QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) Worrying about it is valid I think. FWIW though Taj(6'9" 225) and Noah(6'11") aren't exactly huge either and they've done well. Like Bmags has pointed out, reports on his D are actually quite positive. If they can get him to add a bit more muscle he should be fine. That's the big thing. I think you'll see him do more in years 2 and 3 than year 1 defensively.

As Jose Abreu drives around Chicago, he finds cross country athletes and asks them to get in the car. He just can't get enough of driving runners home.
-
When Jose Abreu was 3, he set foot onto his first soccer field. He homered and doubled in the first minute of action.

QUOTE (ChiSoxJon @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 07:27 AM) Lindstrom was very mediocre anyway, and Jones had no closer experience, still prefer him as a set-up man for what should be Reed...or reincarnated Jenks...Reed probably could have gave us a dozen more wins this first half alone And he'd have cost the Sox those 6 wins in other games giving up more walk offs to Giambi. I liked Addison Reed, but he's not that good of a pitcher. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 07:48 AM) Hey, I found someone who agrees witn me, but watch out for the onslaught from Mr. Wite. Naturally, I found it. Have you checked out Reed's numbers lately? They're virtually Belisarian, except that I feel Belisario actually has a chance to save his season. I do not feel the same of Reed.

QUOTE (LDF @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 05:05 PM) by any chance any update on his range there? thanks for any updates. I haven't seen a single game, but I feel I can safely say it's been great still.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:56 PM) His BABIP has certainly been lucky, but his swing has really changed around, and if you want to regress one way, you have to do it another way: His hr/fb is 5.3%, coming into this year, it was almost double that. It could easily be that Conor has changed his approach, see this article (also has good quotes from Hahn about team building): This sounds like a certain catcher on the White Sox too. Gillaspie is obviously a much better hitter, but this statement alone throws up red flags like crazy. He's not Peavy, who had to go, or Alexei, who I'd like to see go, but he is a guy that you definitely listen to offers for. If someone is willing to overpay for him, I don't see why you don't make a move.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) Color me jealous. One of the best shows I have ever seen was seeing him in Chicago in 2002. I'm a little too busy this summer to see him play in the Cities, but if he ever gets close again, I'm definitely going to see him. Kind of hard to imagine that though with him being 72. Just an absolutely phenomenal show, the best concert I've ever attended.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:28 PM) No, it's just based on your own team's games, but the Sox have played 96 so Sale is one inning short. I'm an idiot and a smellface

