  1. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) I'm with you on the looting, but what about the right to peacefully protest or freedom of the press down there? It was all taken away by that force. And replaced by looting and rioting. I'm not seeing peaceful protests. I'm seeing a portion of the community, that probably does not represent the mainstream population using this as a chance to loot and break laws. I also see some people justifying at and believing it is ok. I disagree as did a long line of civil rights leaders.
  2. QUOTE (zenryan @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 06:34 PM) You made similar comments in the Trayvon Martin thread. It's pretty obvious you go around looking to be offended. From my many glimpses intoLostFan's personal life, that just isn't accurate. Not that you would necessarily know that, I'm just trying to offer a little help in understanding POV's.
  3. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 10:54 AM) I didn't realize this many people still washed dishes by hand. I'd hate life with out my dishwasher. There are just two of us, our dishwasher takes over a week to fill.
  4. We use the "sponge on a handle filled with soap" thingy. It automatically applies soap, uses less water, and keeps them very clean. BTW, don't confuse the suds with the soap. Manufacturers add a sudsing agent because people are use to seeing suds. You really don't want the soap and water to separate. What is best is the water and soap form a solution not an emulsion (for the chemistry folks). The Boy Scout three bucket method is scrap clean, bucket one has hot soapy water, bucket two is the rinse water (heated), and bucket three is a weak bleach solution).
  5. Perhaps because the CDC is one of the world's greatest medical facilities equipped to handle severe cases and the knowledge they can acquire from working directly with a patient may save thousands of lives down the road? Ebola samples have routinely been brought to that facility, the biggest difference here is they are inside a living person.
  6. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 17, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) Do cops get to ignore laws? Neither side gets to ignore laws and our justice system. But the punishment for cops breaking the law can't be unending looting, violence, and lawlessness. Protesting against someone breaking the law by breaking the law is hypocrisy on the grandest scale.
  7. The more the community ignores laws and the harder they make it to serve and protect their community from looters the more empathy I have for the police.
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 14, 2014 -> 03:53 PM) As he should...oddly enough, my first thoughts when I read it were, don't get your panties all bunched up.
  9. Reading through the thread and the speculation about who may have used PEDs gets me weary. I remember a couple doctors at my old country club speculating like sports fans not necessarily doctors, suggesting that a guy that tore a bicep muscle must have been using steroids. They sounded very convincing. Odd injury that almost never happens with baseball players, etc. When I realized they were speaking about Frank Thomas, I just laughed. I like it when guys are caught and it is proven, the speculation just kind of bugs me at this point. Maybe that's what MLB wants.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 9, 2014 -> 09:32 AM) One thing that messes with my head though is when I'm walking the course and there are people in carts behind me. I can't stand the notion of holding people up, even if there is a group directly in front of me that I am waiting on. For whatever reason I just cannot concentrate. This was an issue at my old club. Everyone was pointing to the walkers as holding up play. With a bit of objective evidence it was clearly fivesomes (allowed in the south) playing wolf (a betting game) that were the slowest. It shut up a lot of people.
  11. I've watched the video a couple times and from the limited amount of information available, including his history, I'm in the "I wanted to teach him a lesson to mind his elders, but I didn't intend to kill him" camp. What is key would be the accident that preceded this one.
  12. As I have always believed Managers get too much credit and too much blame. Ed, I met Bevington a few seasons ago while he was managing in an independent league that came to town. I came by the dugout and he saw the Sox cap and he wasn't certain what the reaction would be. He was very nice. He asked if I was going to ask about the bullpen moment, I laughed and said no, that had been beat to death. He still gave the impression he was just killing time between drinks.
  13. Does anyone believe a system that places this much power with the owners and almost nothing with the high school athlete is fair? There should be some way for the kid to be playing mlb organization ball. Boras' system is about as good as it gets.
  14. My golf book collection has about 25 volumes. I have all of Pelz, Rotella, Penick, etc. One of the ways I improved my tempo, which was hurting me was playing with guys with great tempo and watching video of Ernie Els.
