QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) Is Hendry promising Towers a position in the organization when the Padres eventually fire him? Why are so many teams willing to help out the cubs? It really is pathetic. Basically it will cost any team that is not the cubs $24M more than the cubs to acquire him.
-
If Santo got in, the late 60's cubs would have 4 HOF members that other than in 69 were not that good of teams. Something is there for me as to why he should not get in and I am not sure what it is. I also believe he was not well liked by the media or his peers. If his grand standing is not working then there is a reason why he is not in there and he needs to accept it. I have never heard someone politick more than him to get himself in. He almost feels like he is entitled to be in. I really think Billy Williams is keeping him out.

Worst Professional Sports Franchises Since WWII
Harry Chappas replied to knightni's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) Baseball - Pittsburgh Pirates Ice Hockey - Florida Panthers Football - Detroit Lions Basketball - Minnesota Timberwolves This is from WWII not the first gulf war. Other than the Lions those other franchises have had some level of success, some to a significant degree. s*** the Pirates have won as many playoff series as the cubs since 1989 and fought hard with the Big Red Machine in the 70's and had mermorable players and championships throughout. -
Rumors: Sox/Reds Talking Dye for Bailey Swap
Harry Chappas replied to Dick Allen's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If they get Bailey, think of the bullets KW has to ship off for a proven #1 or FA $$$. Manny, Furcal and Peavy/Halladay...... -
It better be.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Of course those high schoolers arent representing a professional organization, a city and a franchise when they make sexually suggestive comments. They also arent making them on TV in front of a million people. They were 100 percent correct in their actions. A couple of things (1) the television studio does not need to air that if the comments are that offensive as I assume it was not on live tv (I could be wrong) but why put a dolt like that on live tv and (2) a fine is sufficent here as it is in poor taste but the hit on Aaron Johnson is a tad bit more of an issue than that as well as otehrs taking a run at a guy. -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) I’m noticing that some of the people who are vigorously against the Bailey Trade seem fond of getting Daniel “I’m older, have no control , and everyone’s whose tried to fix me has failed” Cabrera. I’m finding that slightly disconcerting. Jermaine Dye stays here in the Cabrera situation. As a numebr 5 he is fine. You kind of know what Cabrera will give you and there is a track record be that as it may but it is still there. Bailey costs one of the most productive outfielders in baseball and could be in AAA to start the season.

If Uribe doesn't accept arbitration last year who plays third?

Roberts and Daniel Cabrera are attainable much more easily. I think Roberts is a great one year fit until Beckham is ready. The rest of the options are meh..... How about Roberts and Furcal with Ramirez in CF or at 3B with Anderson in CF.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 08:58 PM) I just saw a documentary that displayed his log book and it showed scores of 48/50 and 49/50 on consecutive days. Were those forged? From what I saw, it doesn't look like that tough a shot. I've taken some long shots out west and it seems doable. Was that the Peter Jennings special on the History Channel? It was awesome. The debunking of the JFK movie was great. After watching that I really felt dumb to think that there was a conspiracy. So many theories were wasily shott down. Funny how his neighbor got him the job at the book depository. The coincidental happenings like Ruby and LHO's desire to become a Cuban or Russian citizen was really cool. They had KGB agents on and basically it said that both conutries wanted nothing to do with him. The interview with LHO's brother and the his neighbors were really telling as well. The amount of conincidences can be hard to believe but that documentary did a nice job of proving them all.

Frustrating as hell I was in and out of watching hte game but it seemed that they controleld the tempo again, from what I saw. Huet with a nice outing but he can not seem to win. -
I love how worthless Vazquez is to some on this board although it should not shock me as every pitcher sucks anyway. Vazquez, Dye and Jenks could make just about any NL team a contendor if not a divisional favorite. Say what you want about Vazquez but he is as much a guarantee as anyone to give you 32 starts and 200 innings. The value of that is so underappreciated around here that it is sad. If Hudson and Smoltz could get on the field this year and they somehow got Peavy and Vazquez, the Braves would be tough.

