head Moncada's knee collided with. It gave a little. If it was a wall, it could have been a gigantic problem. I hope Garcia doesn't have a concussion. That was brutal. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:22 PM) It's one practice ptatc, c'mon. And usually I would give the benefit of the doubt for an organization. Not the Chargers who've had a LONG history with questionable decision making on their players. We're talking about practice.
