QUOTE (soxfan85 @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) He expects to beat everybody, and he eats a lot of Kale. He also poses naked for ESPN. If I were a professional baseball player and faced him on the mound, I wouldn't be able to help but laugh at him. I just have a feeling that he is going to make a quick dive back to earth, or that he is hurt...just a hunch. He is still 12-3 2.33 ERA.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 08:42 AM) Every team in the division has suffered more significant injuries than the White Sox and managed to cover for them. Some teams have lost four All-Stars to the DL. http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2...OWGP/story.html Btw, you'll enjoy this article. Although it does cite one prime example of another managerial change that worked (of course, Robin Ventura isn't "hated" like John McNamara by anyone). Sox are dumb every other team is smart. I get the narrative. If you go back to spring training, no one on this site thought they needed another reliever. Not even you.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 08:33 AM) The argument is that they shouldn't have relied on Albers as their ONLY solution for the 6th/7th inning RH set-up guy. There's no reason they couldn't have brought in ONE more veteran...especially as Petricka was very shaky last year, compared to 2014. Jones has worked out as well as expected, and Jennings/Duke. But those 4-5 spots have been a nightmare for Ventura since Albers went south. Webb was never a realistic solution as someone to be counted on. Didn't need five, but they had the money to sign at least one more as insurance (LaRoche's money was freed) and they didn't take advantage. They didn't. Petricka and Putnam got hurt. They tried Kahnle.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 08:21 AM) The Tigers invested a lot of money this offseason into their pen, which has been a chronic problem. The results have been mixed, at best, but better recently. The Indians and Royals have also invested more into developing their pens and bringing in veteran reinforcements (like Dan Otero, Gorzelanny, Manship, Joba Chamberlain or Tommy Hunter, for example). That's five veterans they brought in. Otero, until the 7th yesterday, has pitched exceptionally well. Obviously, the White Sox invested money into Robertson and Duke two years ago, but not much since then. Generally, teams that lose a couple of key bullpen pieces to season ending injuries during the season, have to bring in guys from other organizations if they are contending. I don't understand the argument here. The Sox needed to sign 5 guys earlier, but because they didn't they need to trade for another and that is $2-3 million down the drain?

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 08:04 AM) Petricka and Putnam were not high end relievers. Petricka pitched to a WHIP of around 1.4...the good late inning guys are 1.1 or below. Putnam was really good in 2014, but mediocre in other years. Useful guys for the back of the pen. Duke was signed to be a late inning guy - he's been around 1.3...good player to have in the pen, but not as a top 4. Nate Jones' WHIP is under .9. they need a couple of more Jones' and, frankly, it was a wish and a prayer that the Sox would have that this year. But, really, you have to grow some of your own relievers like this...prospects who flame out as starters. Credit Hahn for signing/extending Jones though....that was big, especially as things have turned out. If Petricka was right he woul really be helpful in the 6th ans 7th. Putnam was fine too. Without those 2 there is a void, especially with Albers not anywhere near where he was last season and the first part of this season. If he can get back there and the Sox get another bullpen guy they should be fine,

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2016 -> 07:53 AM) The argument is centered around Sale, Quintana's identification, Hector Santiago, Addison Reed, Sergio Santos and Nate Jones. Daniel Hudson figures in there as well, and then of course Carlos Rodon. Montas, as well. Carson Fulmer/Spencer Adams. Obviously, before that, working with Floyd and Danks. If you go back to 2009-10, what hitters has the Sox system produced? Beckham, Flowers and Viciedo all eventually became busts, although you can still argue whether we'd be better off with Flowers catching this year (or not). Avi and Davidson have been pretty significant disappointments, as well. Counting the likes of Ramirez and Abreu as "development" projects is pushing it. So that leaves Eduardo Escobar, Saladino, Micah (struggling in the low 600's in AAA OKC), Carlos Sanchez, Trayce Thompson, Chris Carter....and now Anderson. Everyone's going to side with the pitching over the hitting in a head-to-head comparison there. 27

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 2, 2016 -> 12:01 AM) Tells them same thing every time he comes up, too much "responsibility" to actually live here. Can't imagine now bing any different. Hunch going to Sipp was pretty, pretty stupid.

