QUOTE (peavy44 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 12:06 PM) matt wieters is alot like flowers Wieters is a much better player than Flowers and much more talented. He's also represented by Scott Boras, which means the extension would b e a 1 year deal or a huge multi year contract. There's no trade value there and the O's have no reason to try and trade him if they'd like to keep him.

Give them Wang

Maybe he truly does not regret anything he did, but it would be tough as hell for me to realize that I gave up the opportunity to make 2100% more than my current salary.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 10:03 AM) Any relation to Ed? No idea. Karsten Whitson was drafted 9th overall by the San Diego Padres in 2010. He was offered a bonus of $2.1 mill. He declined with rumors suggesting he wanted $2.7 mill. It's not a mere $600K, but he should have compromised and negotiated more. Instead, he went to U of Florida and hurt his shoulder his sophomore year. Following his junior year, he was drafted in the 37th round by the Nationals, but didn't sign. Finally, this year, he was drafted in the 11th round by the Red Sox. He signed - for $100k. His first two starts have been anything but good. It sucks that the Astros have Aiken in a stranglehold like this, but there are very serious risks that need to be accounted for if he does choose to go to a 4 year NCAA institution. If he is set on not signing for that amount, I'd suggest JuCo or Indy ball.

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 09:40 PM) I haven't done a ton of games this year, but I have zero ejections and nary a confrontation, really. That's mainly due to only doing HS Varsity this spring/summer. High school = rarely an ejection (as long as you know what you're doing) Travel ball aka Daddy ball = at least once a week when I was doing it regularly When you call a strike behind the plate, how do you announce a called strike? Do you draw it out, like "STRIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEE" or just a hard "STRAAAHHHHHHHHHHKE" or how?

Regarding this topic, I just want to mention the name Karsten Whitson.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:13 AM) That last sentence reads funny. Seriously though, this board (including myself) had a major crush on Austin Wilson. And, if I looked correctly, there's only 1 mention of Chris Sale in that catch-all at all. The first mention of a player named Sale at all is in regards to Josh Sale, who is not very good. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=77586 Just cuz it's Friday and it's fun to go back into time, DirtySox is the first person I see to make a mention at all: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...t&p=2168667 EDIT: http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...7853&st=150 You just can't beat immediate reactions.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) Deck seems a lot like Axelrod at this point. Seems like we'd have claimed him if we didn't just get Wang. That last sentence reads funny. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) Lol, I know. It says he's awful. Sorry, I should have been clear that I was posting this link to corroborate Feeky's claim that I was wrong. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh now I understand.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) That's right. Damaso Marte has a World Series win, but Mark doesn't. Baseball isn't fair. Buehrle's game against the Angels - the first of the four complete games - was perhaps the best of any pitching performance that postseason. 9 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 4 K's, and 99 pitches thrown. One stupid Robb Quinlan homer kept him from qualifying for a Maddux. And does anybody doubt that he would have come out to pitch the 10th if we hadn't scored that infamous run to walk off? I remember watching that game, knowing his pitch count, knowing how well he was pitching, and having no doubt in my mind that he was coming out for the 10th. I would have been upset had he been removed from that game.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) I wonder if Deck McGuire will be the next claim now that the Jays have DFA'ed him. Not the raw talent of Fernandez, but was a top 15 pick a few years ago out of college, so there is some level of talent there. McGuire was a guy that people thought had a lot of steam building towards the Sox in the 2010 draft. Instead, they got some sidearm slinging lefty.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 07:23 PM) As if on cue: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/matt-kemps-...affs-nightmare/ This doesn't really seem like a good defense of Kemp being a good fielder. It basically says that he doesn't read the ball well and has a slow first step. Any defensive value he's really accrued in his career has come from his athleticism and a good arm. The arm might not fade, but the athleticism surely will. He's basically the anti-Jim Edmonds. Either way, there's way, way too much risk involved with Matt Kemp to even be thinking about this. The only way I'd consider it is some sort of 1 for 1 swap with John Danks with the Dodgers picking up money in years 4 and 5 of the deal, and even then I'd be hesitant.

QUOTE (Timmy U @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 05:59 AM) Another part of Buerhle's Sox legacy is his continuing affect on his teammates. I was at a game before the break started by Danks, so when a kid from the Sox RBI program threw out the first pitch, guess who caught it? Chris Sale. You could tell the kid was absolutely thrilled to meet him instead of the 25th man who catches those things for other teams. Do you think Clayton Kershaw or Justin Verlander is catching ceremonial first pitches? It is cuz Sale played with Buerhle, who taught him a ton about how to be a major league pitcher on and off the field. I think they probably asked Sale if he would go catch the pitch because he's a stud and he said yes because it takes 5 minutes. It would take a total jerk to not go out and catch the first pitch. I doubt that had anything to do with Buehrle. It's a nice anecdote anyways.

