  1. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) Tex, either they're good enough to be a regular or they're not. Not necessarily their fault if they're not. But if someone is brought in to be the #1 guy and you're told you're a reserve, play hard and compete but accept your role. There's a fine line we're talking about here. Doesn't sound like Harris gets it, just my opinion. It is a fine line and it can be drawn in different places depending on the player. Players decline, players improve. The only way a guy will become a starter is if he thinks he should be a starter. If Harris, at his age, accepts that he is #2 to a guy who has never played game 1 in the MLB, then Harris is not a competitor. Harris is not some 35 year old veteran, easing into retirement. He's building his career, and just handing over a starting job without a fight is accepting defeat and not IMHO a winners attitude. And I will repeat, the role of a reserve is to push the starter so everyone gets better.
  2. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 02:52 PM) ANy team that gives ANY player a 7 year deal are fools. THere are so many things that can happen in a 7 year stretch (injury, salary cap, decline in production). If I am a team and a client demands a 7 year deal, it is a 4 or 5 year deal with team options for the remaining years of the contract. So you wouldn't want a player wanting to show his loyalty and sign a career type contract?
  3. QUOTE(Man Of Steel @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 03:56 PM) Dolphins... best logo ever... Yes, the terror of flipper . . .

  9. QUOTE(JimH @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) Generalization, big time. Players need to know, learn, and accept their roles. Nothing wrong with aspiring to be more. But understanding your limitations on a baseball team, and hence your role, does not a loser make. Is the role to sit on the bench and wave a pennant or push the guy in front of him? What limitations do you want them to accept? Hitting for average? Fielding? Baserunning?
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 01:16 PM) There are quite a few players last year who put up those type of numbers making under 11 mill per year. Your right, that maggs does have the consistancy thing going for him, like I said 11 mill seems like a fair price for a healthy maggs, I just don't see how it's a bargain. The key is name a player who has put up those numbers *then* signed a contract for less. Of course you have guys who are new, signing their first contract, then reach stardom.
  11. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) How's 11-12 mill for 5 years a bargain??? Maggs is a great player but even when healthy I think maggs is worth 10-11 mill and 5 years is an awful lost of year, I just don't see how that can possibly be a bargain. Last 5 full seasons 30+ Home Runs .300 + Average 100+ RBI $11,000,000 name another guy with that offense that will sign for less in any of the next 5 or 6 years.
  12. QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) I bet the left one is upside down. I gave my right one for a really cool car . . .
  13. Maggs will have to pass a physical. If he's 85% to 100%, some team is getting a bargain.

    QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 06:56 AM) I wouldn't mind getting one but it would be a bit hard with the shipping etc., unless there's a way around it. I ship small lightweight stuff to Australia all the time. Postage is usually around $1.25
  15. I hope every guy on the bench thinks he should be starting and busts his ass to prove it. Guys that "understand" their role as backups and benchmates are losers.

  17. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:56 PM) lol rock on. Thats my hometown hockey team. Here's the banner with a logo on it. No love for the 'Dillas' logo as well. All of the 6 original hockey teams are cool. The Blackhaws always have been my favorite. I also like the Hidalgo Killer Bees hockey logo
  18. There are teams that year after year have zero hope of ever smelling post season play. There are a more teams that have almost no hope of ever winning a World Series. I would rather Baseball have some salary min/max system in place.
  19. All this to win a $20 bet from Dubya. I agree with Prof Jim. The VP's people should have had him in a warm, dark overcoat like everyone else. There is proper protocol and this isn't it.
  20. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 04:00 AM) Ilitch has a plan to put accordian players in the Winsdor Ontario strip clubs and tie in a special night for stippers and accordian player at Comerica. This is all a plot to pull in the Canadien market so they can increase attendance and therefore afford Boras' demands for Magglio. I think it will work. Actually, sources close to me, tell me, that this was Boras' plan, and three teams are studying the plan while being mesmerized by highlight reels of Maggs before the injury.
  21. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 01:45 AM) http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor...dc&e=2&ncid=757 A stripper and an accordian player worth C$2.5 million. Only in Canada! I gotta love a guy who googles accordian players, strippers, and Tigers. I'm guessing this had something to do with Maggs?
  22. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 29, 2005 -> 01:28 AM) Welcome to Soxtalk. (Someone delete the thread where Jeckle says all that stuff about his gf) LOL, May I bring a can of spam to this welcome party?
  23. Greedy team, where's the loyalty after he saved baseball and put them on the edge of a World Series.
  24. Maggs should trust his agent who has more experience in this sort of thing. If any player was more experienced in negotiations than their agents, why hire one? I would also be surprised if these accounts were accurate and that the Tigers were the ones the leak was targeted to. Boras just set the starting point for any other team that is interested.
