  1. Setting up the excuses for not signing more free agents.
  2. The other thing that sucks in all this is the countries that are subsidizing the steel, if they fall on hard times, come running to the good ol USA for help. So their government stops the subsidies, their people lose jobs and are hungry, and we send them aid. :headshake
  3. The thank you is paying for part of my washing machine, computer, car, stove, circuit breaker box, etc. If you knew that raising steel prices would save 1,000 steel mill jobs but cost 4,000 secondary manufacturing jobs, would you add the tariff and save the steel mill jobs? In my corner of the world, we have no steel mills but we have dozens and dozens of manufacturers who use steel. Rising steel prices are a major problem for people in my area. Many of these companies are on the edge of moving to China as it is. Rising steel prices cuts into the available labor dollars as well and could force these companies to look for cost savings. Guess what, China there they go. I happen to agree with you on the end result, but a different course of action. The correct thing to do is eliminate all subsidies and let the market decide. We will probably lose some jobs overall, but if we are to trust in capitalism, it is the correct path. Sometimes there is a price to pay.
  4. No, I am arguing that any athlete who fights for every dollar is not being a greedy SOB, he is just being competitive and doing exactly what almost every other American would do. I believe in fighting for every cent (on both sides) then shaking hands and living up to the contract. Would it be a good decision to give Maggs 20% of the payroll? Probably not. It worked for the Marlins and Pudge, but I don't think we could catch that same lightning. Are we moving forward by digging yet another pot hole to fill another? Probably not. And really it isn't worth arguing about, we are at least six years away from our once every 10-15 year trip to the playoffs. I just do not think Maggs had major surgery, something that his career may depend on, in some backalley in Vienna, with some Doctor he pulled out of the phone book. I believe Maggs doesn't have a US_centric view of the world. Americans tend to believe that the US has the best in everything, that we are the only humans capable of higher thought. I see this with the Mexican nationals I am friends with. They would much rather be treated by Mexican Doctors than some US hospital where they are looked down on.
  5. Every world body wants a piece of the US. We're the rich guy on the block. And we're going into debt to help these people. I was just pointing out that what is bad for one industry may be great for another. In this case there are more jobs using steel than producing it. We may save 100 steel producing jobs, but lose hundreds more in manufacturing products from the steel. Take for instance electric motors. There is a lot of steel in electric motors. Using cheap steel, American motor manufacturers could compete with foreign made motors. With higher steel prices driving up the cost of their motors, they couldn't compete. So now you should tag a tariff on electric motors. Many industries use electric motors in their products. The white goods manufacturers especially use biggins in washing machines, refrigerators, etc. In fact it is a big part of the cost. To keep NAFTA countries competitive, you need to add a tariff on all finished goods where steel is a major component. Of course it is consumers who pay for all this in the end. The whole point is that some government, to help their steel industry, unfairly subsidized steel prices. In effect they were paying for part of whatever American's bought that was made of steel. I consider that a thank you for us bailing the world out of every tragedy since WW2.
  6. Has George been funny since Nixon was in office? :headshake
  7. From Media Week take it with a grain or two of salt. They obviously have a dog in this fight. Still it makes for interesting reading. It also points out how by banding together, individuals amplify their voices. Should someone's opinion be somehow different if they join together as part of a group? Do these groups bring in individuals that really aren't that strong in their beliefs?
  8. Just remember with tarrifs there are winners and losers. We may have saved a few steel producer jobs, but the companies that use the steel are screwed. Those companies all of a sudden saw huge increases in the cost of their raw materials and began losing finished good orders to overseas companies. There are no easy solutions. There are consequences to our actions. Just slapping tarrifs on steal causes problems for other people.
  9. As part of some sweeping marriage reform bill, Ashcroft eliminated the Tooth Fairy
  10. You would think any red blooded American like Maggs would not trust any foreign Doctor. My God do they even have medical schools outside the US? Maybe it is because American Doctors would be compelled to hold a press conference, against Maggs wishes, and tell every detail of the surgery. We would know so much more if an American Doctor performed the surgery. I'll bet he went to Vienna because those Doctors are forbidden to discuss a patient's condition without the patient's consent. What better way to keep it secret that to go to a foreign Doctor. That also wouldn't raise as many eye brows as if he just went into an American Doctor.