Red Sox busted for International signings violations
Dick Allen replied to GGajewski18's topic in The Diamond Club
I was reading somewhere that the Red Sox just got caught. This particular offense is common. -
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) Benetti has been a touch corny, even for me, but I think he ABSOLUTELY makes Stone better. I like the move to Benetti. I respect what Hawk was, and enjoyed most of his career, but it's just time for it to be over. That's okay, it happens to everyone. I do think Steve enjoys being the star rather than the second banana. He was giddy with Chip Caray. His ego is the biggest one in the both and it really isn't close. Jason is fine. He comes up with some good ones. But he will never take losses as hard as Hawk, or enjoy the wins as much. That's OK.

He's got a foot. He'll be fine.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 02:24 PM) Wow that is huge if true. I've noticed Hawk and Stoney are as far apart as possible as you said. They moved closer together a year or 2 ago.

Does Anderson get to keep the ball? Millone gave up back to back to back hits to Garcia, Davidson and Shuck, and somehow managed to walk Anderson. I think it might be time he start looking at a new line of work.
-
Nice. The Garcia/Davidson show. You could have made some money in Vegas on that one.

QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 01:50 PM) Gun to your head. Davidson or Garcia for the rest of the year - can only choose 1.... I'm taking Garcia. Woof. That's what I would take. You know he still has a hot streak or 2 left in him, and sometimes he comes up big late. Avi is actually 3 months younger. People are excited about Davidson hitting .267 in a league Leury Garcia is flirting with .320.

QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) Rodon is dealing today. ERA under 4 for the year now. If he stays healthy, he will be in several Cy Young discussions during his career. He's still learning.

Is it past the Super 2 cutoff? Hey Rick, it might be time you go find yourself another hitter.

Gar gets a lot of crap and deservedly so, the question I have is for Paxson fans. What has he done other than get unbelievably lucky in the lottery once that shows you he can build a championship contender team? The only disaster I can think of was the Tyrus Thomas trade. Maybe making Gar the GM was bad, maybe some of his coaching choices. He's made several good moves. Buying Deng, signed some lower level free agents, Ben Gordon was fun for a while. but even then, the team simply wasn't good enough. IMO, he's well spoken, seems like he would or should know what he's doing, but the body of work screams otherwise. The JR loyalty is well know, but the Bulls have had no problem firing coaches over the years including a guy like Cartwright who has to be considered a friends and family member. It seems it all stops there.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 10:14 AM) Many on this site and over at Future Sox care way too much about strikeout rate. It's like people constantly focus on it and ignore the positives with guys. It's always, "Yeah but that K rate". Kris Bryant had a 30% K rate last year in the majors and was consistently in the mid 20's in the minors. Matt Davidson obviously isn't Kris Bryant. The k rate is fine if you do other things. Davidson hadn't. This year he is doing a bit better, but it is his 4th season in AAA. I don't know what was very positive about Matt Davidson and his bat the previous 2 seasons in Charlotte. It would be a miracle if he could contribute.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jun 30, 2016 -> 07:00 AM) One of the most underrated prospects in the system. Should get some Top 10 consideration for preseason list. At Soxfest Capra thought he was on the same level as Fulmer.

Texas gave up 6 and lost in the 9th. Must have been s***ty managing.

Thank God for Jason Coats.

Rick Hahn paying James Shields $27 million for 2 1/2 seasons...total dope AJ Preller pays James Shields $46 million for 1 1/2 seasons and trades him for Eric Johnson and a 17 year old Rick Hahn signed....crafty GM. Why didn't Preller just sign Tatis in the first place ?

Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins 6/28/2016
Dick Allen replied to Bob Sacamano's topic in 2016 Season in Review
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 28, 2016 -> 09:17 PM) LOL. I'm sure you will dredge them up. See, even when a fan tries to be optimistic, it will be used against him later. So wouldn't it be easier if, like some here, I just came out against EVERY single move, and then claimed credit later when it didn't work out? You're arguing against yourself...that I can't say anything positive or at least try to understand what the GM is attempting to do. All that said, nobody here is paid to be GM of the White Sox. We can afford to be wrong in our evaluations, and it doesn't matter in real life. Actually, go ahead. I would be interested in seeing what was written. I wasn't head over heels about Duke, he was a one year wonder concern from the very beginning. I don't remember being particularly excited about Samardzija. I was elated to get anything back for Jake Peavy, because I was never in favor of the extension in the first place. It doesn't matter that is the point. Yet you ways try to give the illusion that you knew the correct moves all along. If RH and RV know as little about baseball as you claim, none of us no anything. That included you.
