  1. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 03:00 PM) On another forum I'm on if you post a link from the NY Daily News you get banned since it's a tabloid so I guess I'm conditioned to it. But I'll believe it from anywhere else. I was mostly just messing around, and you obviously have to hear it from the horse's mouth before anything is official. It was just a funny initial reaction.
  2. WRAL, the station for whom Gravley works, is based out of Raleigh, NC. North Carolina State is also based out of Raleigh, NC. There is most definitely some smoke here.
  3. 1. Denial 2. Anger 3. Bargaining 4. Depression 5. Acceptance
  4. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) Ah, he hasn't been up with the big club enough? I thought it wasn't the full year anymore. I believe it is 1 full years worth of service time before he is eligible to be sent to the minors.
  5. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 02:26 PM) Sign him for prorated min, let him catch against most RHP, and then let Nieto get 200PA or so in Charlotte. That would be excellent all around. Nieto can't go to Charlotte until next year unless the Sox acquire him outright from the Nationals.
  6. Bron's gonna screw with everyone and head out west to Phoenix.
  7. QUOTE (dayan024 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 01:56 PM) Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB 3m To clarify, yes. Rodon will sign w/@WhiteSox before the deadline. @PSLToFlushing: @MLBDraft safe to say by 7/18? Jim Callis says it's 100%. Not even I'm that ballsy.
  8. Schwarber was an advanced college hitter who is beating the snot out of 2nd year high schoolers and journeyman pitchers. He should be expected to hit A-ball pitching. For comparison's sake, Mike Zunino hit .373/474/.736/1.210 in A ball and he's been a very mediocre hitter in the majors thus far.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 01:59 PM) I love AJ, but I kind of agree with you. If they did, it wouldn't bother me, but I don't think they should. If the Sox were in contention, it's a no brainer, but unless he is bringing a few pitchers with him, it would be nothing but a publicity stunt IMO, and AJ is not exactly playing well. Father time is catching up This sums up my feelings on the subject very well.
  10. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:50 PM) Milone would be a trainwreck in USCF. Too many HR's and too many walks. His career BB/9 is 2.02, career HR/9 is 1.12, and career FB% is 41.3%. Can you tell me why you expect too many home runs and too many walks when he's been fairly proficient at reigning them in throughout his entire career thus far?
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) SAS just said he heard from Melo's people that the decision will be tomorrow AM by the latest. HE'S MOST LIKELY GOING TO SIGN WITH THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS, BUT HE COULD RESIGN WITH THE KNICKS. ALSO, THE BULLS AND ROCKETS REMAIN ON HIS RADAR WHILE SOME LESSER TEAMS LIKE THE HEAT AND CAVALIERS REMAIN AS POSSIBILITIES
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:21 PM) Which is weird. In the minors, Flowers walked a ton. His walk rate is about half what it was. Maybe they just figured out they really didn't have to be too careful with him. I think it's the talent gap. Flowers seems like a classic AAAA player where he can feast on 85-88 MPH fastballs but 90-95 totally throws him off. When MLB pitchers figured out that he isn't good at hitting, they started coming at him more and he can't adjust because he doesn't have the talent to do so.
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 11:18 AM) Reed has been a closer since his SD State days...are you talking about in high school or his first couple of seasons under Tony Gwynn? Except his junior year, when he replaced Strasburg in the rotation. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...?P=Addison-Reed
  14. It gets used way too often for lefties with less than stellar stuff and good command, but Milone really has looked and worked a lot like Buehrle on the mound the few times I've seen him pitch. Not as good as Buehrle, but that's still a cheapish mid to back end of the rotation starter.