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) Felix named starter tomorrow. It says he has the lowest ERA in the AL. I checked, and Sale has a lower ERA. To qualify, he must have 1 IP for every Sox game. He has 95 IP in 94 games. Someone explain this to me? The Dodgers have played 97 games. I believe that's the most in the league. Thus, to technically be qualified for the ERA title right now, a pitcher must have throw 97 innings.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:10 PM) If they feel betrayed by someone the team they root for traded away, that's really strange. AJ loves to play the heel. Someone described him as sandpaper in the clubhouse. Sometimes you need that. When you win, just like everything else, it is perfect. If you don't win, it's a huge part of the problem. I just think if AJ was the problem he was perceived to be when the Giants non tendered him, and the problem he supposedly was in Boston, he wouldn't have lasted 8 years and 3 or 4 contracts in Chicago. No, I agree completely with you. So much of it depends on the mentality of the clubhouse as well, where he was accepted with open arms in Chicago (and presumably Texas too, even if they didn't bring him back), but not Boston or San Francisco. Twins fans would always talk about how they hated Pierzynski and I always asked why. The answer was always "because he's an an A-hole and he signed with Chicago." I'd mention the Nathan, Liriano, and Bonser thing and that they should be grateful, and that would be irrelevant.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 12:00 PM) What was the negativity in Minnesota? I thought he was traded because Mauer was ready. I don't think there was negativity as he was traded but he already wasn't well perceived by the league even then. Twins fans felt that, because he signed with Chicago and helped bring home a World Series, that he'd betrayed them in some way and they've held contempt for him since that day.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) Well I'm not going to be. I'll be disappointed unless the return is something along those lines and a fair amount better than the return for Peavy. Then I think you'll be disappointed. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:31 AM) Alexei is hitting .282, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 8 HRs, 41 RBIs, 15 SBs, slugging 400 and an OPS of 718. Of course he was going to hit some sort of slump because he was not going to maintain the 330-350 average that he was hitting before. Those are still great numbers for a SS who is on a great contract and has a solid career. You can definitely net a great deal. He has the 11th best wRC+ and WAR. He's a good shortstop. He will help a team down the stretch but I do not believe he is the type of player that a team view as a make or break piece. If the packages they are getting are similar to the ones the Sox were reportedly getting for Jermaine Dye in 2007 (Wily Mo Pena and Manny Delcarmen, two talented but struggling players), then I 100% agree you hang onto him. I think you can get a good package of young players for him and I think he'll be dealt.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:51 AM) Was it AJ or Ozzie leaving that guys like Konerko kind of gave the "Change in the clubhouse is good, wink, wink"? It was Ozzie.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) But you're missing a huge portion of the equation there...how badly team needs to move payroll, what team has coming up behind it, what state team is for duration of player's contract. The White Sox clearly needed to move Jake Peavy's $15 million, they had no use for him this year, they thought they had a guy who could replace him until EJ completely blew up, and there was at the time virtually no chance of fielding a competitive team before his contract ends. None of those are true with Ramirez. The Sox can afford his contract, he's still useful to them, there's no clear-cut "ready to replace him right now" candidate, and it's entirely possible that they'll be fielding a competitive team before his contract ends. Thus the White Sox should also be in a position to hold out for a higher price or decide not to move him at all. If they don't move him I will not be mad. If they didn't move Peavy I'd have been very mad. The quality of the player matters though too. Ramirez is not the defensive player he was 2-3 years ago and his offense hasn't gotten any better (or worse, for that matter). He may be the best SS on the market, but that doesn't immediately make him worth a top 25-50 prospect or two top 100 prospects. Peavy was coming off a very good season and he hadn't pitched poorly leading up to his trade last year either. Again, I'm not saying they have to deal Ramirez, but I think you have to be more willing to deal him than you are suggesting.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) why is this an important topic? lol If he opted out of a contract and signed one with the White Sox, they likely intimated that they will very likely promote him to the majors at some point in time.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) That's fine, if we don't get a top 10 in MLB prospect that's ok, but if we can't get somewhere in the range of top 25-ish or couple top-100 then I don't have any good reason to listen. I think Rick Hahn does though. I think we're overvaluing Alexei a bit on here. I'm not saying they don't have the right to ask for a lot, but even if not all of the guys pan out, the Sox got a great return for Peavy last year and I'd gladly take a similar package again.
-
I think a Samardzija like return is asking for too much unless the Sox package another player with him. The Cubs traded Shark and Hammel to get Russell (plus those other pieces, which are nothing to be scoffed at). Also, Alexei Ramriez is 32 years old. He turns 33 by the end of the season. Samardzija is 29 and doesn't turn 30 till the offseason. Maybe if the Sox included someone like Gillaspie they could get that return, but that's about it. I also have no problem with a Peavy-esque return for Ramirez whatsoever.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 11, 2014 -> 06:25 AM) Why is it OK to have 4 or 5 RHP in a rotation, but not LHP? Just get 5 good pitchers. Who cares what hand they throw with? Seriously. If you had 5 Chris Sale's, you wouldn't put one of them in the bullpen to make sure Scott Carroll could get into the rotation to break up all the lefties.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) My sources say Phil Jackson and Jeanie shared lunch today. Phil had sea urchin spaghetti, Jeanie had cold smoked salmon. Meanwhile, Carmelo and Lala also dined out. They went to McDonalds with their young son Kiyan. Carmelo had 2 BBQ Ranch Burgers, a large order of fries and a strawberry shake. Lala had a side salad and a Sprite. Little Kiyan had a McNugget Happy Meal. It is unknown what his toy surprise was but rumor has it that he wasn't happy with it. In Vegas, Lebron had lunch today by himself at the Carnival World Buffet. He indulged in pizza, several helpings of barbecue ribs and topped it off with a plate full of seafood enchiladas. I won't believe anything until the players say it themselves.

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 10, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) Wisening??? The present participle of the verb wisen.

This would also assume that Melo and LeBron haven't been in contact at all.