  15. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 27, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) Tex, did you even read my reply to that to ss, or are you just mono-focused as well? Canada is different because they DON"T send over people to take farm jobs, welfare etc., and don't have their government encouraging it either. They don't have Canadian drug lords shooting at border patrol agents across rivers. They send troops to fight beside us. But despite all that, I would still be opposed if they were sending 30k unaccompanied kids a day over the border. it would just be so unexpected that it may take an extra moment to notice it. No, Canada sends over people to take jobs that pay well over minimum wage that Americans actually want. Judging the refugees by the crime they are fleeing is kind of weird, wouldn't you say? If you are fleeing cartels and drug lords and want to work job in agriculture and manual labor the US doesn't want you. If you are just wanting to come and take a primo job from an American? Welcome! War help? Hispanics make up the ethnic group with the most Medal of Honors, that would be ahead of the Canadians. http://www.prb.org/Publications/Articles/2...USMilitary.aspx http://spotlightepnews.com/2011/05/19/hisp...ion-needs-them/
  16. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 08:26 PM) I might give Canada a break for a bit, as they are almost like our 51st state, but even that would get old pretty fast. Try to explain what makes Canada different without saying white, English speaking, and provided safe haven to Americans avoiding the Vietnam draft. Long continuous border? Same Backs us in every war? Same Allows American companies to build factories and employ laborers for less wages? Mexico Another point to consider is immigration has increased into countries like Mexico, Nicaragua, Belize, and others. People are trying to escape the real hell holes. Not everyone is trying to reach the US. Some believe only really lazy people looking for handouts are willing to walk 2,000 miles for an crappy welcome and an uncertain future. Walking 2,000 miles and they are termed lazy and not wanting to work. Seriously?
  17. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 25, 2014 -> 04:23 PM) When you have no money, no friends/family, you don't speak the language, you have no home or place to go, it's analogous to "the wild." Jesus Christ. All of the people I am discussing have family or friends and the ability to buy a bus ticket. Their court dates are always further out than 48 hours. INS is releasing them only if they have bus tickets. Sacred Heart is only helping those that have bus tickets. Not speaking the language? They don't speak your language, did the European immigrants when they arrived? There is a much greater support group available to Spanish speaking families than to the Italians, Germans, Poles, etc. have immigrated. Have you thought about my Texas, with all these immigrants from Mexico and other points in Central and South America survived the Great Recession so well? Perhaps our economy expanded to accommodate people needing to buy food, rent a place to live, and work? Japan's economy struggled when their population growth stagnated.
  18. QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 11:01 AM) If you did this with Sox fans, they'd be b****ing about how the fake players weren't any good Yeah, ain't hat the truth. But if they followed Future Sox on twitter they would be the most knowledgeable fans out there and would immediately set the record straight.
