QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) Can we please not get into naming names? This isn't the Red Scare.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 19, 2012 -> 11:22 PM) i dont know what to make of this team. weve seen stretches in which they can look really good but then you see the glaring weaknesses. theres a lot of holes on this team, eventually it just may be too many to overcome that's what happens when you are relying on so many rookies. They are just inconsistent. Another problem showing up is Matt Thornton not getting anyone out on a regular basis.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) I know he's been on fire lately, but don't things usually start to even out? Plus moving to the AL. I think there are a lot of red flags with Dempster. I don't think he's the guy the Sox should go after. I agree. I'd much rather got after the Volquez/ Street deal that was talked about earlier. I think Volquez is the better pitcher anyway and he'd be around at least another year. Street could be moved in to the closers role and Reed to the 8th inning, or vice/versa. I don't think Reed would complain or let it hurt his confidence at all since Street has proven to be a pretty elite closer when healthy.

I'd like the Sox to address the bullpen more. SD is open to trading Huston Street and they have been trade partners in the past. It just depends on what SD would ask for in return.

White Sox trade Osvaldo Martinez to LAD for cash.

QUOTE (Jillian Michaels' Abs @ Jul 11, 2012 -> 12:44 AM) The Dodgers have no AAA SS. When Dee Gordon hit the DL, they called up the last player at AAA resembling a serviceable infielder. They will likely release him as soon as Gordon is back (which could be a while). Didn't they have a hotsot SS propect a few years back that was supposed to set MLB on fire. I think his name was Liu or something along those lines. Just goes to show how many of those "can't miss" propspects actually miss. Is that Philly OF playing this year, Brown? Who would've though Juan Pierre would be playing OF and hitting over .300 and Brown is yet to be heard from. Then you have guys like Quintana and Nate Jones come out of nowhere and have big time success. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 10, 2012 -> 02:09 AM) http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heym...ying-in-seattle So that means he's traded come the deadline . I never really thought the Sox would get him but why not try. As for the Seattle GM, with all their young pitching coming up, they'd be stupid not to see what kind of hitting they can get for him. They don't have 1 guy hitting above .260.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 9, 2012 -> 08:15 AM) Felix Hernandez is making $18.5 million this year. I don't think they're worried about him making a lot of money. Money is always an issue. They are a losing team with him and he'd be their biggest trade chip to rebuild the talent pool. If they can do that and shed 18.5 million in salary, they'd have to look at it. What team in that situation wouldn't look at it?

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2012 -> 07:12 AM) And who could u possibly acquire him with that wouldn't cripple our major league roster? We really don't have the pieces or ammunition for that type of acquisition. And what is Seattle's motivation to trade him? Even Viciedo, Nathan Jones, Mitchell and Thompson/Saladino wouldn't get it done. Not even close. People always say that and then a guy gets traded and you hear things like, "that's all it took to get him." Felix would cost alot but the Sox, or any team, has the assets to get him. What was Seattle's motivation for letting Griffey, Johnson, Arod, or others leave? They all made, or were about to make, big money. Seattle isn't winning so stocking up on assets isn't a bad option. All that being said, I seriously doubt the Sox trade for him.
-
Why think small nd go after a back of the end rotation guy. Think big and go after King Felix. Seattle isn't going anywhere anytime soon and they've shown in the past that they will trade their star players.
-
He'll probably be back next year. There's really no other option right now. Flowers looks like he's trying to eat himself out of the league and Phegley probably won't be ready. I could see Phegley on the team next backing up AJ and Flowers elsewhere.

Something has to be done to improve the rotation

I wonder what it would cost to get Joe Saunders from AZ? They may have fall a little further out before they'd make him available but they have some good young SP on the horizon and may be willing to move him. -
I have seen where Chris Johnson from Houston could be had. He's been a good, solid but by no means any kind of star at 3B and would be an upgrade over what we have. I can't see him having a super high price tage except for the fact that every GM has to know the Sox are desperate for 3B and will try to make them overpay.

It wasn't very lomg ago that I saw people suggesting that the Sox go to a 6 man rotation because we had so many starters. Humber and Floyd are just in a bad stretch right now and every time they make a bad pitch it is getting hit over the fence. Floyd has definitlely earned the right to work through it. Humber is on a shorter leash but he has shown he can get the job done. Unless a proven MLB starter is acquired through a trade, I would give these guys some more time before I start counting on a guy like Quintana. He has pitched well but the league will get a firmer scouting report on him and we'll see how he does. When Danks gets healthy, I still the Sox have as good a staff an anyone in the division. If Floyd goes on a typical hot strecth, their pitching can match up with anybody in the AL. -
I don't see any way the Sox would trade Floyd for Youkilis. It seems to me that KW is usually trying to acquire established starting pitching during the season than trade it away. He may trade a young SP, like Hudson or Richard, but even in those deals he received a more established SP in return. I'm sure it has happened, I can't remember, but has KW ever traded one of his top 4 starters during the season.

