  1. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 08:34 AM) We will find out soon enough. I can see the Sox giving Wilkins a shot the last two months to get more of an idea if he's the guy to replace Dunn when Dunn is gone which is why I can see the Sox releasing Dunn some time in august. Hopefully Dunn is traded at the deadline, even if the Sox have to chip in a few bucks. I think they already know that he's not. He has some history of walking, but his ability to draw walks in AAA has been virtually non-existent, and he's never really been a guy to hit for average. Players like that have a tendency to end up as bench players in the majors or they end up moving between AAA and the majors a lot and eventually finds themselves playing in Asia. His numbers this year remind me a lot of Brett Pill. Wilkins is a bit different because he's left handed, so he's going to have more value due to the platoon difference and the ability to hit more pitchers, but I honestly don't think there's any chance Wilkins is the answer to the DH long term.
  2. QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 08:02 AM) Just a guess but if Dunn has not been traded come august, he will be released to allow for a Wilkins call up. I highly doubt this. The Sox will work to make a trade prior to the deadline, but they'd likely just put him on waivers and if someone claims him, they'd likely let him go.
  3. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 07:56 PM) The fact that he's survived all these years with essentially 2 pitches (1 slightly below average fastball, and a devastating change) speaks volumes for how good that change in speeds really is. Now he's lost a few ticks and I think command of a 2nd off-spread pitch would revive his excellence. He can't live on that outside edge anymore at 88. He's always thrown a pretty good cutter too. He's basically been fastball, cutter, change up. When he was in the minors, and even a little in the majors, he flashed a fairly decent curve ball too, but he just doesn't throw it that often anymore.
  4. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 04:48 PM) That's an.......interesting question. You seem like a brilliant man. I can't wait to hear you explain it. Do you have a youtube clip of your lecture series? It's fielding independent pitching. As such, it tries to characterize the performance of a pitcher based on peripherals, how a pitcher "should, theoretically, be pitching." It is not exact. When considering future performance, I like to look at FIP and xFIP, but it should be taken with a grain of salt. Typically, FIP will be more consistent over time and provide a more accurate portrayal, but there are also times when it's consistency is it's downfall as it does have a tendency to be less extreme. In the instance of Edwin Jackson, it's hard to believe that he would improve much based on his numbers over the last year and a half, considering how poor it's been this year while his xFIP continues to trend upwards. It should also be taken into context with ERA. Simply saying "player's FIP and xFIP are this" doesn't really tell me a whole lot. Put this way, if you had 1 game to start, and you had to choose Tyler Skaggs or Hiroki Kuroda, who would you choose?
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 03:56 PM) Guess who is not in the lineup tonight? JERMAINE DYE
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) Doug Padilla ‏@ESPNChiSox 4m Flowers' wife had a baby after last night's game. He won't start but is expected be here at game time. #TeamPlayer #KnowWhatMattersMost
  7. s*** I'm as old as Abreu and I get tired as s*** from playing softball one night a week.
  8. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 02:57 PM) Yikes, I feel like Conor would just call for fastballs high and inside to get back at the cruel cruel world. It's a good thing Conor wasn't playing catcher over Barrett when AJ got punched in the face. He would shoot icy daggers at him and AJ would be obligated to apologize for his unruly actions of being himself.
  9. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) Am i crazy to think that Wilkins should be brought up since he's having a good year, so that even if they don't trade Dunn, he could platoon with Dunn the rest of the year, just to give Wilkins his cup of coffee? Platooning a lefty with a lefty seems rather silly.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) Trade Sale, trade Q, trade Abreu. Headley was a one year wonder apparently. But constantly trading good players just because you aren't going to win in a year or two usually means you will remain non-competitive for a lot longer than that. I'm talking about trading guys like Peavy. It's a case by case basis, but in 3 years, if the Sox have a bad team with no real shot to contend in the next two years, I would advocate trading Sale. I think we've seen as fans that the Sox are fairly close to competitiveness.
  11. Remember when Chase Headley was going to cost your entire minor league system? This is a pretty good example of why you try to trade guys coming off good years while you are relatively non-competitive.
  12. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) Milone's ERA on the road is nearly a run and a half higher than it is at home for his career, with awful peripherals to match. Take him out of the Coliseum, and he's a really bad pitcher. In general, pitchers pitch better at their home ballpark. Milone will pitch even better than that at the Coliseum because it is a pitcher's ball park. It doesn't mean he'd be a gas can if he were to pitch in a hitter's park. He'd adjust to his surroundings and he'd be a fairly good pitcher. Is it because he doesn't fit your vision of a pitcher? Mid 90s, great secondary stuff, big K's, low walks? You seem to be singing the same tune for John Danks yet suggested the Sox trade Danks for Edwin Jackson.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 11:57 AM) Ughhghg can't wait for camp fodder news. If it helps satisfy the craving, Jeff Tuel and Thad Lewis are going to battle for the Bills #2 QB job.
