  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 11, 2008 -> 05:48 AM) There's where we disagree. I think if any of these guys are still with the White Sox next year, pretty much every player and maybe even more importantly, Ozzie and KW, won't forget they would rather go home than have to stay in a nice hotel, hang out with their teammates and watch a playoff game their team is playing on a huge television in the clubhouse. As far as your, "they aren't getting paid" argument, its the playoffs, every player is in the same boat. Their salaries have been paid. This argument isn't about the fans. As a huge fan, It wouldn't have bothered me if they told these 3 to go home after Charlotte's season ended, costing at least Broadway $65k which is what he was paid to sit around and not play for a month. It wouldn't have bothered me if the Sox told the 3 to go home after they won the division, but that isn't what happened. The most important opinions are of White Sox players and all reports say their departures were well-noted. Even Farmio and Stone, 2 guys who played MLB, travel with the Sox and would have a better perspective of this than you or me, were perplexed that going home would even be a consideration for these guys. My not getting paid is more to the point that "it's a business". You can talk about bonding and being a team mate, but IMHO that lasts until the next contract negotiations. Thomas came to the park during 2005, yet he still was not offered a new contract? Did KW not see him? He was loyal to his team mates for years, even accepting lower contracts to play for the Sox. He was arguably the greatest player to play for the Sox, AND flew in special to be with his teammates, and the following year was playing for Oakland. So we know how unimportant it is if you are a HoF caliber player to be around the team and bonding. Clearly these guys are not HoF material. So now let's look how important it will be for a AAAA player. Setting aside a few things, and for the sake of the discussion. I'll agree with all you said, now, let's put this in a practical manner. How much better will Broadway now have to pitch to make the team over someone who stayed? IF during Spring Training Logan or Broadway are putting up better numbers compared to guys who were in the clubhouse, will people here argue that they should spend more time in AAA and leave the roster spots to the guys that stayed? I've never heard an argument around here for keeping someone with less stats than someone playing better because they are better ass patters and cheer harder for the teammates. If that were the case, we would have a whole lot more Anderson love. Bottom line, by Spring Training, all this is forgotten. Guys are going to have to earn their roster spots by their play on the field, not by donning cheerleader outfits and patting asses in the clubhouse.
  2. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 10:39 PM) I'm not one of them. I'm odd. I was surprised as well. But realization is one part of a cure.
  3. This is about the liberal media bias trying to make Palin look bad. In this case, literally. In fact, anything they do that is not an advertisement or glorifies the GOP, is part of their bias. And following up on NSS, you have to look before Reagan to find a true small government Republican. Reagan taught the GOP that cutting taxes *and* continue spending is a great formula to be loved and reelected. He also taught them how nice it is to be "teflon". Except now instead of building a better no stick frying pan, they discredit the food that goes in. Quicker and easier.
  4. Forbes Article Along with the "Stock Market Game" that some schools use in the classroom, it seems that we should be doing even more to prepare our kids to be adults.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 10, 2008 -> 08:40 AM) I think he's dating 19 year old twins now. Who look exactly like the previous girlfriends. Go figure. Math question, how many times can 82 go into 19?
  6. Couple of thoughts. There is probably more to this than this article. If this is all, the Homeowner Assoc / Developer is a major ass. I understand he is trying to sell lots and this abandoned property is probably not helping, but there has to be a better solution.
  7. QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 08:22 PM) No, but it couldn't hurt to have it in case of emergency, i.e. someone needing to go to the hospital. Actually eighty is faster than most ambulances would go, so you are still covered. A seventeen year old doing 90 trying to get to a hospital is probably at a pretty increased risk for a major accident.

QUOTE (knightni @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 04:13 PM) They're all the same. Bleached blonde, fake boobed, Brazilian-waxed morons. you make that sound like a bad thing?
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 05:51 PM) Brian Anderson is one of the popularplayers on the team with his teammates. Like I said before, maybe it doesn't effect future performance, but it will have an effect on your status with teammates. We are talking about the same players who will say adios in a heartbeat for a bigger paycheck? Sorry, there are no loyalties in baseball anymore. If there were, Maggs and Thomas would still be on the team. So I can just as easily see the same greedy teammates who are there say, "hey it's a business and they aren't getting paid to be here, so they left, I can understand that". In fact, how often do we hear, "it's a business"? And look how much the fans truly appreciate the loyalty and support angle. Anderson was awesome in 2005. Man, he was on that top rail, leaping over and jumping and really supporting his teammates. Yet at any given time half the board wants him gone. I agree they probably should have stayed. But I don't agree it sent any message to their teammates. I don't think it helped BA in 2006 or 2008 that he hung around. And I don't recall any fans sticking up for him when he sucked because he was so loyal and supported his teammates. Some guys rise to the occasion and others fold. I believe you have to be in the game to learn which you are. I believe you need experience in the game to truly make a difference.
  10. With Obama, I distrust the polls the most. I believe we will see the greatest error of our recent Presidential elections.

