  1. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 02:13 PM) Donny Lucy was one of the more fun longshots to root for. I still remember how angry much of SoxTalk was that we didn't draft that other guy, A's player now with the Nats? Why can't I think of his name? Anyway the board wanted him instead, he was there, said Lucy is never going to hit. They were right. But Lucy was a good guy for the pitchers I think. I'm pretty sure I read where the pitchers really liked his game calling and stuff. You mean the Twins. He's a f***ing pain in the Sox ass too.
  2. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) Mario Kart 8. So fun. So my son with this game (he is 7). First of all he is just ruthless. I used to let him win sometimes when he was 3 or 4 but now he talks so much hot s*** during the game that when I have the chance to, I destroy him. He shows me no mercy so I respond in kind. This past weekend he asks me: Him: So dad do you like winning? Me: Sure. Him: Do you like losing? Me: No. Him: Not even a little bit? Me: Not really. Him: Well you better get used to losing, because you're about to get OWNED! Then the next day we're playing one of the N64 retro tracks. He says "did you like this track when you played it in olden times?" Your son trash talks? No way, I'd never believe it.
  3. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) Kevin Milligan (whoever that is): Richards is the easy choice. 10 wins, an ERA under 3.00, and over 110 Ks. Come on people! Milligan, more like mulligan, as in he needs a mulligan of a tweet, amirite?
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 11:22 AM) I've been having to install & remove our car seat several teams recently, and I barely spend 5 minutes in the car and I am sweating bullets. Just the thought of sitting in the car that long makes me want to break a car seat over this guy's f***ing head. And you're not even dealing with the Georgia heat.
  5. Reading about this almost makes me physically ill.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 11:02 AM) No, it's not my formula, what I'm saying is that you're not going to get those 3-4 young prospects back for Quintana. You're going to get an offer of the Peavy deal, essentially, but not with Stroman/Norris as the headliner. As soon as those two names are off the table, then the deal dies quickly (in the hypothetical Jays example). Maybe AA is getting desperately/antsy to get back in the pennant race and sees this season getting away from him with the Angels and Mariners making charges...we don't know. We do know there's a lot of pressure on him to reach the playoffs, finally, but it's going to be through smaller moves (like Liriano/Myers/Youkilis) and not a blockbuster in-season involving his top two prospects. Then you don't trade him. This has been said before.
  7. What does it matter if Flowers or Phegley or Smith or Nieto is or is not the answer? John Buck clearly is not the answer.
  8. I'm with you all the way on this one TUC. You need a monstrosity of a package, but if a team says "we are willing to give these 6 guys for Quintana and Petricka but we are not willing to give you these 6 guys for Quintana alone," nobody is going to say "NO DEAL BUDDY."
  9. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) So Shark is better but they are equally good? Got it I have not said this. Frankly, my opinion was favorable towards Quintana, not Samardzija, but some people are failing to realize this because I didn't say that "Quintana is better than Samardzija," but instead said it is "crazy to say that Quintana is better than Samardzija." Production wise, they have been, for all intents and purposes, equally good. I personally believe Samardzija has better stuff. Quintana is the more valuable commodity at this point.
  10. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:33 AM) Where there is smoke there is a fire and also a white man dumb enough to advertise to his enemy where he will be sleeping. There has been smoke since the 2012-13 offseason, so a year and a half now. Hmm, I wonder who started it? Obama
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) I honestly believe, playing 4-5 days per week...that he would put up better numbers and provide more leadership than Flowers does. But maybe that's just me. Yes, it's a SAD state of affairs in terms of catching all around baseball. With Wieters down, Zunino in Seattle and Sal Perez are the only impressive guys out there in the AL. But I don't think an upgrade's out there that won't cost you SOMETHING decent you don't want to give up in return. I assure you, it's most definitely just you.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) Are league adjustments really helping the AL this year? As long as the AL operates with a DH and the NL with a pitcher, it always will.
  13. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:29 AM) And what exactly makes you feel Samardzija is a better pitcher? QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) I will let you try and argue that case [of Quintana being better]. I am going to maintain that they are, for all intents and purposes, equally good with neither pitcher being better or worse.
