  1. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ May 1, 2017 -> 03:13 PM) I absolutely think Pace had more information than I do, which is why I said: "If people were offering fair value for the Bears pick, I would have traded down and taken the 2 1sts, 2 2nds, plus." Thats just personal opinion though. After reading Ptatc's comment above, I think the deal more had to do with what time Pace thought he had left. If he thinks he has at most a 2 year leash, he cant stockpile picks for next year because hell be gone by the time they produce. I don't know if trading the picks was right or wrong. We will find out later. Obviously SF just as desperate for a QB thought accumulation was key. Maybe Pace thought he was farther along. If they could somehow stay reasonably healthy, plus they did sign a lot of free agents, maybe he felt he didn't need 10 more players. Maybe this was their best chance at a game changing QB. We will know in a couple of years. We might not know until Pace is somewhere else. It is surprising how slammed he's getting, not by fans, but by even the so called "experts". It was an overpay, but not that much of one, he got many of the same picks back moving down several places in round 2, and one of the guys slamming him had Trubisky going #1 in his final mock. If it was me, I would have gone the accumulation route, picked up one of the lesser thought of QBs later, and thought about a top of the line QB next draft. But you have to admire his stones. He's all in with Trubisky.
  2. The Bears knew what they could get for the #3 pick, so they should have had some idea what it would cost for #2. Unless you really think Ryan Pace is a total idiot, he had more information than anyone on this, and he paid what he had to pay to secure Trubisky.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2017 -> 02:25 PM) This. Absolutely 100% true. The one thing in the back of my head is the Bears being at #3 had to have heard from almost all of the same teams at 3, as SF did at 2. Maybe it was those calls that convinced the Bears that someone really wanted the QB. I can't imagine they would just make it up out of no where. Especially because it seemed the Bears picking a QB surprised everyone. The Bears made it seem like they wanted to move down, so they knew who exactly was looking to move up to draft the QB. People might not have liked the pick, or the amount Pace paid to move up. But thinking they were bidding against themselves and no one was looking to move up is ignoring a lot. No one thought the Bears would draft a QB, therefore, they knew just about every team that was looking to move up to draft one.
  4. Of course there were other teams. The Bears were getting the same calls. It's amazing people think the Bears would be fielding calls about moving up, saying no, and these wouldn't even bother with the 49ers, or that Pace is so dumb, no one was calling him to move up but he thought everyone was calling SF. If you want to make a big deal about moving up 1 spot isn't a big deal, you can't have it both ways. If teams were interested in moving up to 3, they probably were interested in moving up to 2.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:52 AM) It all depends on who/what you believe. Rapaport was just on the Score and said there was absolutely another team pushing the 49ers for their pick, King says the Bears got played. According to the value chart, the Bears didnt overpay, and it was on par with what the Eagles gave up for Wentz(who threw 9 more college passes than Trubisky), but some people think the value chart is more of a guide and not really a bible. Everyone has said it, Trubisky is Pace's horse, we just have to see if he was worth it. I tend to believe there were other teams interested. The Bears had to be fielding calls about their pick.
  6. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:48 AM) Right by Schaller's pump and the park over there. Anywhere. Shinnocks. Cork and Kerry. Just stop in for a beer or some food and ask them for a parking pass. You then are golden.
  7. If you know what you are doing, you can park on the street for free.
  8. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:23 AM) Definitely a side effect of his relative inexperience in the sport. Something I fully expect to improve. I have no problem the broadcaster defers to the ex player for baseball questions. I don't think Jason will ever be comfortable with the why or hows baseball-wise on his own if he has an ex player color man, and that's fine.
  9. Harry Caray didn't know where he was at the last 10 years of his career, yet he wasn't hated. I would say as far as eyesight and actually seeing what was happening, Chip Caray was a better broadcaster than his grandfather, but that's not all that is involved. I would have much rahter listened to Harry. You are watching the game, if they get the name wrong or the ball is somewhere the broadcaster can't see, if you can complain about it, you really didn't need someone to tell you where it was. I will take all the you can put it on the boards and he gones I can get. I know time is running out. I went to Yankee Stadium many years ago, and Bob Sheppard was the almost 100 year old PA voice of Yankees Stadium. He had Jose Valentin batting 3 times in a row. Who cares, it was cool to hear him. I like Jason(he also has eyesight issues BTW) . His time is coming. But Hawk has more than earned the right to finish on his terms.
  10. QUOTE (Sox-35th @ May 1, 2017 -> 11:05 AM) Agreed. Fans deserve better than "Well, he's old so we're keeping him around even though he's out of touch and the game has left him behind". He's not out of touch with the game. Steve Stone sounds like Hawk's parrot when he is with Jason.
  11. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ May 1, 2017 -> 10:56 AM) Then. Go. Home. Nobody is forcing him to call games. He's a selfish old man, that's basically the takeaway from your post, which I guess was trying to defend him. No, he wants the 8 decades. There aren't a lot of people who would rather be at their job than someplace else. Maybe even you would rather be someplace else when you are at work. I guess in your world, that makes you selfish. He appreciates his job, but maybe his mind isn't as into it. He knows he can't sell this team as a contender, especially to himself. But he wants to hang on. I think the broadcast is fine. I know you disagree, and b**** about his eyesight, yet say nothing when Jason acts like a guy just hit a 450 home run that falls about 80 feet short of the wall. For me, when I watch a game, I can see what's going on. Every little mistake doesn't bother me, but then again, I don't have a problem with people because of their age.
