  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2013 -> 09:25 PM) Gordon Beckham is right now barely adequate any more at 2b. He's not moving to SS. You may as well pencil in Viciedo there. Is this better: LF: Khris Davis CF: Jon Jay RF: Garcia 3B: Sandoval SS: Viciedo 2B: Semien 1B: Abreu C: Saltamacchia DH: Dunn
  2. LF- Viciedo CF- Jon Jay RF- Garcia 3B- Pablo Sandoval SS- Beckham 2B- Semien 1B- Abreu C- Saltamacchia DH- Dunn The Sox acquire Jay from the Cards in a deal with Alexei. Other parts, but those 2 are the principals. The Sox acquire Sandoval in a deal with SF involving De Aza and pitching.
  3. On the local radio here, they say it's not of question of if, but when, the Reds trade Brandon Phillips. They say he's a pain in the butt in the clubhouse and called Votto out on his contract, but he'd be a very nice upgrade over Beckham. I don't recall if he has the arm, but could he be a possible 3B candidate?
  4. I don't understand why people are so down on Viciedo. He has alot of upside and, to me, is the kind of guy you want. He's young, going into his 3rd year, and looks like a guy who could breakout like Dominic Brown did in Philly. I'd like to add a CF and keep De Aza as the 4th OF. How about a trade for Carlos Gomez? I know that's taking a chance that this past year was a "career" year but it may also be that he is hitting his prime and may be coming into his own. Milwaukee could use some pitching.
  5. QUOTE (JoshPR @ Sep 29, 2013 -> 07:49 AM) Robin was Kenny's hire not Hahn I know but I'm sure Hahn had some input and he's also letting Robin stay around another year, at least. However, my point was, as an organization, how were they okay hiring a manager that hadn't ever coached/managed a single game in his life yet are looking for a guy with experience at a much less significant position? I don't know if Thome will be a good hitting instructor, or not, but to rule him out based solely on lack of experience doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, even moreso when you look at what they did when hiring Ventura.
  6. I find it odd that experience is preferred for a hitting coach but didn't seem to be a big deal when it came to hiring a manager.
  7. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 12:45 AM) Time to end the Viciedo experiment. Maybe as a LF but I'd like to keep his bat around. Even then, I think there a lot worse problems on the team than him and his play in LF, which has not been good.
  8. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 12, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) The idea of "giving" someone away screams bad baseball management to me. It also screams short-sighted and/or non-attentive if you are still giving Dunn away failing to realize how good he has been since about June 8th or whenever. I know he's been pretty good but I'm changing the whole attitude of the team. I'm not saying he's a problem, I just wouldn't expect any kind of significant return for him. We'd get rid of his salary and replace him younger options that can be part of the future. I don't see any way Dunn is here after his contract is up.
  9. When the team is this bad, both physically and menatlly, obviously, an almost complete overhaul is needed. Through trades and a couple free agent signings I think te Sox can put a very good offensive lineup on the field. For starters, sign Abreu and Hunter Pence. They shouldn't spend big money on McCann, plus I don't think ATL lets him go that easily. That's it for the free agents. With trades, I start by giving Dunn away to any team that will take him. I think there will a team that will take a flyer him for 1 year and see what happens. Next, I trade Alexei, who I still really like, along with a minor league pitcher and maybe another piece if needed, o STL for Mike Adams. Next, I trade DeAza and again hit the minor league pitching along with another piece, if needed, to SF for Sandoval. The '14 Sox lineup: OF: Viciedo, Garcia, Pence IF: Sandoval, Semien/Garcia, Beckham, Abreu/Adams DH: Abreu/Adams C: Phegley Bench: Keppinger, Semien/Garcia, Danks, backup C I think this could be realistic but, as in most cases, probably won't happen. Also, they'd deal Konerko for nothing to any team interested and release Gillapsie(or trade Keppinger and keep Gillapsie).
  10. QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 09:27 PM) Why would the offensively challenged Giants look to trade Sandoval? Why not? De Aza would be an offensive upgrade in the OF. As much as they have struggled this year, I would think they would look at any trade possibilities.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2013 -> 09:20 PM) Ellersby? Yes, Jack Ellersby. You know the CF. I had a brain fart. I golf with a guy whose last name is Ellersby. Who knows, maybe he can play CF also.