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:21 AM) Well, there's only ONE way to justify it. If you thought the White Sox had ANY chance of competing for a Wild Card spot this season and didn't want to give up any talent to try something different, and just because you're JR and tired of seeing Flowers hit .100 and strike out at a historic, Dunn-ish rate. I'm sure Piazza is an upgrade behind the plate at this point, but I'm not about to bring him in. Also, if I felt the Sox were in contention for a Wild Card birth, and I was looking to upgrade at catcher (which affects the chemistry with pitchers), I'm going to shoot a little higher than John Buck. Buck wRC+ - 65 Flowers wRC+ - 62 There is no way you can logically or reasonably justify bringing in John Buck.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:20 AM) So Samardzija has allowed less earned runs in more innings pitched, more ks, the same amount of walks and less hits, and obviously lower WHIP, and he is worth .6 less fWar this year? The strikeout and walk rates are remarkably similar, but Quintana's LOB% is much lower than normal (career 74.2%, 69.7% right now), implying that if this were normalized, his ERA would be even lower. Plus park and league adjustments too.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:12 AM) fWAR the last 3 years including so far in 2014 Smarj 3.0 2.8 2.4 Q 1.6 3.7 3.0 I don't think it's crazy talk to say that based on the last 2 seasons Q has been the better pitcher. He's been worth 1.5 extra WAR over the past 1.5 seasons. I will let you try and argue that case. I am going to maintain that they are, for all intents and purposes, equally good with neither pitcher being better or worse.
  17. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:07 AM) I'll accept the argument if you factor in age and control, but not straight up. I think sox fans, annoyed with the Sale comparisons, have weirdly now convinced themselves that Samardzija is garbage Right, age and control isn't better, it's more valuable. Barry Bonds is still probably a better hitter than Adrian Nieto, but if you had both under contract, you're going to get more in return for Nieto.
  18. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 08:37 AM) Also kudos to Dayan, keep bumping up that trade value. Mariners were watching right? They should have been. Watching and dreaming all over him. And slobbering. Again, I don't think the Sox are dealing Viciedo unless they get a crazy offer.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 08:50 AM) Tyler Flowers won't make it to age 34 in the big leagues. Well...we had our chances to go after guys like Suzuki and Ruiz in FA and we passed. And yet there's still not solution in sight. It's clearly not Josh Phegley (and take all those offensive numbers in Charlotte with a huge grain of salt), and reports are that Kevan Smith is raw defensively (still) as well. So time to get creative, Rick Hahn. There's no reason for trying to justify signing John Buck. They aren't going to do it.
  20. QUOTE (striker @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 09:04 AM) I disagree. I think you could get Sanchez and one of Stroman/Norris for Quintana. Quintana is better than Samardzjia, is 25 vs. 29 and is controlled through 2018. Sox might have to throw in a low level pitching prospect to go back but I think the Jays make that move. If I'm Hahn I wouldn't do it. You know what you are going to get from Quintana and Stroman and Norris are still question marks. The White Sox don't need more un-projectionable players when they have a great duo in Abreu and Sale to build around. I do not believe Quintana is better than Samardzija. He is more valuable and more of a guarantee going forward, but I do not believe he is better. Frankly, he may not be worse either, but I think it's crazy talk to say that Quintana is better than Samardzija.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 8, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) They're not going to give you Stroman and Daniel Norris. In all likelihood, you're not even going to get one of those guys. You might get Sanchez, but how does that help the White Sox, exactly? The Blue Jays weren't willing to give up EITHER Stroman or Norris straight up for Samardzijia, let alone both of them. Then you don't trade him. Pretty simple solution.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 07:54 PM) The Astros have him by the balls. He is 17 or 18. $5 million sets him up pretty well if baseball doesn't work out. He is hurt. If he needs surgery, the draft next year is probably out. As long as the injury is legit, I think they are being more than fair. You're right, Aiken has no leverage at all. He either signs for $5 mill, or he goes JuCo, in which case he's not getting drafted that highly again for at least 2 years, or he goes D1 and then he can't get drafted for 3 years. He HAS to sign. It's a goodwill offering by the Astros that they're giving that much. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 10:04 PM) Boras is not going to let his client be another Matt Harrington, but I realize there is precedent with Appel, but that only makes our case stronger with how terrible Appel has been this year. One week until Rodon signs, can't wait. Appel did have a little less leverage than Rodon. So long as Boras has not had direct negotiations with the Sox, he can go back, but you can point to what Appel got as a senior draft pick #1 overall. It's still 99.9999%.
  23. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) I think a lot of agents are going to be wary of dealing with the Astros...this seems to fit with how they go about doing business. In the long run, they might win with this tactic on the financial side, but it tends to leave a bad taste. Whether it's this situation, the release of the proprietary database trade information, Bud Norris' comments, lots of former and current players (anonymously), the low-balling contract strategy with Springer/Singleton/Dominguez/Grossman being offered long-term extensions before they've even played at the major league level...let's just say their path and the Cubs' will always be intriguing ones to follow, that's for sure. If they succeed, they'll change baseball even more to the quant/SABR side. If not, another setback or black eye. The Astros took a guy that many felt was the best arm with the highest ceiling in the draft, found out that he may have some injury concerns after initially agreeing to a $6.5 million deal, and are still saying to him "look, we're still willing to give you $5 mill, which we believe is more than fair." I don't see anything questionable with what the Astros have done.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 7, 2014 -> 03:47 PM) the noise that the ball made when it hit his knee was bad. and loud. loud and bad. Kind of like yo momma in bed