  14. I'm a gun owner, member of the NRA, and if they read some of my posts here, they would probably refund my money. The Republkicans will let me have my guns, but no land use. The Democrats will give me recreation land, but no guns. And for the record, I am against guns for home protection when kids are involved. Start another thread for the whys
  15. QUOTE (Soxy @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) That actually happened to a friend of mine. They woke up, got served and told they needed to vacate. Although the other big problem out here is landlords not paying water bills, so the city was threatening to shut off the water to all of the affected apartments. Huge issue--since the tenants weren't responsible for the water bills. As a landlord I had mixed feelings about water bills. My first inclination was to have the tenants be responsible for the bills. That way if they were late with the rent, I wasn't also out the water bill as well. I was annoyed to be shelling out for utilities when they hadn't paid their rent. Then I had a tenant that shut off the drip irrigation system and destroyed the lawn and landscaping. He felt that since he was paying for the water, he should have total control over the bill. I couldn't really argue with him, although I really wished he had complained before doing that, I would have split the water bill with him.
  16. QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) Interesting article. A good example of what can happen when an engineering graduate student has too much time on their hands. I found it interesting that the 2007 WhiteSox had the most consistent offense in MLB. Only problem was that they were consistently horrible. When I got to that part in the article I started laughing. Yep, consistently horrible.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 03:00 PM) If I weren't busy getting hammered every Saturday night of the year, I would actually take the time out to watch it. I might have to start DVRing it so I can watch it later. Back in it's prime, SNL was everyone prequel to going out.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) I really like the bolded above, and you are right. Those are two of the key reasons why it took me a while to really settle on Obama as my choice. McCain is, on SOME social issues, a little more liberal than his cohorts. He was also basically the only GOP candidate actually interested in the environment and alternative energy in some fashion. And yeah, the GOP is still stuck in the religious conservative control, though I think that is starting to wane (see: McCain's nomination). I have plenty I disagree with Obama on - his cowardly FISA vote, his lack of experience, his bizarre tax plans and general fiscal policy, his overreaching agenda, his support of affirmative action... there are others too. But it really came down to, I don't have to "resolve" anything. I just need to choose the candidate whose total package - issue and policy views, leadership and management skills - was better. These two candidates are the strongest pair we've had in my voting lifetime (this is my 5th cycle). A McCain Presidency, leaving the disaster that is Palin aside, would not make me nearly as angry as Bush has, I think. But Obama is even stronger, overall. There is so much here I strongly agree with. Well, except your final choice. Perhaps I should have used a different term than resolve. I would really like a pre-Reagan fiscal conservative. Someone who actually makes us pay for every program. I have respect for small government, small tax Republicans. I have respect for tax and spend Democrats. I really dislike and have no respect for the don't tax and spend spend spend leaders we have been electing in both parties and I see the start of that with Reagan. The business of America is business and neither candidate is addressing issues through that filter. Although I believe McCain has a slightly better handle than Obama. I also believe that McCain can successfully end the Iraq war quicker than Obama.
  19. QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 11:10 AM) The problem is that you have to assume pitching is a constant to make those comparisons meaningful. Since it's not, that makes the stats interesting but not very useful in the real world. Perhaps http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/...istency-is-key/ Interesting read.
  20. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) They are definitely in the running. Zing. but is zing really the best term?
  21. QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 11:11 AM) Well... I think it goes without saying that inconsistently good is going to be better than consistently bad. That's were some tie back to league average needs to be made. Does consistent .3 runs below the league average top inconsistent .3 runs above the league average?
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 11:27 AM) Yeah what's wrong with you Tex? McCain in some tight jeans with no back pockets as to not mess with the lines...oh yeah you know, maybe a three way with his wife . . .

  24. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 09:58 AM) I'm not a statistician, but I would think you could normalize the std. dev. based on the average, and use that to compare across the league. Average for the team or against the league? How would you account for a team that doesn't score enough runs? Or another way, the question is how important is consistency. How would you compare a team who is inconsistent and scores say 5 runs per game against a team that is very consistent but only scores 2 runs per game? The lack of scoring would confound the study.
  25. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 10:54 AM) mmmm I'm hoping he didn't mean John
