Bio Fuels Starving The Poor?
Is the US still offering wheat subsidies to keep bread prices low? I wonder if this is a common issue around the world.

Bio Fuels Starving The Poor?
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 2, 2007 -> 11:08 AM) The exploding price of corn tortillas has become a major political issue in Mexico. They were state subsidized, have they stopped that?

May/June Quotes of the Month
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) I guess this means we have a new leader in the race for "Most Shameful Self-Promotion" Rookies. Pros in self promotion know to use the witty response to an even more witty post that they themselves provided.

Bio Fuels Starving The Poor?
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 2, 2007 -> 11:02 AM) It was either Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez that was quoted as saying something like this was a genocide against poor people. I don't remember where I read that anymore, but it was a month or two ago. With the ethanol plants in Iowa needing so much corn, Iowa, IOWA, is about to become a net corn importer. I think the quote above is hyperbole, but it loosly grounded in some facts.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 2, 2007 -> 09:19 AM) Change is good, stop being so loyal to Walker. Hey looks like season tickets will be vastlly available next year, thats fine by me. We suck! Not loyal to Walker, I worry that wholesale changes would take weeks to learn and ultimately hurt more than help. It almost smacks of a white flag move way too early in the season. The change, as I posted earlier, should have been made before Spring training began.

Walk me through the change y'all are expecting. Wednesday, Walker gets released. Thursday a new hitting coach arrives. Friday he changes everyone's approach, notices mistakes that immediately are fixed, and the team is rolling by the weekend?

Bush Vetos Troop Withdrawl Bill
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:16 AM) I agree the bill is crap. But you are saying the line of defense is the President, and he was a big part of the mess in the first place, so... he vetoed himself?! In a sense, yes.

Bush Vetos Troop Withdrawl Bill
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ May 2, 2007 -> 08:02 AM) You can't be serious. In case you didn't notice, he's the one who bought the pooch in the first place. Serious as can be. If drew a line in the sand and said he would veto the bill. As you mentioned, everyone screwed this up. The line of defense is a Presidential veto and he did. I love it when our system works. And if Congress can muster the over ride, then so be it. That is exciting also. But I applaud Bush for his back bone in the matter. And again, that bill is almost a poster child for what is wrong in American politics. Take all the b.s., pork, and stuff that has nothing to do with the main bill out and start from there.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 1, 2007 -> 10:53 PM) CHANGE IS GOOD......do it I generally agree, but if the next coach comes in and starts making wholesale changes, that may be far worst. The time to make the switch is before Spring training begins.

QUOTE(The Critic @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) First I ask them how the weather is up there. (That's always an awesome ice-breaker) Then I challenge them to a slam-dunk contest. (I let them win) Then I ask them to clean my gutters for me. (Selfish pricks always say no) Then I think of original nicknames for them like Stretch or Phone Pole or or Stilts or Manute Bol. They usually get pissed at some point, but I just keep running through their legs and they get frustrated cuz they can't catch me all the way down here. Then, to be nice, I offer them a ride wherever they're going, and I let them know it's cool cuz my car has a sunroof for their head. So yeah, we get along.- How tall are you/how old are you?

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ May 1, 2007 -> 10:29 PM) Mother rapers. Father stabbers. . . Father rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! How many future leaders of industry and politics were on the "Group W" bench? The name is ironic now- GOP Primaries/Candidates thread
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2007 -> 07:40 PM) Battlefield Earth was an excellent Sci-Fi book, and surprisingly L Ron Hubbard was an awesome Sci-Fi writer. The Mission Earth Series was the best I ever read. Looking back I think the reason he was so good at the genre was that he was a little wee bit out in space himself. Now the John Travolta movie just gives me yet another reason, after Grease and Saturday Night Fever, to dispise the man. . I've come to like Grease for what it is. Just a sappy, light weight musical. Not many musicals hit the big screen. I've wasted a couple hours on a lot worse. And come on, Olivia in the leather at the end- Bush Vetos Troop Withdrawl Bill
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ May 1, 2007 -> 06:32 PM) Everyone screwed the pooch on this one. And the one person that could stop it, did. This may be his best moment of 2007.- White Sox vs. Mariners, 5/1/07 (L)
