  1. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 5, 2005 -> 10:44 PM) Would you rather have this guy for $8.5 million next year? If B-Mac is lights out in Charlotte this season and again in 2006 Spring Training, then by all means trade Contreras. I would definately trade him for Adrian Gonzalez or Ryan Howard and if Contreras pitches the way he is currently over the entire season, I think those two teams might be willing to make those deals as well. The Rangers are especially desperate for a quality starting pitcher with good stuff, hence why they were interested in Carrie Woods. For God's sakes, they have Pedro Astacio and Chan Ho Park in their starting rotation. With Mark Teixeira at 1st base, I don't see why they wouldn't want to trade Adrian Gonzalez for a starting pitcher. First of all, Milton was one of the worst signings of the offseason, period. Thousands saw that coming. Secondly, you can't trade Contreras right before, during, or after ST. If you are going to commit to BMac for 06, you're going to commit to him in November, and if you're not, you keep Contreras. It's that simple. Finally, even though you didn't mention it in the post, it has been brought up...I am not a fan of having 60% or more of the payroll tied up in the rotation. I would say 50% at the very most, and preferably, between 35-45% is preferred.

  4. QUOTE(Cerbaho-WG @ May 2, 2005 -> 04:30 PM) The Sox organization has to be very cautious when it comes to Garland and not make the same mistake that they did by resigning Rowand. Garland is only five starts into the season and we all know anything could happen in the remained of his 27 starts. Garland hasn't had a track record for doing fantastic at the big league level, and it is Garland's contract year after all. I'd shy away from throwing any money at Jon for the forseeable future. Cerb, I find a lot of your stuff very insightful, but this post, quite honestly, just pisses me off to no extent. First of all, have you not watched Garland pitch? The guy is pitching his ass off, and his stuff actually looks pretty good. It is not unusual for a pitcher to finally figure it out and just start pitching his ass off. It may not be wise to lock him up to anything more than $7 mill a year, but if the Sox could lock him up to a 3 or 4 year contract at $18-24 mill after having proven he is a different pitcher by having a full, very good season for the Sox. I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. However, it was not that Garland part that pissed me off. Your constant ragging on Aaron Rowand pisses me off to no end. You are kicking him while he is down, when it has been stated over and over again that he is a very poor hitter in April, and always has been. Be it his .125 or worse campaign to start the year in 03, his .268/.453/.721 last year, or his .295/.326/.621 this year. Don't consider that his worst career OPS outside of April is .729(which he puts up in May), which, while not very good, is not horrible by any means. I can understand that you wouldn't like the guy. But don't hate on him and the Sox just because of that. You have to realize that his contract is very affordable, even if he only puts up .270 20 70 .775, and I can almost guarantee he will put up better than that. Give him time, and he'll work it out.
  5. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 5, 2005 -> 09:12 PM) Ummm, Contreras is under contract for 2006 and we will only be paying him around $6 million. With the way Contreras can pitch when he actually goes after batters and the ridiculously inflated price of quality starting pitchers, Contreras is going nowhere. $6 million is a steal for a pitcher with his stuff, as long as AJ keeps threatening to kick him in the balls if he doesn't hit the plate. IIRC, $6 mill this year, $8 mill next year. $8 mill is getting up there in money, especially when there is a hell of a good chance you will need to get a new 1Bman, or at the very least, resign the one you currently have, along with potentially filling needs in the bullpen and paying for new guys coming in at the trade deadline who have 1 more year on their contract...of course, that would be figured out later, assuming KW were to make a trade, and I have no idea why he wouldn't. When you have Contreras at $8 mill potentially putting up 15 wins and a 3.50 ERA, but also potentially putting up another dud season and going 12 wins 5.00, or BMac at $300,000 putting up 12 wins and a 4.50 ERA, or perhaps even better, you are faced with a seemlingly tough decision that I find very easy to make. You trade Contreras while his value is still high for the most you can get(like perhaps a stud 1B prospect in Adrian Gonzalez I believe his name is from Texas, or perhaps Ryan Howard from Philly, among others, or maybe you fill out needs on the current MLB team, though I am not sure which needs the Sox will have...depending on what they do with Shingo and the rest of the pen, perhaps some bullpen arms). Contreras should be the odd man out after this season, period.
