  1. The Norelco Bear sledding through the snow on a Norelco electric razor head sled. And the TBS 24 Hour A Christmas Story Marathon
  2. Hence my point of government subsidizing the store prices. Wal-Mart, the civilian PX There are a lot of positions in our society that do not earn what they are worth. Military and inner city teachers who make a difference come to mind.
  3. Evil mentioned the assertion by some liberals that the military only attracts poor minorities. I don't believe that is quite true, but I do believe that it attracts some people with less choices than others. Ivy League or Iraq League? Where is Sterling Jefferson III going? Assembly line or Iraq line? Where is Juan Carlos Villareal going? Wars have been fought for centuries by the less privileged in every society, not just the US. When wealth and position collide with the military, the child becomes an officer or it makes world news. BTW, a glance at the stats show that blacks only make up 10% of the officers. I believe that could partially be explained by whites staying on longer and having enlisted as officers.
  4. And one of the problems with electric cars, from an environmental impact point of view, is it only shifts the point of pollution from the car to the electric plant. There are some marginal benefits in having one place to monitor and keep clean, but still it isn't as non-polluting as some people believe.
  5. Things must have changed. A customer of mine was retired Navy procurement and was responsible for the purchases at Great Lakes for a number of years. He explained their store space was rent free, only a portion of their utilities were charged to the store, the government negotiates lower rates than most retail stores (high volume customer), and they were not under shareholder pressure for profits. I wonder how many conservatives in the military would want the store privatized and perhaps run by Wal-Mart and charging Wal-Mart prices? It makes sense to allow military families to buy for less. Or else it would be even mroe compelling to give an across the board increase in military pay to cover the higher profit margin, which would go to pay the higher salaries, and the circle continues.
  6. According to conservatives against a draft, there is no shortage of recruits, then why spend $600,000,000 to recruit? Why does the Army need to sponsor a car? Here is the Army's demographics. http://www.armyg1.army.mil/hr/demographics...rofileWebVs.pdf 14.4% of our population is black, yet over 20% of the military is black. Maybe they are wasting their money sponsoring NASCAR. Perhaps the Chicago Opera House would be better. I assume that kids in Winnetka join the military at about the same rates as a kid from North Chicago, both North Shore suburbs.
  7. A wind farm isn't the nicest looking thing. Out on West Texas, along Route 10, is one of the worlds largest. Imagine miles and miles of turbines spinning. It is the biggest drawbacks to wind driven power. It is an eyesore. At least out there, only the armadillas and rattlesnakes care. There isn't a perfect method of generating power, the one perfect answer is less consumption. Whether that is more fuel efficient cars, better energy use at home, or more efficient manufacturing methods, it has to be done. Plus, as another thread pointed out, putting gas in your car just supports the middle east and all it's crazies. NIMBY is a universal human condition. Nobody wants a prison, garbage dump, power plant, manufacturing plant, etc. in their backyard. How many lock them up for life conservatives want to own a home next to the maximum security prison?

    Keyhole

There are some amazing resources out there. A friend took advatage of a satelite soil survey to locate a three acre pond on his property. The clay he was looking for was dead accurate on the map. I believe the county ag extension provided the map.
  9. But I'm telling y'all, DeLay will win this one. Nothing is purer than a Texas Republican.
  10. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20041126/D86JITK00.html $600,000,000 on recruiting Military spending is sacred, must not criticize military spending, military spending is sacred
  11. That Bears team was a texbook example of each player fitting perfectly together. McMahon could not have taken an 8-8 team and made them a Super Bowl threat, but he was exactly perfect for that offense. The Bears have had some "interesting" QBs through the years. Can anybody say Bobby Douglas? McMahon, T-Zak, and Flutie. Can you believe which one is still playing?
  12. Not everyone can shop at government supported PXs without sales tax WalMart - the PX for the rest of the world
  13. Nuke, Back in the 1960s the environment was much more poilluted than today. We risked major health hazards, which would have been even more expensive to solve. You may believe that we do not need clean air and clean water, but I do. It does a great disservice to call those people envirnomental wackos. If you want to complain about other people flamebaiting, why not stop yourself? The conservatives said we couldn't put air scrubbers on every smokestack, we did. The conservatives said we couldn't reduce auto emmisions without building $100,000 cars, we did. The conservatives said we couldn't reduce polluted discharge into our waterways, we did. The Chicago River actually burned less than a generation ago. Yes there is a cost to a cleaner environment. I live near Mexico and see first hand what not spending the money and enforcing the laws does to the environment. You've been to some pretty crappy places yourself. Do you really want to dismiss the wackos and be more like those places?
  14. It was a nice thing, unfortunately the President is not allowed to do nice things, everything he does, is weighed against the backdrop of politics. True for both sides. And predictably, Presidents tend to do more "nice things" as their re-election gets closer and closer.
  15. Flutie -- Hail Mary Jordan -- Buzzer Beater Gibson -- Walk Off Best I can remember . . .
  16. I thought the publicity part was landing on the carrier with the victory banner, not his Thanksgiving Day drop in. And Nuke to be fair, the conservative talk show hosts criticized the press for not making his Thanksgiving Day plans bigger air play, now they want it played down. And around and around we go.
  17. Is there a natural tie in with yesterday's pork barrel thread? A couple of thousand per person on a personal card added to $7.3 trillion as a nation, plus everything we have promised ourselves through Social Security and other programs. Remind me how we "won" the cold war? Wasn't it the USSR not being able to pay their bills? I love shopping malls at Christmas time. The hustle the bustle, the voices singing out feliz navidad.
  18. Michigan and USC are in the BCS by winning their conference. I am predicting that Oklahoma wins the Big 12, leaving Texas a possible at-large. Other potential teams for the two "at large" spots are Georgia and California. California, Georgia, Texas and Utah. The two will probably come from that group.
  19. The tension builds in hockey and anytime the action is around the net, people are either holding their breath or screaming one-time. The walk off depends on who is hitting, Frank Thomas where it is possible or some NL pitcher when it's not, makes a huge difference. and BTW, Buzzer beater -- Jordan over Cleveland is the best.
  20. AT&T The next best thing to being there. Election's over, no more campaigning. Which is why I would prefer to have presidents voted to single 6-year terms. He ain't Bob Hope entertaining the Troops every year
  21. But all of these stimulate the economy. They employ Americans who may otherwise be unemployed, they keep some companies from closing. Imagine if we took that much out of the economy, Bush's economic recovery score would be lower. We'll just borrow a few billion more from some foreign bank.
  22. When did I become the family IT guy In the past couple days I bought a new family computer Ripped apart the old familt computer for the hard drive and the CD burner and bought from Newegg a new mobo, case, CPU, memory etc. So know the fun begins. No sound from the upgraded computer. After reattaching all the wires to the mobo, and troubleshooting all the hardware, I realize the software was set to mute Now I cannot get any of the computers to share the printer. I've been around and around trying to make it work but so far no dice. And how is everyone else's Thanksgiving?
  23. The guy shouldn't be charged with any crimes if the report is accurate. The only way to build a case would be to say he should have stopped when they started shooting and by continuing etc. But that would be very lame and no jury in North America would confict. Still, I am thankfull he is alive to raise his daughters instead of a victim of robbery and murder. When will the criminals begin saying they shot in self defense.

It also has a rollercoaster feel to the background, which really fits.