  14. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 11:14 AM) I feel like the Mets and White Sox are screwed here if the Cardinals, Royals, Rockies, Padres, and Athletics are eligible. Frankly, the Cubs too. It doesn't make a lick of sense to me that teams in small markets get these picks as opposed to bad teams. It would be like if the Packers got an extra 3rd round pick every single season (although it would be the tits if the Bills got an extra 3rd every year)
  15. QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 11:03 AM) Good or bad is subjective. It's like asking is morality relative or universal. An honor killing could be considered a good act by some and bad by others. No black and white, just grey. That's kind of the point. There is no definition, so I think it would be cool to see what percentage of people are "good" in the eyes of the people.
  16. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) I know it's not significantly different. I'd expect that to change. Per DRS, Buehrle has saved over 7 runs over average per season. Milone has a little over 1 per. Buehre has allowed a stolen base once every 52 innings. Milone once every 21. That's two pretty damn good reasons why Buehrle significantly overperforms his peripherals. What's the reason for Milone? And fwiw, Milone in the minors: 2008 - FIP: 3.26, ERA: 3.51 2009 - FIP: 2.59, ERA: 2.89 2010 - FIP: 3.53, ERA: 2.91 2011 - FIP: 2.28, ERA: 3.22 I'm not even saying he wouldn't be nice to have, I'm commenting solely on the use of Buerhle in terms of judging peripherals. Because he comes from the Tom Glavine school of pitching. Get the ball in play with no one on, screw the nails to the wall and pitch for weak contact with men on and in scoring position. Bases empty - .264/.301/.448 Men on base - .258/.315/.389 RISP - .228/.302/.354 The RISP does seem as though it's due for a bit of regression, as that's only a 113 IP sample size, but, as the ISO's indicate in both OBP and SLG, he slows down a lot and pitches away from hitters with runners on base.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:47 AM) 99.9999% Of course you knew that was going to be in there.
  18. Just because I'm curious to see what people believe.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) The victim in the "slender man" attempted murder has received over $50k in gifts, plus a veterans purple heart. While certain people may dominate the news, 99% of the world is great people. We shouldn't lose sight of that. http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/wisco...lFlowFB_CHBrand I don't know about 99%, but it makes for an interesting poll.
  20. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) No. The whole point of having Konerko this year is nostalgia. The Sox just can't seem to cut ties with him for whatever reason. If Konerko had retired, there would be no platoon. They would not have filled his role with anybody else. Dunn would be playing everyday. It was to act as a mentor and to act as a platoon partner against lefties because Dunn is terrible against lefties. The power remains but any sign of hitting for average that he had goes out the wayside. This was said from the outset.
  21. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:34 AM) Buehrle is almost freakishly capable of pitching better than his peripherals because he's one of the best defensive pitchers ever and he completely shuts down the running game. People need to stop using him in discussions on the usefulness or otherwise of peripherals. Not at all. Guys outperform their FIPs all the time, especially soft-tossers. Buehrle's career ERA of 3.80 - a difference of .32 - is not significantly different. It's not a stretch to assume that Milone could put up an ERA of 3.75-4.00, especially considering his FIP this year appears inflated overall (career FIP 4.14/xFIP 4.20 in 468.2 IP). Even so, are people here really THAT opposed to acquiring a guy that could put up a 4.25-4.50 ERA who is entering his prime and under team control for the next 3 years?
  22. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:19 AM) If you do not understand FIP, I don't know what to tell you. Do you understand FIP?
  23. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 10:17 AM) FIP of 4.43, xFIP of 4.51. One Danks is enough. Mark Buehrle's career FIP is 4.12 and his xFIP is 4.21. Are you telling me you wouldn't like him? Milone is young, cost controlled, and good. Just because he is a guy who pitches to contact - hence, the higher FIP and xFIP - doesn't make him a bad pitcher. He would be a welcome addition to the pitching staff.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 22, 2014 -> 08:23 AM) Pizza's delivered with 99.9999% accuracy fixed
  25. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 21, 2014 -> 11:56 PM) Jackson was good the first 1/2 year we had him. He wasn't very good the next year. And since that 1/2 year, he's been not very good except for his year with the Nationals. Retreading these guys and hoping for deja vu is pointless. And of course the trade that brought him here in the first place was ridiculous on every level. Move Danks. But get some young talent, please. He was perfectly fine the second year he was he here. Please check again.