  6. Bracelets = aweshum idea I still need one though They are still selling them, right?
  7. QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 5, 2005 -> 06:32 PM) I love Ozuna's bat but I saw enough of him at 3B in Spring Training and this season to know that he is not a good defensive 3rd baseman. If Crede goes down, we have no one who can play solid defense at 3rd base. For starters, Uribe-Harris-Goochi or Uribe-Ozuna-Goochi, while not good, is serviceable for the time being...and you can mix and match your way to whichever combo you like best. JM would have had a blast. Secondly, Crede never is out. He plays hurt if he has to. He is a gritty SOB. Finally... WIDGE, goddammit
  8. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ May 5, 2005 -> 05:27 PM) there were so many other rookies that had better stats than duhon, he started off really bad, and thats what did it to him, same with noc in my books they are all first teamers I am thinking more along the lines of 'what have you done for me lately?', and lately, Chris Duhon has been THE f***ing man, while Deng has been sitting down.
  9. Passes it to the man, and boom goes the dynamite. And apparently 3 of the starters on the All-American College Baseball team are Andrew Bogot, Wayne Summers, and Hegim Warrick. WHO KNEW?
  10. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 5, 2005 -> 05:16 PM) I would have to agree. These ESPN threads are gonna make my head explode. Boom goes the dynamite?
  11. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 5, 2005 -> 04:46 PM) Eye surgery...you inconsiderate asshole. OK but I do not like the asshole part, so :finger :fyou
  12. Maybe he will still kill the interleague rival this year too. One can only hope. Man, I love Carlos. Really sucks that he had to be traded, but I can't say that I'm not happy with the results. He was probably one of the my favorite players on the Sox.
  13. How is Deng first team? I mean he was good, but he was like physically not there for like the last month or two of the season.
  14. What is Hawkaroo doing? Taking a really long old man poo, or golfing, or what?
  15. Carl Everett - A Paul Konerko - D Ross Gload - INC Willie Harris - B Tadahito Iguchi - A Juan Uribe - C Joe Crede - A A.J. Pierzinski - B Chris Widger - B Scott Podsednik - B Aaron Rowand - D Jermaine Dye - D- Timo Perez - D- Pablo Ozuna - B Mark Buerhle - B Freddy Garcia - A Jose Contreras - B Orlando Hernandez - B Jon Garland - A Cliff Polite - A Neal Cotts - B Luis Vizcaino - C Damaso Marte - B Dustin Hermanson - A Shingo Takatsu - D Note that the only +/-...only used the -...were on Timo and Dye. Dye gets it simply because he helped us win a key game and I think it was one of the reasons this team has started off as hot as it has. I honestly think that if he does not hit that homer, we could be looking at a 16-12 team right now, and while 16-12 is not bad by any stretch of the imagination, it is not 21-7. That homer against Cleveland seemed to set the attitude for this team, never saying die until the 27th out is recorded. And Timo gets a D- because he had a squeeze bunt that was cool ass s***.
  16. QUOTE(ptatc @ May 5, 2005 -> 04:29 PM) I meant to bold it, just habit I guess. But as you can see by the reply, it's the response I expected. "Them's all the same to me" I understand why you did it...I think To me, it seemed like instead of you wanting to make your point valid and true, which it still is, you wanted to inject a little humor into it, making sure everyone understands it, thus the green.
  17. So it takes a 21-7 start and leading at some point in all 28 games for them to change their mind? Something about how like the 5 behind the Sox in that leading-game category all won atleast 92 games or so probably helps influence that too. And Harold is of course wrong if he said that if the Sox played .500 baseball the rest of the way they'd win 90 games. Simple math says 88-74.
  18. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ May 5, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) cocky...i guess thats what i was leaning towards and he is good but to bring him in for one year is foolish Uh, he's signed through 2010. Anyways, I'd agree that the types Georgey will be looking to dump will be the 35 and older crowd. Sheff, Flash, and Womack as KW-OK said, and I wouldn't be surprised if he fielded offers for Brown, RJ, Bernie, perhaps Mo, Moose, Stanton, and maybe more. You won't see the left side of the infield being changed, I can almost guarantee you that.
