  1. QUOTE (fathom @ May 13, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) Buehrle's lost his change-up, it's pretty obvious. His velocity is actually up from the past few seasons, but there's only a 6 mph difference between his heater and fastball. Also, he's been just killed by some terrible defense, especially at the SS position. His change-up? That was one of the few pitches that he had working for him last night, and the one he got most of his strikeouts on. And as for the errors, he needs to pitch over them. I understand if he gives up an unearned run here or there, but he doesn't then have to give up 5 straight hits and let them blow the game open.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 12, 2008 -> 09:57 PM) I know the defense has been horrible tonight, but the next time Buerhle pitches over an error will probably be the first time in a long time. BTW, Wassermann really isn't a major leaguer. I don't think I've ever agreed with you more.
  3. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ May 11, 2008 -> 10:06 PM) Way too many factors involved there for it to be so simple. Moving streets around costs a heck of alot more than the fuel to run the busses. Likely the streets were there first as well, and if they are a major thru road, not going to be easy to move. And the moment one of those bike riders got hit by a car on the way to school, you know that the shark-like lawyers will be right there to sue the pants off the school. Hey, here's an idea, instead of the school/state changing ebverythign around to fit you (the student) why not just move closer to the school so you can just walk? Oh wait, because then YOU would have to pay for that. Solutions are easy, until you have to pay the bill (directly). While I am not going to be as harsh about the article as you, I do feel as though these small-time actors take a bit of a beating from the media when it comes to stories like this. What is some school principal supposed to do when something like this comes up? He is already under all these competing interests from his school district, the state, the federal government, parents, teachers, others in the community, etc. It's extremely difficult for a teacher or a principal to make the correct decision when there are so many parties he/she has to placate. It would've been admirable had he/she accepted the donation for the bike rack, but you're right- just wait until the first kid gets whacked crossing the street on a bike- and then the principal is getting chewed out for not having more crossing guards or something. It's difficult for these school administrators.
  4. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 11, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) Maybe civil liberties was the wrong choice of words. Personal information such as medical records, and your social security are protected by several state laws. There is plenty of examples where people have sued over the accidental disclosure of personal information. Here are some Hipaa examples. Was the information in any of those examples discovered because of a computer hacker? It seems like in those examples the information was either inadvertently disclosed because of accident, or because of employees or the companies seeking to use the information in some other way. In this example, the information was obtained by someone with absolutely no access to the system breaching the system. Seems like apples and oranges to me. SSI, I understand you are in the business of network security. What does the law say the liability is for companies' who have their databases breached by hackers? I would assume standard negligence principles would apply, but perhaps there is some legal test that the majority of states use to determine what is negligence regarding network security and what isn't?
  5. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 11, 2008 -> 06:13 PM) Well really how far am I off on this. The medical reports that this kid snagged are covered under Hipaa protections. All they need to prove is that they did not provide adequate levels of security. I haven't looked into the law on this particular issue, but cashing in on your civil liberties being violated is usually quite a difficult task.
  6. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ May 11, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) Because the civil penalties are secondary to the inital crime. If he pulled this stunt at a company, he would be gone. He found a mickey mouse security setup at a school that is run by the PTA. You know the same motivated parents who think that because their kids commit crimes and they have money, that they shouldnt be held accountable. Much like in Hinsdale where the parents dont want the police to arrest people for underage drinking, the New Trier parents can frown on a crime like this as cute thing. Well when their children enter the corporate world, they will no longer be up against the computer science teacher who is also their security admin. And corporations file charges. On the lawsuit angle. I would sue the school over their lack of protections, and then would sue the student as well for the max on his parents homeowners insurance over violations of my civil liberties. Its great that he wanted to see my SAT Scores, as well as as my medical records. I can only hope that the bags of money will make me feel better. I wonder how many of the kids and parents congratulating him right now would become equally outraged if some megabucks can drop into their kids laps. I understand your second paragraph is mostly in jest, but you honestly need to see the other side of the coin in regards to your consistent comments regarding lawsuits. Things really aren't like how you enjoy trying to portray them.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2008 -> 06:12 PM) Up to 3.32...hopefully he does well in his next start in San Fran. Lametown.
