QUOTE(Felix @ Oct 9, 2005 -> 10:54 AM) 1b is the most important defensive position on the field. No argument you can make can back this argument up. There are 3 positions you can argue - C, SS, and CF - and that's it. Catcher because if you have a good defensive catcher, you have a guy blocking passed balls, throwing out baserunners, and, if you include it, being a good game caller too. A good SS will get to balls hit up the middle, hit in the hole, and will be able to make crazy tough plays...he stops many a base hit. CF if the most important simply because he has the most ground to cover in CF, and he has the rights to basically any flyball he wants to. I don't even play baseball anymore - havent in 3-4 years - and I still remember that.

Semi-old topic, and this is going off the course of the main topic right now, but... How about Mark Ellis? Injured last year, from what I have heard, was almost forced to retire due to nerve damage in his arm, and came back and hit very well to the tune of .316 13 52 .384/.477/.861 in about 480 PAs. Add to that he's from South Dakota, albeit f***in Rapid City who is has a legion team that is just something f***in ridiculous(I think Post 320), so there is a little bit of hometown pride in me for him having a season like that. Not your typical comeback player of the year, because he exceeded everything...but Esteban Loaiza didn't comeback from anything either in 03, and he had a very solid year, so I figured I'd throw it out there.

Kind of funny...Aaron Small was undefeated in the regular season. Come postseason time, he receives his first loss of the year in what is probably the 2nd most crucial game up to this point in the year...the most crucial being tomorrow.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 02:37 AM) Damon will sign with the Yankees. It's basically a done-deal already. Good Shave that f***in beard off. And cut his hair to. I like shaggy hair...I don't like long, straight hair. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 03:44 AM) The 3rd strike to Damn is one of those moments I'll never forget. That is saying something right there.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 03:12 AM) Do i really have to show them a picture of what you look like period? :puke Do not. Their computers will overload with utter sexiness.

QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 02:24 AM) I would be fine with that too.....please do not misunderstand the motive for this post. I completely understand how Manny does not fit in our clubhouse, but I do also want us to be a year in and year out contender.....if we can add Giles, that would be super cool with me I would venture to guess that next year, the Sox will probably have the same roster, minus Everett, perhaps dropping Timo, adding Anderson, and perhaps a 5th OFer if Timo is dropped, and Thomas will most likely be viewed as the added hitter, while Anderson will take up the Everett role. They'll have money to spend...but I see a lot of resignings, and not as many additions.

I have an idea...albeit a very wild one. Why not have Garland throw an inning out of the pen in game 1 at some point, no matter the situation? Get him into the game, get him some work, get him in the playoff mix. When he then starts game 4, his arm will not be at 100% in arm strength, but will be completely healthy, thus making his sinker quite heavy, inducing quite a few groundballs. You want a time for a no-no in the playoffs...that's it. A sinkerballer who is focused as hell and will not make a mistake due to his team needing him to win the game who is also on short rest...there is potential for unhittableness.
-
QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 02:21 AM) but I really want us to add one more bat in the offseason I just wish we could add one of the most underrated hitters in all of baseball...that of course being Brian Giles.

I have one that I am stealing from YAS from like way, way back, but rewording it slightly. "Only one team has Sox on their uniform"

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 02:04 AM) Ozzie could change his mind. But I don't see a major difference in if it's Garland/Contreras or Contreras/Garland. I do. Game 1 is a tone setter. We KNOW Contreras will be lights out and will put up a huge game, almost a guaranteed W. Garland is iffy at this point...he was very good in the 2-3 weeks of the season, but very mediocre prior to that. Add to that I'm not a fan of having a sinkerballer start on about 7 days rest, due to his sinker flattening out...kind of scares me.
-
He is the opposite of everything this organization, at the current moment, is built upon. The Sox are a speed-defense-pitching team first mentality, game in and game out busting ass and never stopping till the final out is made. Ramirez is slow, lazy, horrible in the outfield, and very egotistical. That being said...I'd love him as a DH just due to him being such an unbelievably good hitter...but I'd probably pull my hair out watching him stare at f***in homers, and then getting a single on a ball to the gap.

