White Sox select three in Rule 5 Draft
witesoxfan replied to greasywheels121's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 07:17 PM) I was worried I'd never see Tim Hummel again. That Scott Sullivan deal is looking better and better every day. -
QUOTE(Frank the Tank 35 @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 08:51 PM) If all they wanted was Garland and Uribe, I'd jump at it in a second. If all I wanted was 1 ice cream cone, I'd take it. But what if someone offered me 3 ice cream cones for the same price?

QUOTE(Benchwarmerjim @ Dec 8, 2005 -> 07:42 PM) Hank Blaylock or Terry Tiffee/Mike Cuddyer/Juan Castro/whoever else they can dig up from the grave GLENN WILLIAMS alert!

I dunno...I wouldn't mind seeing Borchard get a crack. Maybe increase his value a little, maybe see him take well to the task and become huge. It doesn't hurt to see Timo gone though. Pretty much worse than mediocre all around.

On the surface, I absolutely hate this trade. This is way, way, way below market value for Marte, even if he's coming off a bad year. If a pitching coach can work with him a little bit and help him get his control and command back, he's a top 3-5 lefty in the league again with ease. If the Sox sign Myers...it won't be as bad. A good utility man for a reliever, when the market for relievers is up...KW should have, at the very least, gotten another prospect in return.

Padres trade Sean Burroughs for Dewon Brazelton

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 02:09 PM) It would be the other way around. ^^^ -
QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 7, 2005 -> 12:27 AM) Since I'm not very immersed in the Cubs minor league system, can someone please tell me whether these two prospects (Nolasco and Pinto) are valuable commodities? I've never heard of either. Hopefully, Quasimodo won't wiggle himself out of drastically overpaying for Pierre. Since Pittsburgh isn't involved, and there aren't large contracts and worthless players named Bobby Hill to unload, perhaps a valuable prospect will have to be delt. Unless you count the immortal Sergio Mitre valuable prospect, it may not be likely. Per Rotoworld... I figure Florida's gotta be able to get a better offer than that somewhere.

QUOTE(WSFAN35 @ Dec 6, 2005 -> 11:20 PM) Lofton wouldn't be signed as a starter. If anything he'd be Timo's replacement in the outfield. I personally think he's a much better option than Perez. So is Borchard at about a 6th of the cost.

Yes, Addy, I am a sentimental hokey guy like that. Afterall, the Bills traded for Thurman Thomas, just to have him retire as a Bill. I kind of liked that. Interesting note...though I'm sure the media will overlook it because Beane is a god( )...the A's are also in the lead for David Wells, or so says Peter Gammons. Thomas and Wells reunited...how fun would that be?
-
Not shocked in the least. Frank Thomas is the prototype/stereotypical Moneyball player...takes walks, hits for power, hits for a solid average, can't play defense. Gonna be weird seeing him in that piss and puke though. I think or hope everyone here wishes Frank nothing but the best. Also Addy...I, personally dont want him retiring as an Oakland Athletic. I want him retiring as a Chicago White Sox.

