  1. Sidebar http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/1999/03/ital-m06.html I wonder how Italians responded when this verdict came in.
  2. When SS2k5 ran for the school board I read his materials and would have voted for him if I lived in his district. My first test is simple, is the cadidate sincere in wanting to help the district he serves. SS2k5 clearly is. Can I share the goals the candidate has? In that case I could. The method to get there may be an issue, but the goals are similar. If we look at the goals, most Americans want the same thing. Opportunity, safety, and security for all. Neither group wants children starving, neither group wants people to die from a lack of health care, neither group wants the country to be attacked, neither group wants people to live in fear, and I could go on. The path to get there is the problem. If we do everything possible to reduce the number of guns in our society, if the police could instantly arrest and confiscate any guns they find, gun crimes would be reduced. If more honest people owned guns and used them to protect themselves, gun related victims could have a fighting chance. Either path could work.
  3. I think there is a simpler, grass roots, way of bringing this back together. Most of the people here overlap on issues. Even the hard core Dem and hard core GOP types here agree on some issues. For example I wrote to my Dem congressman, my GOP senators, and Dem President, that I supported the GOP initiatives on immigration. I believe it is a nice step forward. Not perfect, but a more than meeting half way by the GOP. I told my congressman and my president that if they significantly caused a deal to fall through it would leave me looking more seriously at GOP candidates. Will it have an affect? Probably not if it is just me. Probably if more people also wrote expressing the same sentiment.
  4. Wow. The mother of all bumps. A thread by Steff. How nostalgic.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 7, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) Or it could be that there are real legitimate and deep disagreements over both the proper size/scope of public policy and what that policy should be! I agree there are areas like that. But currently there is zero agreement on anything. That situation is manufactured.
  6. There can't be agreement between the parties. That doesn't "sell". It doesn't bring in campaign dollars, doesn't inspire fear. It's like a s***ty card game. They deal the issues and you have to play that card.

I had to cancel golf practice for today. 40 degrees and possible rain.

16 years ago, the last time I was there, Alpine Valley was a superior experience. Nicer facilites, more and better runs.

I am laughing at my budget. I'm seeing rings for under $300 that seem really nice. I was thinking $750 to $1,000 for mine. I don't really like jewelry of any kind. I've never consistently worn a watch, the only ring I'll ever really wear is a wedding band. It is also interesting to me some of the design guidelines we have for the rings. Must be camping and swimming compatible. My wife doesn't want a diamond solitaire, so we're looking at a channel design. Something low profile. She will probably not take it on our summer trips, so we may get matching bands as well. I pitched the dinosaur bone and meteorite design, that may be happening for me, NOT for her.
  10. I lived through that era. I'm not a fan of the '83 uni.
  11. Yesterday SS2k5 posted elsewhere about his opposition to a GOP policy that was one of the best reasoned, well articulated arguments I have read in a while. I hope he shares it here. (hint hint) Also, I was mostly in agreement with the GOP proposals on immigration. Hmm, SS2k5 agreeing with the left and my agreeing with the right. Is this a harbinger of doom?

I've read that several of the new metals will shatter on impact. And like a cell phone screen, it sometimes is just bad or good luck.

I was looking at some of the wood inlay designs last night. I like those. I also am thinking, since these are relatively cheap, to buy a three or four. Hell, I could buy 10 for what I am spending on hers. I also saw ones that leave a little indention on your finger when you take them off. There are some really cool rings out there.

We're shopping for new wedding bands and I am warming up to the idea of not getting gold, it seems so old fashioned. So what are you wearing? My previous ring was a tricolor gold woven pattern. So anything that remotely looks like that makes me puke. I've been searching some sites, bluenile.com etc. Where else should I look?

  19. It's a chicken and egg argument. I agree that one of the (probably) unintended consequences of a statistical analysis of baseball players is they can be used to "sell and player". At the extreme, in my old guy opinion, is rejecting the idea that the players around you, the locker room, the coaching, are somehow not important. Some people seem to believe that if every player just focused on producing the best stats possible for himself that a team can be successful. That rejects a whole theory of sports and what it teaches us about character, sacrifice, team play, cooperation, etc. teIam?
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Quite right slick. Since only a couple people here could even possibly get the reference I had to tip my hat and quote this.
  21. One fundamental of every sports league is an understanding that every team should try to win every game. Once that gets ignored the sport becomes tarnished and nothing more than a scripted reality show.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 01:47 PM) I don't remember this time at all. Seriously?

The move went great. The only issue was when I paid one of her new neighbors to help carry her stuff up a flight of stairs. My back and legs were worth the $20. I don't know why she was complaining Brian has the most beautiful eyes, trim, and cracked a couple jokes. Maybe he'll take the twenty and buy her a drink and everyone wins.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) lol. Abreu sez Hola. Dunn's shadow is so large it covers the #1 free agent.
  25. At it's best the 'buster produces some great discusions. Way back the board was dominated by conservatives. Somewhere around 2010 or 2011 we swung from solidly conservative to mostly liberal. I'm not certain if it was by post count or by the number of posters. I suspect it's more a post count thing. (liberal members post more). As we crossed over, there was a time when I really enjoyed reading the debates. When it was one sided, either side, I lost interest. I wish there was a formula to recreate that.
