I think this is seeing how Carroll does for one or two more starts while also seeing how Surkamp looks against MLB hitters, and if Carroll fails with Surkamp succeeding, I could see another depth chart move made and then someone like Veal brought up.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 11:07 AM) Still gotta keep him down long enough to ensure the phantom seventh year of control, but yeah, holding out for the Super 2 deadline is asking to shoot yourself in the foot if you have a guy that is going to make your team better. I agree with this, but I basically assumed this being a formality.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) I really don't think Hahn or anyone with the White Sox really care what Soxtalk thinks about Ventura's managing. Besides, many of the managers here had Daniel Webb as the closer. Evidence suggests that, for now, looks pretty dumb, and they would have been calling for their own heads. There are 2 guys in the bullpen that have been totally reliable. Putnam and Petricka. Petricka has been used a lot, even Hawk is saying they need to tone down his usage. If those are your only reliable guys, inserting any reliever is bound to blow up in your face fairly often. And the Monday Morning QB's will always be ready to say just how dumb Robin is, just after disaster strikes. It still boggles my mind how many people think Cooper plays zero role in pitcher usage. He clearly does, and should be critiqued as well. I agree that Cooper is overrated and goes without criticism far too often, but I really don't want anyone else acting as pitching coach.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 10:36 AM) The Padres might disagree. The Padres had a new ownership group and felt that they wanted someone else to build their team rather than Josh Byrnes. That has literally NOTHING to do with the White Sox situation because it's the PADRES' situation.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 10:14 AM) It does but he'll only accrue like 30 days of service which isn't a big deal. Just wait 30 days past the Super 2 deadline to call him up when he's ready to join the rotation and you're all good. Or you can just call him up to begin the year anyways and pay the Super 2 salary. If ihe's the best player and you think it could make a difference at the end of the year, there's no reason to keep him in the minors for half the year to ultimately save around $4 mill total. If the guy's good, he's gonna get paid eventually anyways.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 10:22 AM) Let's say you have a fiance and you're unsure about her....wavering back and forth. You have two hypothetical choices. You either marry her today or you never see her again for the rest of your life. If you can't imagine your future without her, then the choice is clear. I think nearly everyone wants to see what this White Sox team looks like in 3 years with Hahn given a free reign to make decisions as he sees fit. On the other hand, I don't think more than a few would be overly upset if Robin Ventura wasn't around to manage that 2017 team. Granted, we've seen 1 more season of Ventura as manager than Hahn as GM, but we should be very familiar with him from all the time he was the most highly-paid Assistant GM in all of baseball. This isn't about husband and wife though. This is like having a car (Ventura) and a house (Hahn) and you can decide whether or not you want to keep them or get different ones. I mean, seriously, Hahn and Ventura have almost nothing to do with each other's job security.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 09:53 AM) Would ANYONE fire Hahn and keep Ventura instead (in one of those hypothetical situations where you have no choice but to lose one or the other)? I bet those in favor of that would be comprised of....well, who exactly would take that position?
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 09:45 AM) Not sure there's many a mangers in baseball that would have made the teams he's had any better. Would a better manager really make this bullpen better? If we're firing Robin, we're firing Coop as well....I can't imagine Coop, being the loudmouth New Yorker he is, not having a big say in how the bullpen is run. If he thinks it's a bad move I just can't see him sitting back and not saying it's dumb. I think a better manager manages a bullpen better, but you can only do so much with the talent on hand, and this wouldn't be a good bullpen at this point even with someone else on hand.

QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) Ok so what players on the Charlotte roster have passports that allow them to "work" in Canadia? Does soxtalk have an insider with the department of labor or The department of consular affairs? I'm guessing they all do. Part of the process of signing contracts with the team(s) are setting up passports for all these guys, and then renewing them when necessary.

Where is the option for 8 year extension worth $23 million per year?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 08:16 AM) If the DFA Downs, it immediately clears a 40 man roster spot right? Yes. It was a worthwhile signing, but sometimes these things happen.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 04:20 PM) s***ty nickname lineup: Weasel Bacon Flanders El Canon Big Stupid The Cuban Stick The Cuban Turd El Coco Weeds El Coco is going to have a great game IMO, 1 double, 1 2- base error, a clutch hit in the 8th leading off & caught stealing/picked off immediately. With Rudy* on the mound * this is a double meaning nickname. First, because Noesi is kind of an underdog (maybe sort of?) but also because Noesi kind of looks like Nosei which would be pronounced nosy which is another word for rude which, when turned into a nickname sort of thing, is actually Rudy. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 02:01 PM) A no-hit infielder is exactly what Sox don't need. Sox are loaded with MI prospect sox need pitching c, and OF. and players who can actually hit. Mariners may have some good A or AA pitching they'd deal. But we don't need their AAA/ML players/prospects like Franklin or Ackley. Franklin has struggled at the MLB level, but he hit pretty well in the minors. I'd have no problem with him as part of a package.

Who do you most want to keep after the Core 4?
witesoxfan replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Jose Valentin was also a better fielding shortstop too. -
QUOTE (LDF @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 10:42 AM) while I like your enthusiasm about using Ravelo, but I was once told by many posters many yrs ago, you use 1b / dh for power hitters. why, I don't know how that came to be. If he keeps on hitting, they'll find a spot for him. Also, he's saying he can develop into a power bat. Plenty of guys hit 20 homers a year at 1B, it's not a problem, especially in today's game.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 10:46 AM) This question is why we have linear weights! Just compare those guy's wOBA or wRC+ to see who contributes more. Yes. Those numbers you presented, LDF, leave out a ton of details too. How many times are they walking? How many bases are they stealing? What position are they playing? Do they play good defense? How are their enchiladas? Important stuff like that. -

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 25, 2014 -> 08:45 AM) The wrath of Wite is now coming your way. Why? Boggs has proven he's terrible. He was worth a shot, but if a 2.23 WHIP and a 9.26 ERA after 34 innings in AAA Charlotte doesn't show ineptitude, I don't know what does.
