    QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 12:38 PM) Its a pisser ain't it? I here the new students won't stand for it
  3. QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 12:18 PM) Damn it! I can't do anything right! :banghead No that was good,
  4. QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 12:15 PM) Actually Payton threw the ball into the stands. Good catch file this one too
  5. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:58 AM) Hmmmm ... let's look at it this way. I live in western KY. If I made $50K here, there is no way I'd accept $60K to move to Chicago. It would cost me in the long run. And there are some city residents that would not take a $100,000 increase to move to Western Kentucky, they don't like rural. They would take less to live in a high cost area. I am totally lost in what we are discussing BTW, I love Kentucky and would move there in a minute after my kids finish school.
  6. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:45 AM) Wait! You disagree and agree in the same post? While under the influence of the koolaid, I disagree. Thinking of Shoe as a starter, I believe the five arms we have in the rotation are better than him. As a middle relief type guy, I don't want an unhappy guy riding the pine. Taking the koolaid straw from my lips, I remember the early season guy, and keep thinking he's another pre-WS E-Lo. I could see him stringing a season that would make us miss him. Make sense?
  7. Unfortunately these acts get you noticed, and highlighted on sports center. :headshake I always felt a silenced stadium was the best retort.

    QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:49 AM) Really? He's not taking credit for yours
  9. I always try and stop and realize that trades aren't about the past, it's about the future. I always liked Lee's upside. We'll compare in October.
  10. Where any of these guys signed with the "Maggs money"
  11. Every agent has that same situation. So people would want an agent to negotiate smaller contracts for them and convince them to take less money and play in Dallas because the taxes are lower. I want a guy who can get me the best deal possible, taking all factors into consideration. Where I live is important to me. I would prefer a place year round, not two homes for season and non season. I think Boras takes the heat for his clients a lot of the time. And I would want my agent to do that for me. Kind of a good guy - asshole deal. Would you also want a player who also settles for less on the field?
  12. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:38 AM) I am just talking about evading state taxes in TX. Beltran is going to make about $17 million a year which means in NY state he will pay $680,000 a year in just NY state income tax. That isn't counting the higher sales taxes, and if NYC has anykind of income tax, which I am sure they do. I haven't even gotten into cost of living, insurance, commute times, etc. Cut that at least in half for away games where he will pay taxes in those states. Federal statute prevents states from taxing you twice for the same earning. Even looking at the full number, and not taking into account other taxes or promotional opportunities, a Texas team offering $16,320,000 would be equal. Taxes are important. Players have mentioned that as one reason they didn't want to play in Canada. Some people are willing to pay top dollar to live in a first class city. Some prefer city lofts, some country estates.

    QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) It has nothing to do with how you perform your job, and everything to do with public perception. Look at it like this, if an 80 year old lady walks into your business for whatever reason, do you think she will approach the clean-cut, well dressed person, or the guy who looks like he fell out of Jim Rose's sideshow? If you are dropping your kids off for a camp of some sort, do you want your kids going to camp with a clean cut person, or a guy who looks like he will someday be a part of the Hells Angels? No matter what happens in the world, long hairs will always be associated with drugs, sex, and rock and roll. People have always been shocked when they find out I never did drugs. I didn't even drink for years, and have never "slept around", and have a much more tame existence than most everybody I know, but my looks turned me into a "bad guy". It's all perception, and first impressions rule over all. If you knew this was a Boy Scout Camp and the kids in question were all Eagle Scouts, would you change your opinion?
  14. Is that a little Hitler mustache?? LMAO
  15. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Just call it a hunch, but I think we'll regret not keeping Scott Schoeneweis. I don't know how and don't ask me to justify it, because I can't. Let's just look at this at the end of the season. Looking at out current rotation and drinking the WS Koolaid, I disagree. I thought Scott was a solid guy with some injuries that once healed would be solid again. I agree this could come back and haunt us.

    QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:27 AM) When I saw the thread title, that is exactly what I was thinking... I was wondering who would be the first to say it That's why I'm the Thread Head
  18. QUOTE(AstralSox @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:24 AM) Hell no, I'm not a greedy sonofab****. Boras = Evil He's almost single-handedly killing the game. (I know you weren't exactly talking tome, but still) For most players it isn't greed; it's respect and competing against their peers. If Alan, Bob, and Chuck all signed for $1,000,000 then they want a million. If they all signed for $5,000,000, that's the target. Imagine if your salary was written about, placed in a chart, and you could be the 79th highest paid player or walk onto the field as the #1 highest paid player? These guys are competitors. If you are around any, they will compete at anything.
  19. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:24 AM) OK ... Thanks. I'm more in tune to players than agents. Call it a weakness on my part. November to March, he is THE player in baseball.
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:23 AM) So he buys a condo downtown for less than he would pay in a month of taxes... There are easy ways around that stuff, esecially if you have a 7 year deal to play there... Cost of living could be a factor. But seriously when you are signing a $10million contract you can live anywhere. There are some quality of live issues that could move NY up or down depending on the individual. NY is a World Class City, one of the largest and most influential in the world. Some people enjoy that, others do not. Lennon choose to live in New York, not London, Sri Lanka, or Dallas. I never have cared to live in NYC, I prefer a smaller place.
  21. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) What? Do I have his name wrong? Whatever. Beltran's agent. Whatever his name is. Scott Boras or Scot Bor*ass as the mood dictates
  22. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:14 AM) And therein lies the problem. If you want to be technical about it, Beltran would have brought home more money in Texas, which has no state income tax, vs NY state. But since Borass can sell his secondary clients higher based on the per annum that Beltran got, this is a better deal for Borass, and guess where Beltran ended up. And that is dispite his love of Houston, his objections for NYC, and more money in Houston. Actually states have been very good at taxing out of towners as well. Not a big difference. Link

    QUOTE(Goldmember @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:14 AM) shhh...you just blew my cover... You know you have to make sigs for all the mods now
  24. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 11, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) When they do, they get criticized in the press. Look at Vazquez and Green. A lot of a player's preferences doesn't come out, but when it does Boras seems to just brush that aside. ARod signing with Texas is another example. I thought the ARod issues came later when the team couldn't spend more money to build a winner as they promised?? He does have a way to claim all the top players and those that think they are.
