I used to have a beard but then decided my face was much too pretty to be covered up by hair and I was doing the world a disservice by not keeping it in plain sight.

Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 29, 2015 -> 07:09 AM) Hows your defense at 3B? Can you handle a 120 mph line drive? Pretty good if it's hit right at me. -
Sox sign Gordon Beckham, designate Viciedo for Assignment
Lemon_44 replied to flavum's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Just when I thought I would never have to see Adam Dunn or Gordon Beckham take another AB in a Sox uni, they do this. If Hahn wanted to give away $2 million dollars, I would have gladly accepted it. -
Didn't the Sox expose Jordan a couple years ago to every other team and nobody bit? At that point there was still a question as to whether he could hit MLB pitching. Now there is no question, he can't. That should tell you his value.
-
I can't see the Sox giving up at top 5 prospect for a 34 year old player. It goes against what Hahn has been saying. If they didn't have to give up Anderson, Hawkins, Montas, etc. to acquire a top SP like Samardzija, they are not going to give one to acquire Zorbrist, and why should they?
-
I would just as soon keep Viciedo as a 4th OF/occasional DH than dump him off for nothing. It's not like our OF's have had a track record of staying healthy. If one of them goes down I'd rather have a guy with a little pop in his bat than sending out a Jordan Danks everyday.

QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Dec 17, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Try Viciedo and Montas. There is almost no market for Viciedo, and he could be had for less after DFA'd. Castro is a candidate for a bounce back season at a premium position. Why is Castro, who is 2 years older and, other than 1 year, been a worse offensive player than Dayan a bounce back candidate but Viciedo is not?

Should The Sox Buy the Old Post Office For A New Stadium?
Lemon_44 replied to nitetrain8601's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I don't live in Chicago(Columbus, Ohio actually), but usually go to a game at USCF at least once a year and have a question. Why haven't the Sox, or the city of Chicago been able to renovate the area around the stadium to make it more desirable? Cleveland's stadium(s) were in bad neighborhoods but they've made the areas nice with restaurants and bars to frequent before and after the games. They did the same here in Columbus when they built their new AAA park. I'm sure it happens all over the place. How come it hasn't happened for the Sox? -
Instead of Scherzer, I think I would offer up a 4 year deal to Shields for around 75-80 mill. This would offer the protection of having a strong RHP still in the rotation if Shark would bolt after 1 year. Also, IF they could deal Danks, that would offset much of Shields's cost for the first couple years. If they would re-sign Shark, a rotation of Sale, Shark, Q, Shields, and Rodon hurling the next 3-5 years doesn't sound too shabby. By then, all the youngsters should be more than ready too.

Trayce Thompson is about the top level prospect I would trade for Castro. I wouldn't even discuss Hawkins for him. I really don't get the infatuation with Castro. I know he's a catcher and that improves his value but, at the plate, he's been worse the Viciedo, the guy everybody is itching to see in another uniform.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 09:41 PM) Ortiz was always a plus hitter and Gomez had speed and defensive talent to fall back on. Viciedo's "development" has consisted of the same recurring bad habits and continuing deterioration at the plate. After this many plate appearances, age is no longer an excuse. Ortiz's first 5 years yielded a 1.3 OWAR, Dayan's is 2.3. Ortiz did take off in year 6 though.
-
I have no problem giving Viciedo another year to show improvement at the plate. He's not going to be a good defensive player but there have been a lot of bad defensive players that can hit and hit for power. I don't know why everyone is writing off a 25 year old. There are numerous players that have struggled at the plate in their early to mid 20's and then turned it around into nice careers. Ortiz and Carlos Gomez come to mind. I'm not saying he'll turn into that type of hitter but I'm not writing him off either. I always see in the minor league section people talking about guys being in age appropriate levels. Viciedo has been in the bigs since 21 so his development is occurring at the ML level. Nelson Cruz was just entering ML at 25.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 10, 2014 -> 01:41 AM) Ethier/Kemp/Crawford/Van Slyke Rasmus Morse (that would be the equivalent of Viciedo, or worse) Aoki Melky Cabrera Jay Bruce Alex Rios (haha) Snider/Lambo Parra Carlos Gonzalez/Dickerson/Blackmon Bruce would be my choice. I think he's far and away the best of that bunch. He probably wouldn't cost Anderson but would take 2 or 3 top prospects. Maybe Danish/Montas, and Thompson plus.
-
How about Viciedo and Danks for Kemp. The money kind of matches up but not sure why the Dodgers would do that unless they are hellbent on trading Kemp. However, I may be about the only one who is okay with giving Dayan one more shot at putting it all together offensively.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 9, 2014 -> 11:48 AM) I don't think the Sox are sold on Connor as an everyday starter. I think they see value in him but would prefer him in a super utility role. He could probably play OF, 1B, 3B, and even a bit of 2B off the bench if you let him work on it. I am not saying he could play those positions well but could provide a lot of flexibility and you could leverage advantageous matchups. What would be great is if Davidson bounces back and wins the 3b job, which is not out of the realm of possibility, and that allows Gillaspie to fill that role.

