I'd still like to see Rios to Philly for Dominic Brown. That would free up money to get Granderson and you could lefty/righty platoon Brown and Viciedo in RF. Also, Floyd for Salty and the Sox could put a couple of needed LH bats in the lineup.
-
Could the Sox live Viciedo at 3b? DeAza or Grandy playing LF and CF with Dayan going to 3rd presents a pretty potent lineup. You have to figure about 25 errors at 3b but would the offensive influx Granderson would supply offset that? I saw Pedro Alvarez had 27 errors and a .926 fielding % last year. I think Viciedo could put up similar numbers, defensivley. Keppinger, or even Beckham, could be used in the utility/late inning defensive role. Just a thought.

A guy that KW always coveted was Jose Reyes. Now that he's in Toronto, and they have been interested in Floyd, maybe he gets flipped to the Sox in some kind of deal. It doesn't make that much sense from a Blue Jay pespective but you never know.

First big move of the offseason prediction contest

Sign Pagan for CF. Trade Rios and Thornton to Philly for Dominic Brown and Aumont Trade Floyd, Rienzo, and Morel to Pittsburgh for Alvarez Sign a vet C. OF: Tank in LF, Pagan in CF, Brown in RF, DeAza could platoon with Tank and be 4th OF IF: Alavrez, Ramirez, Beckham, Konerko I think this would make the Sox younger, cheaper, and better. Now we just need the Pirates and Phillies to get on board -
First big move of the offseason prediction contest

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 12:52 AM) Sorry, that's actual news. It doesn't make it any more intelligent, but that actually happened. But Brent Morel, Leyson Septimo, and Dylan Axelrod for David Wright (or other ridiculous trade ideas) waste space. My point is ridiculous trades sometimes happen. Granted, the Wright trade is very unlikely, but you never know. To me, it's no more waste of space when people say, for example: it will cost X player minimun, or the other team will laugh at you, or hang up on you. As if they know the value of every player and what each team/GM is thinking. I was going to suggest a trade of Rios to Philly for Dominic Brown and one of their young pitchers, maybe Aumont. I'm sure somebody would say no way Philly is going to do that, which may be the case. Still, Philly can take on salary and is in a certain win now situation because their window is definitely closing with all their aging, high priced veterans. They have cooled a bit on Brown and may not have the patience to wait on him to reach his potential. Do I think it will happen, no. But it's not out of the realm of possibility either. -

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 13, 2012 -> 10:41 PM) It's also meant for productive discussion. I see nothing unproductive about what he said. The trade proposals on this board ARE ridiculous. you mean like suggesting Reyes, Buerhle, Johnson, Buck + getting traded in the same deal. -
First big move of the offseason prediction contest

The Sox acquire to young left handed hitters who have been somewhat disappointing, Pedro Alvarez and Dominic Brown. -
I could see AJ signing with the Yankees. His LH bat would be nice fit for their short right field. He'd probably have to platoon with Martin(I assume he'll be back) but he's getting up there and may be okay with a platoon situation.
-
I wonder what it would take to get Pedro Alvarez from Pitt. I think Headley may cost more than Alvarez. Either way, I would hope the Sox can get a guy they can count on beig out there everyday instead of going with a guy like Morel, or another young, unproven guy, and hoping he pans out.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 2, 2012 -> 08:28 PM) We're using win-loss record for bullpen analysis? Yikes... I think bullpen losses are important. I'm not singling you out but with all the "new" stats, we are told you can't judge a SP by wins and losses, you can't judge RP by wins or losses, saves are supposedly a flawed stat. How are we supposed to know who is a good pitched and who isn't? You can't really go by ERA for RP because one bad outing can skew their ERA. I think I even heard Steve Stone say in a broadcast that you can tell a good pitcher by the number of unearned runs he's allowed. To me, if a SP is 19-7, I don't care what his ERA is. Same with my closer. If he saves 40+ and only 2-3 blown saves, he can have an ERA of 4.5+.

A team that may take on Rios's salary is Philly. They are pretty much in a win now mode. With their age and payroll, they have to be. Rios would give them a much better chance to win next year than their young OF's. The Phils have somewhat cooled on Dominic Brown. If the Sox could get Brown and another highly regarded prospect(I think they have a nice C prospect), I would seriously look into that trade. The Sox would have a potentially very good young OF in Tank, DeAza, and Brown. I don't think that would make the Sox better next year but would long term.
-
The Sox are in first place in mid-September with Reed converting 26-30 save oppurtunities and the bullpen roles pretty much set. He's blown 1 save(a game they ended up winning) since July 19. Yep, let's change things around the last 3 weeks.
-
I'll start by saying Beckham will never be as good as this guy, but the Sox should have handled Beckham the was Cleveland did Brandon Phillips. They kept wanting him to be the guy but he couldn't hit. They put him in the minors and then finally shipped him out to Cincy. Then, in his 5th year at age 25, he finally started putting it together and has become a top notch 2B for Cincy. He's still oly .300 once but he's consistently in the .270 range with about 20 HR, 80 RBI, and we'd all take that from Beckham. The Sox should have sent Beckham down in his 2nd year but it's too late now. I don't think he's a lost cause but it's pretty close.