  15. QUOTE (striker @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 11:42 AM) I could be misinterpreting this data, but this is the justification Ackley LF 14.4 UZR/150, Projection: 1.5WAR, 10% BB rate. His offensive WAR projections are close to De Aza and Viciedo. Franklin 2B 53 UZR/150, Projection: 3WAR, 12% BB rate De Aza LF .4 UZR/150, Projection: 2-2.5 WAR 8% BB rate Viciedo RF -13.3 UZR/150, Projection: .5 WAR 6% BB rate Beckham 2B -10.6 UZR/150, Projection: 1 WAR 8% BB rate It's pretty hard to project WAR like that, and beyond that, you want to see what these players are at their ceilings, not what they're at now. That 0.5 WAR is probably Viciedo's floor, while you can expect 1-2 WAR out of him, but out of all of these players, I think he probably has the highest ceiling.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:59 AM) And yet a lot of people wanted to acquire sign Kendrys Morales for $14.5 million For 1 or 2 years, without giving up a 1st round pick. For 1 or 2 years, without giving up a 1st round pick. Colby Rasmus is going to be 28 next year, he plays CF, he will enter his prime next year, and he's an incredibly athletic player. He isn't similar to Allen Craig at all. He's also being considered because he'd be signed. Those 3 would all be free to sign, while Craig costs players. He's also signed for 3 years while the others would be 1-2 (or Rasmus would be a long-term signing as a young player). Of course not, but that doesn't mean that you trade young players for old players who are signed for 3 years at $26 million who don't fill a position of need and who are playing poorly.
  17. QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 10:49 PM) We are not getting anything for Dunn. The best case scenario is that he will be placed on waivers right before the August 31st deadline and a competitive team claims him. This is ridiculous. Just because you don't like Dunn doesn't mean teams don't value him properly. Honestly, I bet some team gives up an arm for him. Nothing more than a C prospect, but they'll get someone out of him, assuming they trade him and don't keep him because they feel they're competitive.
  18. I'd be really good with LeBron going back to Cleveland. It would sort of be like an awesome and original music artist selling out for a short period of time to make money and then finding their roots again that got them to where they were in the first place.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) Except what has happened when the White Sox have picked in this range...? Other than Chris Sale? Let's just say 10-19. "Look at what happens with their first round picks that don't turn into studs! THEY AREN'T STUDS!"
  20. He's 30 years old (in 9 days), he's not a strong defensive player, he has a history of injuries, he's not an athletic person (hinting towards quicker decline), he's owed $26 million guaranteed over the next 3 years, and he's not playing well this year. In what world would that ever be a good addition to the Sox? You need to take chances on veterans now and then, but you don't have to commit $26 million to them over 3 years. Give them 1 or 2 year deals.
  21. For the record, here are notable players picked in that 14-18 range that Caulfield dreads so much: 14: Jose Fernandez, Jason Heyward, Billy Butler, Jeff Weaver, Jason Varitek, Derrek Lee, Cliff Floyd, Tino Martinez, and, of course, Ron Karkovice 15: Stephen Drew, Scott Kazmir, Chase Utley, Chris Carpenter, and Jim Rice 16: Nick Swisher, Lance Berkman, Lance Parrish, Roberto Hernandez, Shawn Green 17: Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels, Gary Matthews Sr, Charles Nagy, AJ Pollock 18: Willie Wilson, Glenn Wilson. RA Dickey too, but he was a genuinely talented pitcher but was forced to change due to injury. #18 has the worst history, but the best player in the majors right now went 25th overall, so it's not like there isn't talent there.
  22. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 10:38 PM) You mean the road to the 14th-18th draft pick in the 1st round....? I'd rather they were 10 games under .500, improved the team with the best trades for prospects at the deadline and all the key players for next season were completely healthy/successful in Abreu, Sale, Quintana, Eaton and Avisail. As a fan, a video game player, or a team extremely committed to a very long term rebuild - 4-6 years - this is a good philosophy to have. I'm really glad the Sox don't have this mentality.
  23. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 07:40 AM) Kurt Suzuki would be a good fill-in for 2015 while Nieto gets AAA at-bats next season. I don't see any way the Twins don't re-sign him with the year he's had. But, not that there's any logic to it, he just seems like the exact type of player that the Sox would acquire only to see him put up a .220/.270/.330 line.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) Yeah, we assume people think it's her first name, usually. I would assume that it's a Donny Lucy shirsey.