  19. QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ May 5, 2005 -> 03:56 PM) i hope we dont trade curry, we dont have any draft picks i believe so that would hurt us I'd imagine if Curry were involved in a trade, a draft pick or 2 - or more - would be involved. Paxson wouldn't trade him for depth when the Bulls are one of the deeper teams in the league.
  20. They are just copying the greatest school evar by changing their team name to a color.
  21. Resigning an average pitcher to a long term deal is dumb, even if he is young. His numbers got worse, and he was proving more and more to be a headcase type. Just gotta hope they can get him resigned in the offseason or at some other point next year, because he does appear to have figured it out.
  22. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ May 2, 2005 -> 08:00 PM) If not Clemens, how about this guy as another pitcher really worth looking into Jason Schmidt with the Giants. They should be out of it and they will be dumping their AARP team. On a similar note, if he is healthy and has shown to be productive, how about Moises Alou for LF....move Pods to CF to take over from the inconsistent Rowand Let Carl play RF until he breaks an arm or something....then move Dye or Rowand there I know we are just throwing out ideas, but to be quite honest, some of yours have been not so good. Castilla is old, costs a ton of money, and is producing right now for Washington. Considering everything, even if Castilla outproduces Crede numbers wise, Crede is still better than Castilla...younger, cheap for a little while anyways, more value if needed to be moved. Then again, I don't like Castilla a lot - not many on here do either though. Rhodes is in Cleveland. I doubt the Sox trade with Cleveland, even if they are out of it. Cleveland is still an up and coming franchise, and the Sox will not want to help them out in the future. While I absolutely love Schmidt, he would cost an arm and a leg, and that is not something the Sox can afford to give up. They are playing outstanding baseball right now, and the rotation should not be f***ed with, unless Duque gets hurt, or Contreras starts to f*** up. I don't see MB or Garcia being bad in the near future, and Garland has finally figured s*** out. They have probably the top rotation in the AL right now, and possibly the top 1-2-3 in the AL as well. (also, to get Schmidt, it would cost atleast McCarthy and Anderson...a price too high to pay when starting pitching is not a need, or even something that could be upgraded a ton) And, quite honestly, I absolutely hate the thought of Alou. Not that I wouldn't mind his bat, but we have absolutely no room for another OFer. We already have Pods, Rowand, Dye, and Everett, we have Timo has the should-be 5th OFer, Willie can play a little OF as can Gload and Ozuna, and with Sweeney and Anderson in the minors, along with Owens and Young, there are about 6-8 starters in that group and 4 reserve OFers...so no. If Frank can't come back this year, and we could package like Dye, Young, and Diaz plus cash for a substantial upgrade in RF, then by all means do it. I just don't see that happening at all. I honestly see the only upgrade, right now, being in the pen, with that upgrade probably being Wagner. And, quite honestly, I think he is attainable too. You'd end up having to give up a stud prospect not named McCarthy in the deal, but that is not a huge problem at all, considering the depth the Sox have in the OF. I could also see an upgrade/paycut/both being made at 1B potentially too, but I just don't think they will dump Konerko midseason.
  23. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 2, 2005 -> 03:35 PM) Remind me when I compared those guys to the best pitcher to have ever played the game? My memory fails me. Arguably the best pitcher to have ever played in the game. His career WHIP of 1.13, while very good considering he started 815 games, is not completely and utterly dominant. And, while he won 511 games, the most of all time and an unbreakable mark, he has also lost the most games of all time too. When you pitch 906 games, start 815 games, and throw 749 career complete games, you're going to win and lose a lot of games, period. I could find pitchers that one could argue that are better than Young with ease, so to say that he is the drop dead best pitcher of all time is completely wrong. (and I know they have the pitcher of the year award named after him...that means absolutely nothing to me, quite honestly. This is one case were statistics can prove me right)

  25. Cubs regretting letting an overpaid pitcher go? No. They actually did make the right call letting Clement go This year, his ERA is 4.00, his WHIP if 1.61, his K/9 is less then 1, his BB/9 is almost 4.5, and he has been lucky enough to be pitching for a team with an offense as explosive as the Red Sox. His 5.09 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and his HR/9 of just under 2 is not a good sign. Wood is not looking so good...looking like a stupid person and a stupid player, not adjusting like Stoney suggested he do. But suggesting that the Cubs are dumb for letting go of Clement is incredible.