If you were the Colts...
witesoxfan replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
I have a thought. Would the Colts consider playing their starters until they build up a lead, let the starters rest while they still have the lead, and if the game were to get close, to then put the starters back in? Would they be rusty if having to go in late in a game? Would other coaches take offense to that? Would they even consider it? It's not like the Colts are playing pushovers the last 3 weeks - in fact, it's quite the opposite. Aside from I believe Arizona, they play 3 playoff teams, though Jacksonville is without Leftwich. -
Burroughs for Marte sucks. Can you talk about a team getting hosed any more than the Sox are in that deal? Burroughs' value has fallen tremendously with multiple acquisitions in the past year or so, to go along with hitting very poorly in the majors and then being flat out demoted...his value is at probably an all-time low right now. Marte's value is up- not because of the season he had, but because of his contract status and his talent, and being LH doesn't hurt either. You, at the very least, have to get another good prospect in return with Burroughs, preferably MI/C/SP, probably in that order...though I am completely unfamiliar with San Diego's farm system.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 04:01 PM) My reason is that in the games I say from him this year, he didn't look that good and his swing was terrible. Plus everyone on this board feels Owens is higher on the depth charts then Anderson to begin with. I'd rather go with experience over a rookie, for this season. As far as ceiling goes... 1) Young 2) Sweeney 3) Anderson 4) Owens As far as fulfilling projections and expectations goes... 1) Anderson 2) Owens 3) Young 4) Sweeney Perhaps JMO, perhaps the opinion of many on Soxtalk. Given, those are all arguable, but atleast for me, I see Anderson above Owens on both lists. So no, I don't like Owens more than Anderson. I personally view Anderson, at his best, as a .290-.300, 15-25 HR, 60-90 RBI, .775-.850 OPS, 15-25 SB type player with gold glove defense, where as I view Owens as a .290-.310 5-10 HR, 30-50 RBI, .675-.750 OPS, 45-55 SB type player with good, but not stellar defense. I also figure Anderson is more MLB ready than any of the Sox other OFers, due to Sweeney, Young, and Owens both playing in AA last year while Anderson was mostly in AAA and had a few ABs in the majors. Anderson also adjusts rather quickly, so I think you'll see a relatively quick transition to MLB pitching for him.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Dec 3, 2005 -> 02:14 AM) The story about Blake is true. He was buying a CD player and some other gifts (probably for friends and family). Umm ok. What you said about me is not true. And i have this to say to you about Orton (who you think should be replaced once Grossman is healthy)You will be wrong about Orton. Grossman is just as unproven. Anybody who thinks that Grossman would make a huge difference to the Bears offense is on the bong. Rex Grossman is a better QB than Orton is...the only thing that's unproven about him is his health. If he were able to stay healthy, the Bears would be considered the favorite in the NFC, instead of it being a mix of teams that could make it to the Superbowl.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 06:19 PM) They're both fast white guys....same! The Bears should just sign Scott Podsednik while they're at it.
-
If I had to bet...absolutely had to...I'd bet on USC. Push come to shove, it's a pretty equal matchup. I'll go out on a limb here and say the team that scores the most points will win. What's interesting about a comment that Vince Young has no experience in big games is that it's untrue...any Michigan fans remember what happened last year?

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 01:29 PM) No DRays, so no dice. The last OOTP league I was in, my second year I had TB 100-62. You're welcome. It's ok though...I just so happened to win the World Series that same year, so I was just fine and dandy with it.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 02:47 PM) Sorry to burst your bubble guys, I don't think Brian Anderson is a player....Hopefully they trade for Pierre. lol

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 12:35 AM) If any collectors show up at the Yankees' door, they can just send him out to spear them, pick them up, slam them down, and bust their noses. FEAR THE SPEAR! Now we need Farnsworth's face photoshopped onto there.
-
QUOTE(hotlanta13 @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 12:47 AM) The reported offers for Molina and Hernandez were 3-4 years for Varitek kind of money. That doesn't make the LoDuca deal any better but the alternatives not as impressive. If either Molina or Hernandez makes Jason Varitek money, I'm gonna scream
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 11:33 PM) That team is definitely a mess right now, they have a lot of work to do to get themselves back into the title picture imo. Thankfully, they have Kyle Farnsworth to fix all of their problems on the pitching side of the ball.

I'd imagine this move is replacing Millwood, and they'll either bring up an arm from the minors to replace Elarton, or they'll resign Elarton. Elarton seems underrated to me. For all the s*** the guy takes, he did put up an ERA of under 4 and WHIPs of 1.10 or lower in 3 of the last 4 months of the season(unless his October start against the Sox changes his Sept/Oct numbers, and it very well could have - it was a pretty bad start) I look for him to have a pretty solid year next year...10-14 wins, ERA in the 4.00-4.50 range with 200 innings...or in other words a pretty solid #4 pitcher.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 4, 2005 -> 06:46 PM) I love rotoworld: According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs could make a serious run at A.J. Burnett after losing out on Rafael Furcal. Well, he's probably a better hitter than Neifi Perez, but can he really play shortstop? The Cardinals and Blue Jays appear to be the top suitors for Burnett at the moment, though the Mets, Nationals, Rangers and Mariners could also be in the running. They were full of solid lines today. In fact, this whole offseason has been awesome for the most part. The Ponson thing was awesome, they took a shot at the A's for signing Loaiza(Jose Lima had a good outing in Winter Ball, and they suggested the A's were smart for signing Loaiza now because Lima's assured to get $8-9 mill a year based off of one winter league outing), and they took at shot at Sammy today when he said several teams are interested...something along the lines of "It's too bad most of them were from the Atlantic League."