Sox acquire Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa

I was okay with Danish and Trey being the minor leaguers. This deal is even better. -
I wouldn't have a problem with paying him $12.5 mill. That's what the Sox paid LaRoche and I think Robertson would have a bigger impact than him.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:01 AM) . This is not true in the least. I think Quintana would easily get $20+ million. He's just not a household name and we underrate our own. Jose Quintana is like really, really good you guys. I think it's absolutely true that Hamel would be in more demand and don't think it's all that close. People like to use WAR as a standard and Hamels almost doubled Quintana's, 6.6 to 3.5, last year, and has been a 4+ WAR 6 of the past 7 years. Plus, Hamels is just a better pitcher. Q is good. He's just not at Hamels past or present level, yet. There's nothing wrong with that. Not too many pitchers are at that level.
-
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 02:06 AM) Please explain to me why Hamels is so much better than Q and you can't use stats cause those aren't your own words. Put them both on the open market and Hamel's is going to get the better contract and be more in demand. Part of Q's value is tied to his team friendly contract.

QUOTE (glangon @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 06:55 AM) If you do that then you give up the 2nd round draft pick which Hahn has been unwilling to do so far. If you want to give up that 2nd round pick, you are as well spending a little more and going for it with Scherzer. I wouldn't let a 2nd round draft pick deter me. I know Hahn says that but I don't agree with it. A 1st round pick would be a different story. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) IMO, if we're willing to spend what it takes to extend him, go sign Shields, keep the player we'd trade, and sacrifice a 2nd round pick that is much less likely to be a contributor. Yeah you get a guy who is older, but you keep the high minor league player and frankly Shields has for much of his career been a better pitcher than Samardzija. I agree. That move would make much more sense. If you sign Shields, the players being bandied about in Samardzjia talks could be used to acquire an impact bat and the Sox are better on both fronts. -
This board is a very intelligent baseball group, although a little too advance stats oriented for my like, so I find it strange that many of you don't like Jay Bruce. A healthy Jay Bruce is a top level baseball player.

Instead of Cespedes and Samardzija, I'd rather trade for Homer Bailey and Jay Bruce. -

I don't see any way Hahn includes Anderson in a deal. He's the heir apparent at SS, he's the Sox top hitting prospect, and he was Hahn's first draft pick so there's some sentiment for Anderson to be successful tied to Hahn. I would deal Semien, Ravelo, and a minor league pitcher right now if that would get the deal done. Dealing Semien is dealing from a position of strength and if Ravelo can't play anywhere but 1B, he really has no place to play for the Sox in the foreseeable future. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 10:51 PM) if you don't mind, lets flip this, what value would you put Q at??? I think I'm probably in the vast minority, but I'd trade Q for Bruce straight up. That's assuming Bruce is back to 100%. I think he'd bring more to the Sox than Quintana. I know people mention his contract but 17 mill, or whatever he's scheduled to make, doesn't seem all that bad when the Sox just gave 12.5 mill to a 35 year old part time DH. Maybe I overrate Bruce, but a 27 year old who has put up his kind of numbers is the type of guy that can be a major building block.