  19. With my hometown becoming the epicenter of the current refugee crisis I have an opportunity to be behind the lines so to speak. Here is an insider's look. First off from the front lines the people coming across the border can be split into two very distinct groups. The folks who come across and turn themselves in and request refugee status and the people crossing and not turning themselves in. The not turning themselves in group are the gang/cartel members whom everyone involved wants arrested and returned to Mexico or points further south. Governor Perry has ordered the National Guard in to help. Any help that allows Border Patrol to better go after this group should be welcomed by everyone. The first group, those requesting refugee status can be divided into two groups. Accompanied children and unaccompanied children. The unaccompanied children disappear into the system and are being housed somewhere. My experiences and the experiences of friends of mine are with the accompanied minors group. This group is mostly mothers and their children although we do see some fathers. Of course there are a few families with two parents, but not that many. After INS has processed the families, those with some connection in the US, family, friends, job offers, etc. are given bus tickets and a ride to the bus terminal. At the bus terminal Sacred Heart Church in McAllen picks the refugees up in a small bus and takes them to the church for humanitarian aid. The numbers have been steady at 150 to 200 per day. When new families arrive everyone, volunteers and other refugees, stops for a moment and cheers and applauds to greet them. Unless you are just a hardcore uncaring person you can't help but feel good about humanity when you see the smile and relief on people's faces and knowing that other people with nothing to gain are unselfishly helping them. It is the first time the refugees see a welcoming and friendly face. A volunteer is assigned to the family and will stay with them throughout the process. There is a toy corral for the kids to play while the adults are being helped. One of the saddest sights are the children still too traumatized to play. They continue to cling to their parents. The church has been totally changed to assist in the effort. The parish hall is turned over to this effort. The parking lot has dorms, shower facilities, and a portable medical truck. The families are fed a meal of soup and bread. Earlier a more substantial meal was provided but it proved too much for their systems after not eating much while on the road and they were throwing the food up. So soup it is. A massive amount of clothes are stacked on folding tables. Something I had not considered was Americans have been donating a lot of clothes but they are mostly larger sizes, the refugees are smaller. After clothing is selected the refugees are directed to a shower facility, for most of the people this is their first shower in weeks or months. Their clothes are almost always thrown away. The most critical need I saw was for underwear and bras in smaller sizes. After a shower there is the medical screening. Despite what the media is reporting the medical issues are mostly the kind of issues associated with long hikes through hot weather. Yes, out of the thousands and thousands more serious issues are found, but it has been very rare. Also, Sacred Heart is only seeing refugees who have been processed by INS.There are dorms set up for the people to get some sleep before heading to the bus station. When it is time to leave to catch their bus they are provided sandwiches and snacks for their journey. The destinations are all over the map. I pray for those crossing Arizona and other spots in the country that are not welcoming to refugees. A friend of mine who is volunteer at Sacred Heart mentioned hearing this story from a volunteer which explained why he was there helping. It is the story of Jews trying to escape Nazi Germany aboard the SS St. Louis and being turned away by Cuba and the United States. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27373131
  20. By that calculation my wife and I could be paying as much as $2300 per month. We bought a house for half that.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) Or watching his bullpen
  22. Our district's Director of Golf is a PGA Professional and my interview was pretty solid. He has been replacing the coaches that are just there for the stipend with coaches that are golf guys with some experience. For example I'm replacing a guy that would rather be coaching tennis. I'd rather be coaching golf than cross country or soccer (my two other choices). What do y'all think of my three main focus areas? Pre-shot routines both physical and mental. Hit your shot and forget about it, start thinking about your next shot in a positive way. No walking to the ball thinking I suck, that was a terrible shot, etc. We can work on improving those shots during practice. At the ball visualize the shot, visualize the swing, and start your physical preparation. They can't necessarily swing like a scratch player but they can think like one. About half or more of my players come from the magnet school next door to our main campus so they should take to this pretty easily. Establish a scoring zone where you are thinking either holing it out or an up and down. For better HS players that may be 75 yards out, for other players 25 yards. Focusing most of my instructional time on this scoring zone. I know they will practice the long stuff on their own. It's practicing scoring that will be a bigger factor in lowering their scores. The head of the golf booster club is very good at creating and using Excel. She offered to be my statistician for the season. I will be tracking their rounds, both practice and tournament to establish empirical data and where the individual player needs to concentrate their practice time. My HS coach didn't do much more than drive the van and fill out the lineups. The above worked well for my middle school team (minus the stats), I am assuming with modifications it will work in HS. It's modeled after work by Pelz, Rotella, and a lifetime of playing almost good golf. (I've been as low as a five at my old club).
  23. I stayed at the same hotel as the Red Sox in Arlington back in 2004 or so. I was surprised how subdued they were trying to blend in, not what I expected. I did mention that I was a Sox fan -- White Sox I do recall trying to drunk dial Kap to invite him over without success. I couldn't find his number in my phone, silly me I had it under his real name not Kapkomet
  24. The the murder rates lower where there are a lot of gang activity?