I havent shaved in like 5 days. I am not much of a facial hair guy, so I just look funny with this peach fuzz all over my face. Hell, I will just go as far as saying I do not look good at all with facial hair.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 8, 2005 -> 01:10 AM) I'm guessing you've verified with A.J. on this one? Either way, the replay made it look intentional, and Hawk and DJ certainly thought it was. If he wanted to make it intentional, he would not have spread out his weight as he did by holding his arms out to his side. He would have just stepped the f*** right onto his back and dug in. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 7, 2005 -> 11:48 PM) The guy is one of the best centerfielders in the game, his fifteen minutes are not up. However, its been every single series that he's come out with the same old bs, and if there are positives from my perspective as a Red Sox fan, its that today was Damons last game in a Red Sox uniform. Edmonds? Beltran? Jones? Sizemore? Wells? Hunter? Clark? Griffey? Dejesus? I would probably take all above Damon, either considering how they are now offensively, how they will be within a couple years offensively, all things considered on the field, or all things considered including money. Damon is good...but he's not among the best CFers in the game. And lucky for him he signed with Boston, became a media lovebug, and will now sign somewhere for a ridiculous amount and be incredibly overpaid. -
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 11:22 PM) I still don't think the Colts will win the Super Bowl. I do The Steelers are good, but just don't strike me as a Superbowl team. New England is very much down this year, and losing Weis and Crennell is hurting more than they thought. I don't see Philadelphia winning it because I don't invision McNabb playing all year. I also see Cinci tailing off a little too. Indy has the offense, and they apparently have a good defense too. I think they have to be the favorites at this point.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 11:37 PM) Anthrax puts the angels up 4-2 in the 7th. lol

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 09:26 PM) unbelievable, ozzie hasnt proved to you yet that he's a great manager? Jeez, what else does it take? I guess a world series victory? Timo Perez was the leadoff hitter the majority of the time while Podsednik was on the DL. 'Nuff said. ...but yes, a World Series victory would be nice. Hell, a World Series appearance would be nice.

QUOTE(Tadahito Iguchi @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 11:13 PM) Iguchi with his biggest career at bat tonight, came up huge just givin a shout out to my boy, not that there hasn't been already! GO sox!!!!!!!! His career isn't over yet. These playoffs aren't over yet.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 10:48 PM) Wite, I'm sort of interested to see what Beane is going to do with Zito. He could quite possibly ask for, and get, an arm and a leg for him -- if Zito were a FA this year, he'd be one of the best, certainly the top lefty. The Mulder trade looks spectacular -- the Huddy trade, not so much. Meyer is going to have to come back from his injury, or that trade will look pretty bad... I'm looking for him to trade Zito. I see Oakland needing a starter next year and perhaps some more power in the middle of the lineup. Crosby, when fully healthy, is probably a 25 homer .825 OPS guy, Swisher will probably be improve next year as well, and Dan Johnson looks solid as hell. Chavez is money, and there are a number of players who could play better next year(with the first one off the top of my head being Kendall...a sub .700 OPS after putting up around .815 in 03 and .789 in 04). They add 1 more hitter, and have a full rotation, and they will be very scary again. Agreed very much on the Mulder trade...Calero again had a very solid year, Haren with 14 wins and a 3.73 ERA in his first full year, and Barton had a very solid year in the minors. And again, very much agreed on the Huddy trade. Thomas has done pretty much nothing for Oakland, Cruz has been horrible...Meyer will have to be good, or that trade will look quite bad. EDIT: One thing I wanted to mention. If the A's are in the market for a DH/1B type this offseason, and the Sox are to let go of Gload, I could very well see Gload winding up in Oakland. I've thought that for a while. A lot depends on what happens with Hatteberg.

QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 10:49 PM) It's pathetic. ESPN never ceases to amaze me. I know. Their constant slurping of everything Red Sox and Yankees pisses me off too.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 05:01 PM) They looked pretty bad on paper I said before the season that they should be one of the surprising teams, and were very underrated

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 10:07 PM) http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?showtopic=1036&st=980 Told ya so. How sad is your rotation when your top 2 starters are an inconsistent knuckler and a 38 y/o starter that has made 11 starts this year and has an ERA of 5.69?
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 10:06 PM) money won't be a factor. Dustin Pedroia, making the league minimum, will be the starting second baseman next season. Of course Hanley Ramirez is another option. The point remains that Graffy won't be starting next year in Boston
-
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Oct 5, 2005 -> 09:55 PM) I hope you're not saying he won't be tendered a contract because the error tonight... No, he won't be tendered a contract because the Red Sox have a gazillion dollars and will not have a mediocre 2Bman back next year. The error won't help him though.
