  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 04:54 PM) Talk to me again next Sunday after Detroit is done with NYY and the Halos. If it's still 4-5 games or more a lead, then I'll agree. But they're 6-13 in their last 19 games. And they still have to go to both Minny and Chicago. I should say it is more probable Detroit will have a worse record than either Minny or the Sox in this last stretch. I don't believe they will collapse enough for both teams to pass them.
  2. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) Thome-Garland As much as I have been ragging on Jim Thome's philosophy offensively and saying it is the reason the Sox are swinging for the fences again, I think his prescence alone has helped many in this lineup have the years they've had, and it is one of the main reasons the Sox are as good offensively as they are. The Sox made 2 changes on the offense, and they go from horrible to a powerhouse overnight? There's one guy I can think of. I'm also tempted to just give MVP to Garland too. That man has MAHBLES. Dye's been amazing too...I just look at MVP as most valuable player, not best stats for a hitter. IMHO, and I understand those who disagree, for a DH to pass a position player for MVP, the DH has to be a magnitude higher than the position player. Not just a little better. It better be substantially better. I think Dye is close enough that he would get the nod. I agree with your observation about Thome, his hitting, and his impact. I would also add, Thome has probably made Dye better. I wouldn't call last year's offense horrible.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 04:50 PM) Or Detroit. Less probably.
  4. Dye - Garland
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 02:57 PM) Texsox - it really doesn't matter. I understand your point and I totally agree with it, but since the birth of the wild card only one team with 95 plus wins has missed out on the playoffs. To me, that says it all right there. What it tells me is either Minny or the Sox will stumble. Which is probably accurate.
  6. Dear Fellow Democrat, An important fact has to be remembered as we recall the victims of last year's devastating storms: Almost half of all children in New Orleans lived in poverty -- before Hurricane Katrina. The callous and inept federal response to Hurricane Katrina revealed that, when faced with a crisis that experts had actually predicted, the Republican administration was utterly unprepared and unresponsive. Meanwhile, the shameful foot-dragging since the storm on reconstruction and help to families shows the same lack of interest in solving real problems and saving lives. So far, the administration has gotten around to spending barely half of what Congress authorized. The Republican administration's failures before and after the storms are linked by a common approach to the solemn responsibilities of government. Simply put: they aren't interested. This Republican leadership's philosophy means that our government simply will not meet the needs of our people. Not because it's impossible -- but because they don't believe it should. And so we are left with each American having to do what he or she can to help. There is too much to be done for individuals acting alone to fix everything, but until we achieve a change in leadership we all must step up to the plate. One way to do that is by donating new or used books to the Children's Defense Fund, an organization that's working to make sure that school libraries in Gulf Coast are well-stocked for returning students. Only 18% of New Orleans children had returned by the end of the last school year, according to the New York Times. More children will return this year, but the conditions they will return to can be terrible. I want to ask that you participate in a book drive for the children of the Gulf Coast. It's important, and it's a tangible way for you to make a difference: http://www.democrats.org/bookdrive While we all take time to reflect and do our small part to help, one thing is clear: Democrats offer a new direction. We believe in a government that takes its obligations to the American people seriously, one that is always improving the services and protections it provides -- a government that becomes more efficient as it meets challenges and takes on new challenges with serious commitment. And we believe passionately in the responsibility of public service -- doing the hard, unglamorous work that comes with solving real problems that impact people's lives. With that sense of responsibility missing in our leaders today, we find ourselves in deep trouble. A fifth grader interviewed by the New York Times recently -- one of the few who have made it back -- told the reporter that his father, who is in the National Guard, has been sent to the Middle East. Meanwhile, back on the home front, their house has been burglarized. The boy summed up what people on the Gulf Coast -- and people all across the country -- are feeling right now: "We deserve better." Governor Howard Dean, M.D. P.S. -- We've set up a resource center to help people learn more a year after Katrina. From the promises made and subsequently broken, to a look back at the failure of leadership on the levees in New Orleans, take a minute to explore just where we are one year later: http://www.democrats.org/katrinaanniversary
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 03:39 PM) Another publication kicks the conspiracy theories in the teeth-Popular Mechanics takes on 9-11 OMG the government got to them also . . .
  8. QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 12:24 PM) Why would the doors INTO the classrooms being locked be a fire hazard? If the nearest point of exit is through that room. I guess the example would be a large first story window. You wouldn't want to exit through the fire if you could go through a window. I am certain their procedures is for the door to be unlocked before exiting. Honestly, this is such a one in a billion chance, it probably isn't important until something happens.
  9. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 02:36 PM) I know I'm not living up to my reputation, but if we go into that final series with the Twins and still have a shot, we'll do what we have to do to get into the playoffs. Please log out and reenter your password for security purposes I do agree with you. One back on that weekend and I think we're in for at least a tie. I haven't bothered to look up the tie breaker.