  12. He doesn't have time to golf. He sits in the White House making great deals. We will all be sick of winning pretty soon.
  13. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ May 1, 2017 -> 10:14 AM) I actually like all of the picks. They didn't have enough of them though which happens when you trade up for a QB. They did sign 3 UDFA's that could make the team though. I don't understand the national narrative that says Pace will get fired though. He had a great draft last year. Taking the QB this high buys him more time. Pace absolutely gets a 2nd head coach while in Chicago. If Trubisky is terrible, Pace will end up getting fired but we are like 3-4 years from that IMO. The QB could buy him time, while dooming Fox. But if they are 3-13 again, and the division 2 guys don't look like pieces moving forward, he's in a lot of trouble. The roster is becoming almost all his. They have to show some major improvement, even though they can still do that and suck.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) Literally was about to say that. Yes, I think his passion is starting to wane. He knows the Sox aren't going to win anything, and he's gone from dying in the booth to working half the games, to maybe being an ambassador. Being home with his family seems to have grown in importance to him. IMO, watching the White Sox doesn't have the appeal it used to have to him. He would rather watch his grandson play little league than Avi Garcia chase down a flyball. Plus he probably realizes father time is catching up. If it weren't for this 8 decades thing, which is an accomplishment, I bet he would be done right now. He's even said when players ask him for his opinion on their swing, etc. , he passes now.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) I don't like how they invited Glennon to their official draft party though if they knew Trubisky was such a possibility. Yeah, that was not a good look. But Glennon is the still the starter, and who knows, he may ultimately still be the best QB on the roster.
  16. QUOTE (bmags @ May 1, 2017 -> 09:13 AM) You know, all that says to me is the majority of the beating the Bears are taking is over signing Glennon. I hate Glennon because I think he'll just be Ryan Mallet or Matt Flynn pt infinity, but part of this is the NFL constantly being shocked at what quarterbacks make. At the very least, it allows the Bears not to rush Trubisky. They weren't going to win anything anyway in 2017. Free agency was quantity not quality. They are playing for 2018, and probably at least one of Pace/Fox won't be there, maybe both.
  17. Something interesting, Jacob May, I agree, has no business being on a major league roster, but has anyone checked out Trayce Thompson? After an 0-8 with 3 ks with the Dodgers, he is 1-43 with 19 ks in AAA. Looks like the Sox sold high there.
  18. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 1, 2017 -> 08:22 AM) Drafts grades a day after the draft are pointless. That being said, that Bears draft looks awful. He pretty much gambled on every pick. He could get lucky with Trubisky, but I don't think Pace knows what he is doing. It does look awful, for sure, but then you realize you are comparing it to Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. If the Bears picked the best player available on their board, it would be considered a great draft. They both know a lot more about these guys than I do, and know a lot more about them then most, but if they were can't miss gurus, they wouldn't be working for ESPN. Still, when you are drafting 3, and only take 2 guys really the majority of people ever have seen play, it is going to be dissappointing. Pace has his neck on the line. You have to like the boldness, even if you don't agree with the trades or the picks. He isn't just risking his job with this draft, he is risking his future as an executive. If it truly is as bad as many think, he's done. He's a scout at best. If he has a QB that the Bears can ride to multiple playoffs, a division 2 Gronk, a Darren Sproles Jr., and a safety whose leg has healed and was a steal in round 4, you will have to give him the benefit of any doubt for a long while. He'll be the new Theo.
  19. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 1, 2017 -> 08:25 AM) Agreed 100%. He just took a bad step on the base. Exactly. I've seen people injure themselves just walking down the street. It's too bad. I hope he can fully recover. Some do, some don't. Obviously knee surgery has come a long way the last 20 years, but you never know. Some guys continue to have problems. We do know he will work his ass off to get back to normal.
  20. Pete Rose ran out everything, including walks and he didn't get hurt. It's a fluke. To think you are a greater injury chance playing hard than not is silly. He has run out thousands of these. He went down on one. It could happen to a guy jogging to first base as well. Don't hustle, take games off. It's the new way. I wonder how the players who didn't take games off and hustled all the time ever made it. The weird part is it almost is the exact opposite pitching. The speed gun and k-rate are almost all that matters. Max effort almost every pitch.
  21. He gets excited, people complain. He tones it down, people complain.
  22. We know he is capable of being good, he has just gotten back to some bad habits, one handed plays, throwing off one foot when it isn't necessary...he will put in the time to correct it. This is what young players, u less they are superstars do. Eventually, they all struggle, and his defense was so much better than advertised, he may have either slacked a bit with it, or wanted everything to always look spectacular He has been overall awful defensively, but has made many spectacular plays. IMO, he just needs to get back to basics, and not try to do too much. Make simple plays look simple.
  23. QUOTE (bmags @ Apr 29, 2017 -> 10:14 AM) My guess is Jennings will regress and it will be kinda painful since he is our only lefty. He has been pretty solid for a long time but you are probably right. He is going to run out of gas at some point. And for some perspective, Jennings peripherals have been pretty much the same his entire career, and Miami got Andre Rienzo for him. I wouldn't think his value is any better now.