Seabrook is becoming the Orlando Cabrerra in my mind to the Hawks Great game last night. The slow starts would be killing them if Khabby wasn't standing on his head early in these games. The book made me just shake my head. I get what they are trying to do I just think they are going over the top in getting there. It seems like we need to be over the top in making sure everyone knows we are fans of the team ala the cubs. -
Jenks, Konekro and Dye could all be of use to them.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:33 PM) I'm still waiting for the White Sox to get into a bidding war for a big time free agent and sign that player during the 21st century (not including Konerko, which was a totally different situation). A part of me thinks KW wants Manny to play left next year and DH after that. I also think he is going hard after Furcal or Roberts. Aren't Abreu and Guillen pals.......

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:16 PM) That team wouldn't win 70 games, and then the attendance decline would destroy our payroll for the following season. Sometimes, I wish people would take a step back and look at the roster they're actually predicting and think if there's any chance of that happening. Thank you. This thread is quickly turning into all of the marketable Sox players suck but the youth of other franchises rock. Having a young team is not the be all end all that is being portrayed here. If the Sox are giving up Jenks/Vazquez I better of heard of the player(s) they are getting I don't care about their potential VORP, OBP+, K/9IP, ERA+ or crap like that.

QUOTE (CWSOX45 @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) The report out of New York is that he wants to start for the Mets. If they won't start him, then he wants to be traded to another team where he will continue to relieve. He just refuses to pitch from the pen in New York. He feels the Mets owe him a starting job. (Yeah right.) Either way if the Sox trade for him he will be pitching from the pen. I am not really up to speed on Heilman other than he has pitched for the Mets and is not a stand out on their staff. Jenks would be their second most productive pitcher IMO. For Heilman to not be able to start for them over the crap they throw out there tells me all I need to know. Jackson for Dye is a terrible move.

The frustrating thing is how they, Boston and the cub can seemingly eat bad contracts with no ill affect. If Burnett sucks it does not negatively impact them as much as other teams.

If Barack and Michelle Obama got into a fight...
Harry Chappas replied to lostfan's topic in The Filibuster
Michelle Obama looks like she could be the toughest person to ever reside in the White House. I am not sure why I think that but she looks like a lady that would kick your ass in a heartbeat. Women from the southside usually scare the hell out of me anyway. Women with power and from the southside.........I stand no chance. -
I think they make a run at Hudson or Furcal to lead off and give CF to Anderson. Ramirez will be the fall back in CF with the likes of Nix, Betemit, Getz, and Beckman for fall back middle of the infield guys. I think Danks takes CF or RF in 2010 which is why Anderson/Ramirez will be out there next year instead of a longer term guaranteed guy. I think the singing and dancing caught up with ole Nick. I think the Mets take a run at Dunn and K-Rod before looking at Jenks and Dye. Jenks will not be moved until the big free agents are signed.

QUOTE (G&T @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 10:41 AM) There's something that kept a lot of teams away. The offers seem to be Atlanta and the garbage the Cubs offered, which baseball people didn't believe was viable. There wasn't anything in between? Seems odd. You can bet every team in baseball inquired. The cubs run their organization via the media to keep their name and their "buzz" out there. They float the names of guys that they are willing to give up in hopes other teams may be interested. Now their fans can say that they took a run at this guy. Bruce Levine looks like dope for fueling this stuff though sometimes. -

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) The Hawks don't care about you. That may seem harsh, but it's reality. I don't know your history Jenks Heat, but I have a hunch you have been a Hawks fan for a few years. If you sat in the stands during the 2002 season, there is a great chance your sitting there now. I'm in the same boat. They know I'm going to be at the UC win or suck, they don't have to advertise to me. They are targeting the casual fan, or the fan that hasn't been to the UC is 10 years. They have to kiss those fans ass, and it seems to be working. I agree but I am not sure any of that is selling the $80 seats as much as I finally get to enjoy really good hockey. I really can get over the orchastrated hype. With the Sox it seems to fit the motif of the team with the Hawks it just seems like they are piling it on extra thick. By the way I used to go to about 15 games a year but now that they are on tv, on I am in no hurry to get out there. BILL WAS RIGHT!!!!! -

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) When there's nothing to complain about, people find a reason to complain. It's irriating and contrived. I love the fact that they are on tv which if they were not would never give rise to the hoopla that is irritating me. The Versteeg, Kane and Towes line is incredible. Sharp and Havlat are as good a second line wing combo in hockey. The defense is pretty solid and deep. The dualing goaltenders look really good. Joel and Bowman already appear to be making Detroit nervous. All reasons to be happy now stop kissing my ass as a fan it is insulting.