  8. Octavio is freaking hilarious.....DJ asks him if he thinks the bullpen will be strong throughout the entire season, and asks for a quick answer, and OD goes on for like 4 minutes before finishing his answer....
  9. I think what he was saying is that he doesn't want Kenny to go out and look to add more offense just yet. The hitting has been a problem, but I think what he was trying to say is that our hitters will not be the problem- that out offense will be ok...
  10. Gotta love the Beyond the Glory about the 88' Dodgers....I love when they play shows like that in the rain delay.... "You talk about a roll of the dice...."
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 6, 2008 -> 11:02 PM) The hammond mayor comes off looking like a real ass to me. I couldn't believe he was saying that Lake County looked "corrupt" because the votes had not come in. How could a Mayor actually say that on CNN?
  12. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ May 6, 2008 -> 02:56 PM) Just got back from court. I will be sentenced to 10 days in CC for driving on a statutory suspended license (it was originally suspensed for driving drunk). Anyway, I've never been in actual jail before. I'm a little nervous. Has anybody from the board spent any time in jail? What should I expect? Are the "don't drop the soap or else" myths true? Any info will be appreciated. Was that your first DUI? And what did you get pulled over for when you were driving on a statutorily suspended license? Seems a little harsh that they would actually give you 10 days in jail....

    LOST!!!!

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 2, 2008 -> 10:05 PM) I said that a while back (but on on these boards). I think Jin either died as Sun left the island OR, and I think this is the case, he is still alive on the island and the monument Sun and hurley visited is her remembrance of him. I think Jin is definitely still alive. Something wasn't right about that scene where Sun and Hurley went to his tombstone.
  14. I try to be sensitive as the next person about respecting women, even going so far as to encourage manners towards women more common in the south than around here....but boys will also be boys....and there are times when women just need to understand that. And to Steve, and Yasny, and Tex....have you ever been around a fairly large group of women? Do you hear how they speak in regards to men and sex? Many times they're far worse than men are, and yet men don't get all up in arms about that...and neither do women. This is not a normal working environment, so stop comparing it to one. This is not a normal profession, so stop comparing it to one. I couldn't agree more with stating this is fake outrage. Of all the things to debate in this country right now, this is what we are going to debate. Ridiculous.
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ May 5, 2008 -> 01:41 PM) Maybe I see things differently, but the Chicago media is very soft on the White Sox. Heck, they were absolutely brutal last year, and there was hardly anyone claiming KW or Ozzie should have lost their job. The Cubs are criticized much more heavily. The other day, Piniella received tons of criticism for not replacing Soriano in LF. Does Ozzie really want to get the spotlight on his managerial decisions. He's made some brutal decisions in the last week, starting with the BA squeeze attempt. Gibbons has managed circles around Ozzie this series. How easy can Ozzie make it for him by never have a PH for one of our batters. Gibbons has been going lefty/lefty righty/righty in the 8th and 9th innings. The media is soft on the White Sox because they are the second team in town. Most of the press the team gets is related to Ozzie's rants or Mariotti ripping on Hawk and JR. Imagine how little attention the team would get if we had a manager like Bobby Cox or something. Another reason the media is soft on the White Sox is because they are incredibly inept. This town is filled with more bafoons on the radio, tv, and in print then one could possibly imagine for such a big market. One would think for a handful of guys who do this as their profession, they would know more about the team and the game than many of the posters here on Soxtalk. Unfortunately, this is not the case. That, is unacceptable.
  16. I'd be open to it, but I guess at this point I still value Uribe's defense too much to consider replacing him. I just don't think the fortunes of this team fall on how one position in our lineup hits. I don't want Swisher leading off anymore, and I'm not really sure who should be there (sort of OC by default), but if the entire team isn't hitting (as is the case right now), I think having the best possible defense we can muster is the most important thing right now. Just my lousy opinion though...
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 1, 2008 -> 06:24 PM) Then let's let Richar and Ramirez develop and find out what we have this year and next. Absolutely. The question becomes do you use Fields as trade bait to acquire a 2b that can leadoff....