  12. I would try and target Sandoval from SF to play 3B. Maybe swing a trade centered around De Aza. Next dip into free agency and sign Ellersby and the Abreu kid. OF: Viciedo, Ellersby, Garcia IF: Sandoval, Alexei, Beckham, Abreu DH: Dunn C: Phegley/Flowers Bench: Keppinger, Danks(other minor leaguer), Sanchez/Semien(other minor leaguer) pictching staff would be pretty similar to the current staff.
  13. QUOTE (HeGone7 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 01:40 PM) If there is a second half strike-out record, he and Davis may break it. True, but they may also combine to hit 50-60 HR's too.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 10:22 AM) No, I caught him in his first game in AA and "Low 90's" seems perfect. I think he might have popped as high as 93 in that game but he was definitely low 90's. The guy I saw last year who was able to hit upper 90's was Simon Castro. I have zero idea what happened to his fastball. The guy who hit 100 was Daniel Webb. Thanks. It just hit me. The guy I was thinking about was Infante.
  15. I noticed Rienzo was throwing in the low 90's last night. Is he the same guy who a couple years ago was a relief pitcher and reportedly throwing in the upper 90's, even 100, or am I thinking of someone else? I know MPH isn't the biggest deal but that seems like a significant drop in velocity. Or is he just throwing with less MPH because he's now a starter?.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:49 AM) No way would the Pirates claim him and risk having to take on that entire contract. Wasn't it reported awhile back in this thread that Pittsburgh said they could absorb a big contract like Rios's if needed? Why not take a chance on claiming him and not losing any of their highly rated propsects? Obviously, a trade could still be worked out but, if I'm Pittsburgh and can take on the money, I absolutely claim him. Hopefully it's a moot point and a trade gets worked out today.
  17. If Rios doesn't get moved today, you figure the Sox will put him on the waiver list. Do you think he gets claimed by anyone or passes through? You figure at least Pitts would put a claim in and then we're right back here again. Other than Pitts, I don't really see anybody wanting to take a chance on the Sox just letting them take his contract.
  18. After acquring Garcia and Jacobs, the Sox have some extra OF's that could be dangled with the most valuable probably being Trayce Thompson. Does Ramirez, Thompson, and Lindstrom get you Adams and Martinez/Wong? I'd probably rather just see if Alexei and Lindstrom could pull Adams though.
  19. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:15 AM) The more I think about it, the less I want Tank at 1B. Either keep him out in LF or make him the permanent DH for this team moving forward. He was horrible at 3b (which I know is the hardest infield position to play), but I have a feeling he will be just as bad as Miguel Cabrera over there. Let him continue to improve out in LF for now. At least we know he has a terrific arm and is very capable of throwing guys out. Here is my hope for today and the future! Do whatever it takes to trade Rios and cash for Hansen (Pittsburgh). Trade Alexei today or this winter for some pitching. Having a team looking like this next year wouldn't be bad: RF- A. Garcia CF- De Aza LF- Viciedo 3B- Gillepsie SS- Hanson 2B- Beckham 1B- Dunn C- Phegley DH- FA Signing It's too bad that Viciedo couldn't handle 3rd becasue any lineup that inlcudes Connor Gillapsie has a gaping hole in it. I think a better lineup would be: OF- Garcia, De Aza, Viciedo 3B- Trade/FA 2B- Some combo of Beckham/Hanson/Wong/Semien/Sanchez 1B- Adams C- Phegley DH- Dunn Of course that would Rios to Pitt for Hanson or pitching and Ramirez + + for Adams and maybe Wong.
  20. QUOTE (Baron @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:05 PM) Paul Calvisi ‏@PaulCalvisi 27s Paulie Peavy: D-backs source says it's "either/or" now in trade talks. Either Chisox eat more of $14.5M salary or take lesser prospect(s).. https://twitter.com/PaulCalvisi I know when it comes to football and the Cardinals, Calvisi is pretty legit and doesn't go with rumors.