  10. Texas >>>>> greater than any other state for Friday Night Football. Our local sports talk station will have reporters at every Rio Grande Valley game, about 28-30 games. All will be calling in with updates. The local TV stations will lead with High School over Cowboys (forgetabout the Texans). By the end of the season most of these kids will get more pub than TO locally.
  11. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 10:10 AM) What exactly is a Beta Blocker? They are commonly perscribed for high blood pressure, along with other drugs. Here are some of the side effects, easy enough to tell why a golfer would want them How do beta-blockers work? Beta-blockers "block" the effects of adrenaline on your body's beta receptors. This slows the nerve impulses that travel through the heart. As a result, your heart does not have to work as hard because it needs less blood and oxygen. That pounding in your chest when you have a three footer for par? Just a little less pounding. Those hands that are shaking as you try and ease a chips down a marble staircase? Just a little less shaking.
  12. TB: 3-0 KC: 2-1 BOS: 2-1 CLE: 3-1 LAA: 1-2 OAK: 1-2 DET: 1-2 SEA: 2-2 CLE: 2-1 MIN: 2-1 Total = 19-13 Tied with Minny, behind Tigers
  13. QUOTE(jasonxctf @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 02:16 PM) Dell... enjoy your call to India When I was having a problem with my home network, a call to Linksys in India was the best group I worked with. Even after they knew it wasn't their product they continued to help. Screw Time Warner (Roadrunner) HP, and Microsoft. (It was a Microsoft update that was f***ing up HP computers.)
  14. You have to look at the second team in the wild card standing to know what it took. A team may have taken the wild card with 98 wins, but if the runner up only had 89 then it actually took 90.
  15. TX Hutchison (R, I) 55% Radnofsky (D) 37% I have watched her and I do like Hutchinson. She seems to be well informed (great staffers). Of course I disagree with many of her votes, but by election time will probably vote for her reelection. We know what a softy I am for GOPerheads
  16. Mark is the team leader. He has got to find his old form and fast.
  17. While getting to the playoffs shouldn't be a requirement, it does weigh in the voter's minds. With guys this close, and a strong argument could be made for all of them, guys who are watching the playoffs will not be given consideration over guys who are playing. So JD, pray for some pitching.
  18. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) That article is amazing. It is rare that an article could totally change my opinion. It does seem like they are being unfairly singled out.
  19. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 09:05 AM) Joe Borchard? He was a good kid, and he got us Thornton Yeah him. I forgot his name.

The practice is illegal in most countries, although it seems strange any society would offer more protection to a dog than say a cow or pig. I'm not certain why Asians have become the brunt of these jokes. It could be that with the meat cut up it would seem easy to substitute one type of meat for another. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/chinese.htm http://www.snopes.com/critters/edibles/tourist.htm
  21. The other thing that uniforms do is put every student on a level playing field. They all dress the same and it is difficult to tell the poor kids from the rish kids. It also helps to create school identity and school spirit. I was initially against uniforms, but came around when my kids attended a school that tried to enforce a uniform program.
  22. QUOTE(UC76 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 11:46 AM) Hopefully, the Sox will have already clinched the division by then and the game will be meaningless anyway. Then we won't be missing much. I'm thinking positive. clinch the division, I think you are testing positive. Maybe the wildcard . . . in hell for the division
  23. QUOTE(mu mu @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) "True performance levels?" Is it mandatory that every player have the same statistical year, every year? Are better statistical years always due to good luck, and worse statistical years always bad luck, and median statistical years, no luck was involved? It's really just semantics, and means nothing, there is no such thing as luck. Replace "luck" with "chance" or "the abundance of random events helping not hurting the performance". I believe sometimes a player does get "lucky". A ball hits a door hinge and caroms away from and not towards a fielder. A fan reaches across the wall and gives the batter another chance. An umpire makes a homerun call when it wasn't. That can drectly result in a W instead of a L. Easy to see that happen for a game. Perhaps some players are in the right place at the right time to benefit from these random events more often than others. Watching a team you get a feel for some guys just always having good things happening and others have bad luck following them. I think both cases are magnified by the attitude of the player. Some guys "make their own luck". QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 11:45 AM) ^ Soxtalk irony I discovered, after extensive research, that I agree with every baseball genious and disagree with all the baseball idiots. Amazingly enough, that same discovery was made by thousands of other soxtalk posters , go figure
  24. currently the majority of this board rate the team's chances at ZERO, and we b**** that a computer comes up with 40%
  25. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 10:32 AM) It's CRITICAL that we get through the hurricane season unscathed. Having said that, I say in the next two weeks, something ugly is going to happen geopolitically, and Iran will be right in the middle of it, because they need to prop the prices higher again. I passed by one of the offshore rig repair facilities and they are still crowded with work. That would indicate to me we are still behind in production.