  18. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 1, 2008 -> 05:10 PM) I'd much rather deal Richar than Fields. Average 2Bman can generally be found all over the place and it's even possible that Richar could be dealt for a 2Bman. I'd much rather include Richar in a deal for Roberts and have his contract over the next like 2 years than to have Crede locked up for 5 with no idea whether his back will hold up nor having any idea whether Richar will be a good player. Fields has already proven that he has a ton of power and if he can start to make a bit better contact, he'll become a huge threat in the middle of the order, and Roberts has proven to be a pretty consistent player over the past few years. I'd prefer that much moreso than dealing Fields. That being said, Fields is tradeable...it should be for nothing less than either a rising star or a very, very good MLB player already with a few years left on his tires. Anything else really hurts badly. The only problem with that being that Richar has little trade value right now. I have no problem with keeping Fields, but I'd be very happy to listen if we could deal him for a top 2b or ss prospect. Only problem there is, those seem to be few and far between right now...
  19. Well, we don't "need" Fields next year simply because he will be inexpensive. Between Danks/Floyd/Quentin/Swisher we have 4 players who will make about $6.5-7 million total in 09'. Even if you assume that Buehrle/Vaz/Contreras will still be here, along with Pauly, Thome, Dye AND Crede, AND the bullpen, there is still enough money there. All you have to do is plug in Ramirez/Uribe/Richar at one of the MI positions, and a player you could theoretically acquire for Fields via trade, and the payroll could still work as it does this year. Fields is a nice asset. But it is not absolutely necessary that he be here, especially if you deal him for a similarly-salaried player who fills a need.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Apr 30, 2008 -> 06:05 PM) Taking away any of my homerism for a minute I have to say that honestly Camden Yards > US Cellular. The Cell has better concessions though. Visited OPACY last year for three games. Certainly the outside is beautiful, but I honestly was a little underwhelmed once we got inside. We got great seats (scalped them), but it just wasn't all that impressive. Maybe you just like what you're accustomed to...
  21. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 11:43 PM) Why is this stickied? Nick Swisher is a better hitter than Orlando Cabrera. He should get more PA. Replacing Uribe with Richar is another matter entirely and should be done ASAP. It's a post I did for the TalkChicagoSports website.
  22. I know I am in the vast minority here, but I'm starting to think Uribe should be the one playing shortstop with OC at second base. Every play that isn't routine seems difficult with Cabrera. He seems like he is throwing a shotput over to first base. Juan has been magnificent at second base, but ss is the more important position.
  23. QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 09:48 PM) Never in a million years did I think I would be disappointed in seeing Gavin Floyd go 6 innings, 3 runs (2 earned) when he had no command of his fastball. Or any other pitch for that matter...
  24. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Apr 29, 2008 -> 10:01 PM) That term is very subjective, so it's extremely difficult to argue what is the "optimal" lineup. I'm actually not sure how much of a difference that flip flop would make, but in theory the 1-2 currently in place is how I would keep it. Swisher gets on base better than most, and Cabrera can do the little things with the bat you want in the 2 hole. However, Cabrera and his situational hitting has been pretty disappointing to start the year, so thats something to question. If you did want to shake things up, trying Quentin in one of the top 2 spots might be a decent experiment to play with. Thats one way a possible "shake up" could work to the Sox favor, but if I was the manager, aside from canning Walker( ) I would leave the order as is for the time being. I tend to agree with you, but it just seems like Swisher is not comfortable right now. I think he was doing well at the beginning of the season because pitchers weren't exactly hitting their spots and he was walking like crazy, but lately, since they've been coming at him more, he seems to be in between trying to take everything and trying to be the hitter with gap power that he has been. I don't want Quentin leading off because he's been such a good run producer thus far, so that sort of leaves OC by default. Given the fact that he's just swinging at crap up there right now, putting him in the leadoff spot might make him take a bit of a more patient approach and settle him down a bit. It's not optimal for a prototypical lineup, but I think it may be optimal for our lineup.