QUOTE (glangon @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 04:24 AM) Buerhle will always be a legend to me. The guy is living history. He has a perfect game and a no-hitter. a 5 time all star, 4 time Gold Glove winner. He's won and saved a World Series game in the same series and he pitches at a fast pace, the fastest in MLB atm by a good 2 seconds a pitch. He has pitched at least 200 innings with at least 10 wins for the last 10 years and he has the best slide I've seen on a rain soaked Tarpaulin. All this and his fast ball is slower than some player's change-ups. He may not get into the Hall of Fame but damn, he's given me some fantastic memories. People always think of Buehrle winning a World Series game due to the Konerko granny giving him a 6-4 lead and leaving the game to the best bullpen in Sox history. The problem is that Jenks gave up the lead and Cotts had to come in to bail him out. Buehrle never won a game in the World Series. He did save game 3 though, you are correct on that.

QUOTE (Tex @ Jul 18, 2014 -> 03:06 AM) I know that Mark in the HoF is the longest of long shots but if I was taking someone who knew nothing about baseball into the hall of fame and told them why it's such a great game would you rather show them Clemens or Buehrle? Would you rather tell the story of Mark's career or Bonds? If we started valuing character and contribution to the game as much as gaudy stats, we'd start to get at the heart of why baseball is such a great sport. I'd rather show them Ripken or Gwynn. What you're asking is a bit of a loaded question. Not to diss on Buehrle - I'm not doing that at all - but suggesting that you are supposed to explain the game with either a soft tossing left who stuck around for as long as he did because he was good but rarely great (over long periods of time) versus guys who put up enormous numbers because they cheated is not fair to either side and is going to cause the person to whom you're explaining to probably switch to soccer. Ideally, you'd show them everything, because you're not going to stay at one exhibit for the 5-8 hours you'll be at the Hall of Fame anyways

Daddy likes. When Steverson came on, it seemed as though he was going to be taking on a more comprehensive role than just the majors. It may be showing as the season goes on and could also be a reason why so many hitters started out slowly.
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) So this entire time the difference between Buehrle and your average #4/5 soft tossing lefty has been defense. Wow. There's some guile in there, and a FIP of 4.12 for his career indicates that he's always been a good pitcher, but if he were a bad defensive player and he allowed baserunners to steal on him like crazy, his career could be very similar to that of someone like Joe Saunders instead.

QUOTE (venom4789 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:29 PM) I personally hate keith law. I hope no one is wasting their money on insider. I respect Keith Law's opinion far more than I do someone like Jon Heyman. The guy puts his honest opinion of how he feels a guy will project to the majors and doesn't just blow smoke up everyone's asses.

White Sox sign Willie Bloomquist and they insert him at 2B and the leadoff position immediately. Willie Bloomquist puts up .478/.576/.878/1.454 line, wins the league MVP despite not being a qualified hitter for most major statistical categories, and the White Sox stun the Tigers, winning 55 of their remaining 66 games, and they end the year with a final record of 100-62.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:23 PM) Axelrod has a massive scrotum and balls so big they barely fit in there. Dylan overachieved for a long time here, more than most players ever do. If he had half the talent of some or these other guys he'd have made some good money by now. Good luck to Dylan & hopefully he gets a shot. He does IMO definitely have a chance at a LR role somewhere. If Carlos Torres can do it, and Scott Carroll can do it, etc. then so can he. Carlos Torres averages 91 MPH with his fastball. Scott Carroll is at 89.6 Dylan Axelrod is at 88.3 Maybe, but I have strong doubts.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 03:11 PM) Right now, sure, but as mentioned, Sale is getting tangibly better. Perhaps Kershaw is too. Yes, they're both incredible. Delivery issues are irrelevant unless they lead to injury and I'd argue that Sale has even more deception regarding picking up the ball, but I'll give you the runner-holding advantage. Sale's longish delivery will likely always make him mediocre in that area. I actually saw a breakdown of Kershaw's mechanics at one point - not sure if it was MLB Network or on a site somewhere - but with the way he comes to the plate, you really don't pick up the ball until very, very late, probably as late as you do with Sale, if not later. It's hard to see it watching him from behind, but if you watch him head on, it's incredibly difficult to see it.