Hawk was tested yesterday on his umpire rants and pretty much bit his tongue on the BS balk call by Joe West. You could tell he wanted to say soemthing but just sat their quietly. The only thing he said was along the lines of, "look who's over to make the call".
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 30, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) Hawk's rant after Q's ejection is reason #3,258 why the guy needs to go. What an embarassment. It's one thing to show passion, but that was just a joke. (Cue the "He's such a true Sox fan" arguments) What would your ideal announcer's response have been? I though Hawk's reaction was exactly right and was the same as most of the Sox fans watching.

QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ May 30, 2012 -> 06:55 PM) Good news. And I swear the pitcher on the Rays was trying to drill him. 100%. Glad we swept em. Onward. Good thing Howell's fastball tops out at about 78. Otherwise, there could have been more damage.

I like Harrelson. I don't watch the game for the announcer's "insight". I would rather be entertained. I feel I've been wathcing and know enough about baseball that I don't need educated during a braodcast. To me, Harrelson is like sitting at a bar with a guy rooting for your team. I don't want a new generation announcer bombarding with all the sabermetric stats like BABIP, WAR, and the like. Then you have the horrible new catch phrases these guys come up with for their homerun call that are ridiculously stupid. Give me the "he gawn", the catbird seat, and the god guys and I'm happy.

I saw Stultz got claimed, and pitched a nice game, in SD. So basically the Sox traded Stultz for Hudson.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 20, 2012 -> 03:57 AM) Moving Beckham now makes ZERO sense. In the future, Lillibridge is the only middle infielder in our system who could claim to put up similar offensive numbers at 2B (to what Beckham has been doing the past month), but he'd be a platoon player against only LHP and there's considerable doubt whether he can handle the position defensively...or definitely questions about his compatibility with Alexei as double-play partners. You certainly can't "build" around Hudson at 2B or 3B and get rid of Beckham. I don't think the Sox can, or should, count on building around Beckham either. For the month of May he's hitting .250 and still only .206 for the year. I know May has been good by his standards but it wouldn't preclude me from moving him at all. Beckham is a very good defensive 2B but it's not that good to make up for a .604 ops. I don't think the Sox will move him to 3B but I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it. I mean would the Sox really be any worse off with Hudson playing 2B rather than Beckham? My thought is, why not try moving him? Maybe it will shake him up and get some production. It probably won't but he's not a fixture at 2B. Like, I said earlier, if he doesn't hit this year then he's likely an utility IF in the future anyway. To me it doesn't really matter who plays 3B, Beckham or Hudson. I'll be quite happy if I don't ever have to watch Morel face MLB pitching again. I think if the Sox could somehow fix 3B that they could legitimately challenge for the Central Division. Looking around the league, I can't see the Sox acquiring anything of significance so maybe roll the ice with the current roster and see if a move may produce results.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 19, 2012 -> 11:53 PM) Beckham was playing out of position at third base. It's not the right position for his defensive skillset and raises the expectations for his bat tremendously. I don't see a reason to mess with him right now. Orlando Hudson is expendable -- if you f*** him over by moving him out of position, who cares? He's 34 and signed for the league minimum. I see your point. BUt I'd just try something. I don't see how the expectations for his bat can be raised when the other 2 guys playing 3B that he'd be replacing haven't hit .160. Plus, it's not like Beckham has cemented his place on the roster at 2b either. If he doesn't hit this year, he's probably a utility IF at best anyway.
-
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 19, 2012 -> 11:29 PM) I'd say unlikely, though Hudson's been strictly a 2nd baseman his whole career. An, although there's really no correlation, the only time Beckham has provided any offense was when he played 3B. Personally, I would move Beckham to 3rd and let Hudson play 2nd. Hudson has shown to be a good 2b and never played 3rd while Beckham has shown the ability to play 3b at the MLB level. I don't think the Sox will make this move but I would. Who knows maybe Beckham finds a comfort level and starts hitting. I don't see how it could hurt. In hindsight, it seems pretty absurd that Beckham was moved to open up a spot for Teahen.

I would have liked to see what an OF of Quentin, De Aza, and Viciedo could have done. I was all for picking up Rios at the time, but having that guy on the roster continues to drag the team down. If Rios and his lousy contract weren't on the roster we'd likely see the OF mentioned above and Quentin's salary wouldn't have been as big an issue. I can't remember ever hating a baseball player as much as I do Rios.

The only thing that makes me think Braun may right is that ESPN never let's facts get in the way of a sensational story, but we'll see. However, I don't usually buy the player's, or agent's lame excuses. NOtice they said "didn't intentionally take" which suggest he did take something and they are trying use the un-intentional excuse.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 01:49 PM) Great post. Why all of a sudden are closers devalued by our fans? Who the hell is going to close? And close effectively? We give away Santos who is affordable for some guy who might be a middle of the rotation starter someday. Weird. Somebody will close. At this time last year nobody was looking at Santos as a closer and now he's irreplaceable????? The Sox have had pretty good succes at finding guys to close. Next year shouldn't be any different.
