  1. I actually played in a mini golf tournament. Scary how serious some of the players were. One match needed a referee to follow them along. I lost to some guy that never played a regular round of golf in his life, grabbed a beer, and laughed the rest of the afternoon watching some jerks get all pissed off.
  2. I always felt the pools were similar to being an actuary. Which is, imnsho, the coolest area of accounting and management.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 10:30 PM) That's called the intro, DJ's talk over the music until the lyrics start. It's actually very hard to perfect. When I was a DJ, I could never do it right. Where you using records or carts? We had a little count down thing to tell us when the lyrics started so we could nail it everytime.

  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 06:54 PM) Now, people around here got a longer Christmas break, because of my best friend Mr Lake Effect. We use to start in early August and give a three week break and a lot more days off. The Texas legislation got involved and the earliest start date is now around August 25, so we shortened some vacations.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 06:52 PM) It just goes to show you the idea of the "Big tent" is a joke. Its a big tent as long as you agree with everything they tell you to agree with. Didn't he leave the "big tent"? Are you suggesting he left because the party forced him out? Wait, of course, because GOPs are all about integrity and doing was is right, not about what is best for themselves*. *A tip of the hat towards Kap for inspiring me.
  7. So many, the one I like to tell the most was a game in Milwaukee when The Brewers were an AL team. Oz had one of those games where he crushed the ball, but always right at someone. We were sitting a row back from the Sox on-deck circle in seats we got from Selig Leasing. After his third at bat, and just crushing another ball, but getting robbed by a diving center fielder, Oz comes running towards us, takes his helmet off with both hands and in one motion just flings it into the dugout and screams Fock this mother focking Game!! To which I called out, "his English is certainly getting better". Sox won with a late rally so all was well in the universe. In Chicago, my bachelor party part 1 which included a lot of relatives, a charter bus, and results I can't even remember.

  12. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 03:52 PM) Damn, there isn't a single open drive-in within 25 miles of where I grew up. What a lost bit of Americana. Damn you, another internet black hole to lose a few hours at . . .

I had been on GEnie and CompuServe prior to AOL starting. I was around when they would do Road Tours, real world events. I remember the celebration when they reached 1,000,000 subscribers. Which was an amazing number at the time. Prior to GEnie, I racked up some huge long distance bills logging into ExecPC in Milwaukee and The Well in San Francisco.
  14. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 04:23 PM) He said it, not me. He didn't say "never" but of course, republicans are a disaster and democrats are awesome. (and yes, it's the cheerleader thread, I know). From Rex I don't see your analysis coming from this. It sounds like both the GOP and Griffith have lost in this switch. Seems fair to say that might cause some people to think twice before leaping.
  15. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) I was trying to figure out the justification for that as well. All that comes to mind is that they've been victims of state-sponsored terror. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubana_Flight_455 Here is a page on the subject from the Council on Foreign Relations: http://www.cfr.org/publication/9359/state_sponsors.html Fascinating reading. And just to get a few people here excited I thought only Clinton pardoned criminals As Kap would say "They all do it".
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) So I was reading this article about the new security measures, and was surprised to see this: Cuba? State sponsor of terrorism? Yet anyone from Cuba who "touches the sand" is automatically welcome here. Doesn't make sense.
  17. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 04:04 PM) It was great when Specter did it, now it's "chaos" and no one will ever do it again (turn from Dem to GOP). He lost staff too. Party switching will always be rare, but will always happen. As Rex noted earlier, (not the post you quoted), this has probably not worked out. But your idea that no one will ever do it again, I think is a touch kaperbolic™

QUOTE (SnB @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 02:44 PM) when AOL 3.0/4.0/5.0/etc would come out and it would take 3 hours to install it. But AOL was a never ending source of floppies!
  21. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 4, 2010 -> 01:18 PM) Well sure, but I think a party change for a Congress person is probably similar to an administration change, though maybe not quite as dramatic. There would be a shift. It probably depends on position. I knew a couple people that went to work on congressional staffs after college and they wound up working for Dems and Reps at various times. They compared it to working for Coke or Pepsi. If you like the soft drink wars, it doesn't matter which side you are on. One became a bit of an expert on telecommunications issues and was in some demand during the days immediately before and after the break up of Ma Bell. His pov was he was educating on the issues and what they did was out of his control. I have also heard, from a former co-worker that about 1/3 of the staff tends to stay when a new representative comes in, no matter what the party is. Handling requests from constituents is about the same no matter which party is involved. All this leads to my suspicion that they have been promised jobs with the Dems and this may have been a well orchestrated move. But that's my "they all do it" paranoia.