That would apply to every military death. Every cop, every firefighter, every teacher, bus driver, or delivery worker. Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We rid our society of problems and mistakes by making ourselves aware of them. Perhaps this morning, some inventor is puzzeling over why communications failed. He was have the next advancement in military communications technology.
  13. Depends on what holes we open up.
  14. It's all part of the chain. A guy out of work thinks a guy making $6 shoudln't b****, he has a job. Someone working two minimum wage jobs thinks someone earning $30,000 is greedy for b****ing about not making $40,000. The guy making $100,000 thinks the guy making $250,000 is an idiot for complaining about his stock options. I posted this once before. I want players who are competitive in everything. I've been around enough athletes in a couple sports and they all can tell you what other guys in their position are making and what their stats are. It isn't about how much money they are making, it's about are they making more than the other guy. Most of these guys would be happier making $2,000,000 if they were #1 in salary at their position, than making $4,000,000 and being 26th for their position. They are competitors. Don't ask them to check that at the negotiation table. Maggs gambled that he could get more later and will lose. I really do not care one way or the other. A healthy Maggs makes this a better team. We can dig another pot hole to fill the ones at SS and lead off. But we'll have a guy hitting 30-40 points lower in right, with less proven talent. Y'all can keep wishing and thinking that going a couple steps back will move them forward. Maybe someday it will work, but not in my lifetime.
  15. I would assume they could offer arbitration based on passing a physical. If he accepts, he would have to pass the physical. It seems that the player is holding a better hand than the owners in this case. As a side note, and this probably doesn't apply to contract employees, most states will protect workers from wholesale inquisitions into a person's health. Basically the employer needs to prove that whatever they are asking for is a requirement to do the job. For example, if they ask someone to lift a 50 pound box before being hired, they must show that the job routingly requires lifting 50 pound boxes. They could not use that test to avoid hiring petite women or men. What gets interesting in this case is the employee has already been declared by team Doctors to be unable to work. The season is over, there is no "work" for the worker to perform. His contract is ending. What bearing does his health have on fullfilling this contract? Since the club would be making an offer, is the player obligated to even hear the offer? Let's say that the club was considering an offer to Beltran. Does Beltran have to take a physical for any team that wants him to, or can he be selected in who he works out for? I assume he can work out, or not, based on who he wants to sign with.

Tell them you really miss them and want to spend every waking moment with them. Make up a boyfriend or a girlfriend Ask them to double date at New Year's Eve with WLUP & Hairbangers Ball I would never suggest this to a guy, but why not try the truth?

Let me see if I understand how he has been used by the media. They cover him entering the military. People thought it was heroic and wanted to read the story, it boosted circulations and they "used" him to sell newspapers, magazines, and increase viewers. Of course if they hadn't covered it, they would have been ignoring a positive military story and been criticized for that. He is killed in action and they cover the event and everything that went along with it. people were interested, consider him a hero. By publishing his story, it sold newspapers, and they "used" him again. Of course if they didn't cover his death, they would have been accused of ignoring an American hero and playing politics. Now the death has been ruled as being caused by friendly fire. People are still interested in his story, and again it sold newspapers, increased viewership, and he was being used. Of course if the ignored the story, they would have been accused of not telling the whole story.
  18. my guess would be that the team examined him and declared him unable to play for the rest of the season. That happened to coincide with the end of his contract. I do not believe they have a right to examine someone in order to *offer* them a contract. They could make the offer contingent on passing a physical, which is a standard clause.

try posting in SL&P It only works if someone else has created a log in and wishes to share it. For example if you submitted your user name and password to this site, anyone with bugmenot could log into here and start posting. Using bugmenot and firefox you just right mouse click and choose the bugmenot option.
  20. God I hope that wanting to make more money, doesn't catch on with anyone else, then we're really in trouble. Soon average guys and gals will be leaving companies for bigger paychecks somewhere else. Then the American way of life is over. Start with a company and work there all your life and never complain that's the American way. Greedy assholes wanting to leave a job for another one that pays better :fyou anyone who does that.
  21. That was one of my favorite rides, that and the Maryville Academy Midnight Run. Sad
  22. As the contract was written, there wasn't another company in the world that could compete. Now if they split that bid package into specific areas, they could have found a group of companies to each compete in their specific areas. I am not surprised that the White House favored Halliburton for this work. If they thought Haliburton sucked, then they are really stupid for picking the CEO for V.P. Therefor, if they respect the work he did as evident by Halliburton, they should have felt comfortable awarding them the contract. Plus, they are a Texas company Haliburton and NASA; Bush, Chaney, and De Lay, getting it done for the Lone Star State And all this border security is awesome as well. Lots of spending on the Texas border.

It is a credit to our military that more servicemen and women are not killed in non combat accidents. The travel alone, the millions of miles of driving, setting up cities in the middle of no where, all the cooking, etc. Combat accidents are also few and far between, at least the ones we hear about. I give a lot of credit to their training and skill. Unfamilar terrain, poor communication conditions (not equipment) nerves, etc. all came into play here. I also wonder, if intelligence is so important, why he didn't have a chance to "surrender". As far as Tillman being a hero because he had a choice for a lucrative career or service and he chose service. I don't believe what he did was any more heroic than Juan Gonzalez from Mission, TX. who enlisted.
  24. I am a little confused about this. What happens if grandma Bernstein gets busted in Cairo with 5 oz of explosives? Seems like someone could be in for a difficult time in any country that practices Napoleonic law, guilty until proven innocent.