  21. Peavy to Boston for Middlebrooks, Brentz, Ranaudo Ramirez, Lidstrom, + to St.Louis for Adams Rios to Pittsburgh for Kingham, Barret Barnes Crain to TB for ???
  22. QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Jul 27, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Shack ... A wrestler? Oh no, man. The great Cecilio ("Cy") Acosta was a Mexican relief pitcher who joined the Sox in June of 1972 as part of that really enjoyable 1972 Sox team, that featured 20 year olds Terry Forster and Rich Gossage in the bullpen. Loved that team and Cy Acosta (good old #41) has long been one of those "blast from the past names" that some of my contemporaries enjoy hearing. His baseball card is my avatar! That's no wrestler, man!!! As for your post, I think you're misunderstanding me. You're suggesting with language like "this sort of usage" or "using a product incorrectly" that I'm implying that Crain was used incorrectly. I think nothing of the sort. So I never get to your rhetorical question of "does that only make the practice of misuse unacceptable when harm does occur." When I say that Crain was perhaps borderline overused, I mean that he was on the cusp of being used more than I might have preferred (given factors relevant to Crain's career). I simply wish circumstances had been different so that we had the option to "baby" him a little. Unfortunately: (a) there really wasn't a way around it since we've got to try and win games during that May time when he was used so much, and (b) it wasn't as if he was used in an unreasonable or excessive way, instead he was used slightly more, just minimally more, than I might have preferred. That's baseball. Gotta play the game with the players on the roster. Cy, the Goose, and that "Fat tub of Goo" weren't available! Personally, I think going back in time and looking at the past from what we know now (Jesse being injured; this Sox team, essentially sucking) is a great disservice to Ventura or Coop, UNLESS they used him wayyyyyyyyy too much, in a way that was way out of the bell-curve. And they didn't. In my opinion, most of his heavy use happened in May, as they battled to get to .500 in very late May. He barely pitched during the 9 game losing streak because he wasn't needed. Then he pitched a few games ... was off to give his arm a week breather ... pitched a few more games ... and then the DL stint. He's a paid, professional pitcher that was part of a bullpen. His manager and pitching coach leaned on him, but in a way that you need to be able to lean on a quality professional. Sure, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, had we known that his arm wouldn't hold up, then we might have babied him. However, had we done that, professional scouts would have also recognized that they couldn't rely on a pitcher like that anyway, so poof, there goes his trade value as well. Damned if you do; damned if you don't. It's unfortunate for Jesse that his injury likely curtailed his career year; it's unfortunate for the White Sox that his injury happened when it all but eliminated any real trade value (although, I still think someone will take a flyer on him on a PTBNL type trade); but no way do I think anyone is "guilty" of mis or overusing him. Speaking of the '72 team. When I moved into my new house about 8 years ago, I was talking to my neighbor, got to talking baseball and how I was Sox fan. It turns out her dad pitched for the Sox in '72 and '73. She brought me over his baseball card. His name is Jim Geddes and he only pitched in 11 games over the two seasons but it was still very cool that he pitched for the Sox. I met him a couple weeks later and it was fun talking about those teams because that's when I was growing up, really started getting interested in baseball, and was on my way to becoming a huge Sox fan.
  23. I'd like to Sox to be able to somehow pull off getting Middlebrooks from Boston and Adams from the Cardinals.
  24. Would Middlebrooks, Ranaudo, and Brentz be enough in people's eyes as a return for Peavy?
  25. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 24, 2013 -> 01:13 AM) I'm sorry but I don't want David Freese. Never really liked him. He is so hyped because of what he did in the playoffs but he hasn't done much since. I would rather keep Gillaspie and see if he can improve into next year. Would rather try to get a different player. And he is already 30 with injury problems Freese has never finished the year with less than a .292 average. Granted, last year was his first an an evryday player but he finished at .292 with 20 HR and a .839 OPS. He's at .275 and .734 this year. Gillaspie has a long way to go before he ever sniffs those numbers when seeing any significant playing time. Gillaspie may improve but Freese would be a huge upgrade.