Nice to dream but can you imagine a playoff rotation of Felix, Sale, Peavy, Liriano.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 02:42 PM) Complicated an hour and a half before the deadline usually ends with no deal. True, but if there is a deal, it has likely been worked on for awhile and not just thrown together today. But you never know.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 02:03 PM) Be honest...does anyone really want Liriano signed to a multi year deal? I'd gamble on him for next year if the price was in the 7 figure range, but would anyone commit 3/$30 to a guy who has had an ERA above 5 three of the last 4 years? I guess it depends on how he pitches for the Sox. I wouldn't sign him from the get go but what if he's lights out for 3-4 consecutive starts and Coop does work well with him? I wouldn't have a problem with it.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2012 -> 01:17 PM) I have a sneaking suspicion that Liriano somehow ends up back here again next year. We'll see. I do too. I'm going from memory but didn't KW sign Freddy Garcia to an extension shortly after trading for him? He may do the same with Liriano, especially if Floyd gets moved.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 09:32 PM) I just don't think KW wants to make a deal to hurt future teams. . It's just too much to sacrifice on a rental. You may be right but I think this year's team is what KW was hoping for/expecting last year when they were supposedly "all in". Therfore, I think he may go for it this year and he sees the window of oppurtunity to win it all closing very quickly. I know it's hard to predict the future, but 2 years from now PK, AJ, Dunn, Peavy, and Youk are all probably gone and the Sox aren't contending anyway. Why not try and win it all this year?
-
I think he'll use Reed in a deal to get Greinke and then pick up Huston Street from SD. Floyd, Mitchell, Reed, possibly another pitching prospect for Greinke. I don't think Street will cost a ton if/when he turns down SD's contract extension proposal.
-
I think the offer may be along the lines of Floyd, Mitchell, and Jones/Reed. I don't know if that could get it done though. The Brewers could pick up Floyd's option, get a legit prospect in Mitchell, and receive some much needed bullpen help. I don't know if Jones can develop into a closer but he's probably already as good as Axford and K rod are right now.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 25, 2012 -> 01:49 AM) It's been mentioned somewhere today (sorry too many threads) that Padres are not shopping Volquez as will rather build around him. FWIW. I didn't see that. I wish there was a possible way to pry Felix from Seattle.
-
Volquez pitched another good game tonight. He's the one I want. He probably can had for the cheapest amount and is under contract for another year. Why give up a bunch of talent for 2 months of Grienke when you can probably get similar results for less with Volquez? Plus, you'd be set in the rotation for next year(assuming options are picked up and health is ok) as well with the likes of Danks, Sale, Volquez, Floyd, Peavy, Quintana, and even Humber could be around. If you use Floyd in a trade for Greinke, and then Greinke leaves, you have Danks, Sale, Peavy, Quintana, and Humber next year. That doesn't sound nearly as good to me.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Except there were many witnesses. It happened in a public place. And being drunk or bombed or lit is no excuse for ever hitting a woman, period. I hope you wouldn't accept that excuse if a brother-in-law of yours used it. 2 things, I'd never condone hitting a woman but there were no marks on her and there's a good chance the witnesses were not entirely accurate, especially if they were drinking as well. I'm not saying he did or didn't. I'm not going to judge him. Heck, I live in Columbus, Ohio and an OSU LB was recently charged with domestic violence for pushing his drunk ex-girlfriend out his apartment door when she showed up un-invited. She barged in screaming and he pushed he back out through the door. It's a different set of circumstances but I don't consider him a woman beater. I'm pretty familiar with the situation and that's almost exactly how it happened.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:43 PM) Northsidesawx, it's on the borderline of something that's hard to excuse. We wouldn't be saying "relax" if it was rape or something like the Sandusky case...but it's going to be very polarizing for the fanbase. Some won't accept him no matter what, others will be more forgiving if he goes out and performs. If it was your sister or relative who was beaten up, you might feel differently. I read the "PR spin/feel good" story earlier in the thread, but that doesn't necessarily make it the truth. why is that not true and the other story is? Baseball-wise, it's a good move. He's had one incident, disputed at that, I'm not going to judge the guy.
